WHO: Annabel Lee & Edgar Allan Poe
WHEN: Friday night
WHERE: Adrienne Theater, Philadelphia
WHAT: Meeting at a night out to see Opera Macabre
The opera part was all still a little foreign to Annabel, but sitting in the darkened little theatre in Philly and watching a show about Poe was a delight. She recognised each of the plots happening - There was the Pit and the Pendulum, followed by The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar and the Black Cat. The drum rumbled like a heart buried beneath floorboards, and eerie strings and thunder accompanied the doomed House of Usher. And then, right before interval, the black figure of Death himself swept through the crowd of revelers on stage, in a room of black and red.
Then the audience itself was in that black room as the lights when down and people applauded. Out in the lobby Annabel ordered herself a tonic water and tried to find a spot to stand out of the way. Annabel spotted, then, the man she'd talked to online (Arthur, he'd said) and made her way over to him, smiling, "Hi," she said, "wondered if we'd manage to run into each other."
