Hermes stopped eating at that. He turned to smile warmly at her and then leaned forward to kiss her hair. "That's wonderful, Kat," he said, his voice soft. "I'm happy for you." That is what he had been protecting, after all. The life of his grandchild and great-grandchild.
Victor returned with some clothes and the kit. "I'll take a look at you when you're done eating." He hesitated and then said, "thank you, Hermes."
Hermes just shook his head and took another bite of soup. "There was never a question of what I would do when you told me what had happened. Then I just had to wait until they got bored of me." He rather wished they had gotten bored sooner, or that they had at least killed him.
