WHO: Thomas Kemp, Nerd [Serenity], and then Jamie for however long he manages to stick around with the awkwardness
WHAT: Bad decisions
WHEN: Thursday, early morning and then afternoon
WHERE: Kemp apartment
WARNINGS: Sexness
His sister was in hospital, and his girlfriend had broken up with him and Thomas was beginning to think someone had a vendetta against his family or something. His brain still wasn't working quite right and while he was glad his entire family was taking care of Maddy, it meant he was left to his own devices.
He was also incredibly hungry, and somehow cooking seemed too difficult. His hand still had some numbness and he was quite worried he might burn down the apartment if no one was watching him. So he grabbed a yogurt and inhaled it before trying to find someone to call. It bothered him that he needed a Thomas-sitter, but it was probably the best way to ensure nothing terrible happened.
Victor would have come in a second, Thomas knew that well. But the poor man had already been with him yesterday, trying to console him about being dumped. Really there was only one person he actually wanted to see, and while his family wasn't playing watch dog was probably the best opportunity.
Which was why, twenty minutes later, Serenity was at his door.
He let her in and the first thing she did was turn the lights on. "You're sitting in the dark, Tommy."
Thomas bit his lip and he looked up at the ceiling which was now much brighter than it had been a moment ago. "Right. Oops."
She stepped forward and he let her lead him over to the sofa and sit him down. "Jamie said Lena broke up with you? I'm sorry, Tommy."
"Not just broke up with me though," Thomas said, rubbing at his eyes. The loss of Lena still felt like a gaping wound. He missed her so much it hurt. "She just...left. What is it about me that makes you all do that?" he asked honestly. He wasn't trying to be self-involved; he actually wanted to know.
He noted the look of regret on Serenity's face, but then she took his hand in hers, and he felt a little better. "It was never you," she assured him. "Not in my case. I loved you, but I'm not even really a person. And living a human life- It just scared me. I don't know Lena though. I can't tell you why she left."
Thomas groaned and he leaned his head back against the pillows. "And I feel so sorry for Jamie because he's trying so hard to look after me, but I can tell he's hurt too and just trying not to show it. He does that a lot. Don't know where he got it from," Thomas said dryly. "If I had known she would hurt him like this I wouldn't have let it go so far. I just...I always wanted him to have someone he could rely on. Like a mother, I guess. And he gets disappointed again." Thomas turned his head to see Serenity looking quite uncomfortable. "Sorry."
"No- No, it's fair," she nodded. "And I am trying, I'm just bad at it. From what I saw, Lena wasn't until now. I wish I could change things."
"Now Maddy's hurt and terrified and I just want to...I don't know, move my entire family into a fortress or something. Augh, I'm so sick of talking about depressing things. And it's hard, when every day I do something else to remind me my brain isn't right, but let's...let's pretend for a little while everything is fine, okay?"
"Sure," Serenity said, a smile sneaking onto her face.
"Good. Oh!" Thomas rose, unsteadily, and he retrieved his laptop. When he sat back down, he opened it up and clicked around for his photos folder. "I can show you some vacation pictures! Jamie will want to show you his, but I took some too. Look here. We had been walking around Madrid all day and it was so windy."
"Your hair!" Serenity laughed. Thomas' hair was sticking in every direction. "Awww, I miss your hair."
"Me too, but it'll come back," Thomas waved his hands around. "Here we are being dicks on a fountain. And this stray dog kept chasing pigeons away from us so we gave him some bread in thanks. I named him Scruffy. You can probably see why," Thomas laughed. "Oh, Jamie dared me to wear this hat. Then the guy made us buy it because I tried it on and Jamie thought that was hilarious. I have it in my room somewhere and it's the worst hat ever. I think I'm going to give it to him for Christmas. He'll never see it coming."
Thomas continued to rattle on about their vacation pictures, until he realised Serenity had stopped responding. She had gone quiet and he turned to look at her. "I'm sorry- Is everything okay?"
"You just look like you have so much fun together," she said, her tone lamenting.
"We do. Usually more when my skull is whole and my family isn't in hospital but...yeah, we enjoy each other." It made Thomas all warm to even talk about. And just that made him realise he would be okay. He was sad Lena was gone, and yes he would continue to miss her, but he still had the most important person in his life. Things would be fine.
Serenity shrugged. "Sounds nice," she admitted. "I want to get to know him better."
"He'll let you, you know," Thomas assured her, setting the laptop aside. "He wants to know you better too. After this Lena thing he might be...less trusting for awhile, and you might have to fight harder, but that's not his fault. If he does that, he's protecting himself."
"I understand. I suppose having you two in my life again does make me see what I missed out on. And as bad as I would have been at it...I still wonder sometimes." She looked sideways at him, and all of a sudden Thomas realised she was very close. She had, of course, inched closer to look at the photos, but without the laptop between them it felt different.
He cleared his throat.
"I uh- Yeah. I wonder what it would have been like with you here too." It probably would have included less hunger at the very least. "But you're here now."
"I am."
They went silent, staring at each other, their faces inches away. And then, like they had suddenly become magnetised, they leaned together and kissed. The lip lock was a little frantic and sloppy, but neither of them cared. Nineteen years ago they had been in love. Just because they weren't any more didn't mean there still wasn't a whole lot of lust left over.
They stood, awkwardly, and kissed the entire way to Thomas' bedroom where they lost no time in pulling each other's clothes off. Unfortunately the rapid pace at which they did so caused a few rips and tears but neither of them seemed to care.
Then, when they were completely naked, Serenity stopped kissing him and, breathless, finally asked, "should you even be doing this?"
Panting, he stared at her and he didn't even bother to keep the pleading expression from his eyes. "Yes. Yes. I should be doing exactly this," he said firmly.
"But your head!"
"Just don't hit it against anything," he suggested, pulling her in for another kiss. Any further protests she may have had, died against his lips.
The thought of being with her again had never really gone away, not in nineteen years. He dreamed about making love to her often enough. And even though they hadn't been together in so long, he remembered her body. Every curve of it was familiar, having not changed at all. His, however, had changed a lot and Serenity seemed rather pleased with it. There was a certain amount of pride he took in it when he made her groan and scream against his skin.
They stayed like that for hours, making love at least four times, though never quite as frantically as the first time. He was fairly sure this was not considered getting rest and letting himself heal, but fuck if he cared. He felt more relaxed and sated than he had in months. They finally fell asleep beside each other, Serenity wrapped in Thomas' arms.
*************
When Serenity awoke, Thomas was still asleep, having turned over in his sleep. His back was now facing her and she hoped that meant she could slip out of his bed without waking him. She wasn't planning on disappearing, however. She just really wanted some coffee.
She moved carefully, taking care to be silent when she stole one of his shirts to slip over her head. A quick check of the clock let her know it was early afternoon. They had slept longer than she thought.
Inching the door closed behind her, she padded out to the kitchen and that was where she saw her son. "Oh god, Jamie," she said, flushing bright red. "Uhm. Hi."
