"I know you do," Jamie said, because he really did know that. "I'm not sure I would have reacted any better if I found out I was going to be a dad, but it's still a hell of a thing to hear."
Jamie got up and sat down next to his dad, grabbing one of his hands and squeezing it once. "But we survived," he said quietly. "We got along OK without her and her money, and maybe it would have helped, yeah, but getting mad is just gonna make us feel worse. She left. She missed out on our lives, and that's her loss."
"Enough," he said. "Enough to know that you bent over backwards, you did anything you could, to put food on the table and keep the roof over our heads."
