The sound Thomas made, though muffled into his knees, was sort of like an anguished, groaning yelp. He just had to get out a bit of frustration before he talked to his son about things he would rather not discuss.
He finally raised his head and sighed heavily. "California," he admitted. "And somehow my mother knew because she kept watching me and whenever I tried to slip away she followed me. I've beaten myself up about that so many times, kiddo. I'm so glad I didn't go. I promise. I'm sorry you had to hear that."
