Briseis was dreaming.
It seemed as though she'd been dreaming for days on end - and she had - but each time she seemed to reach the point of waking she was dragged back down into darkness. In that place she was forced to face all the horrors of her past, of the many men and gods who'd hurt and used her, of Achilles and Patroclus' death, of David's death. All of them blamed her for it, all of them came crawling as broken corpses to drag her down with them to Hades with a promise of eternal torture. Achilles tore open her stomach with claws and forced her to eat her own insides and all the while she cried for having lost him. He burned alive on a pyre in ancient Greece, writhing and screaming, while strong hands held her and forced her to watch. Patroclus ripped apart his own body to remove the stolen armour from it, screaming for Briseis' help.
David... David's death was vivid, a thing that no history book had ever made up and still so recent for Briseis. David's death got more horrible with each time her mind retold it, seeking out new angles to torment her, seeking bloodier forms of execution.
And when she wasn't watching death, Briseis was running. Constantly running from enemies that always knew where she was hiding, no matter how well she did it.
It was a blurred Greek warrior who grabbed her this time, dragging her out from under the bed she'd used for cover and, along with it, out from sleep.
Briseis blinked heavily and then, as her eyes focused in the gloom, shrieked at the sight over the woman leaning so closely over her.
Briseis was fascinating.
Her dreams were both real and not. They were tainted memories and true horrors and Epiales liked her. Epiales thought that this woman had a small chance of understanding what she herself went through every day. For every nightmare Epiales brought on someone, she brought a dozen onto herself.
When Briseis shrieked at Epiales leaning down so close that their noses were almost touching, Epiales screamed back. She fell to the ground and scrambled away, her hands clamped over her ears. "Immortal mortal is too loud!" Epiales hissed at her.
As the goddess shrank away, so did Briseis. She kept moving backwards until her back slammed hard into a cold wall, her fingers digging in as she tried to find purchase. "Who are you?" she demanded. (She tried to sound demanding, but her head felt like it was full of rocks and clouds and creeping crawling things.) "What do you want?"
