Who: Doc Holliday and Nitrous Oxide What: Doc has himself hung up in jail for the night, he needs a bail-out. Where: New York jail When: Wednesday night, December 7th Warnings: A little foul language via Doc.
There was a whistle that filtered the jail walls as Doc sat rather peacefully in his chair, cuffed to the arms and craving a cigarette. He licked his lips, chewing down on his slightly prickly upper lip. He hadn't even gotten a clean shave this morning.
The weather was changing which gave him that longing for warmer weather. His throat felt sore, causing him to spend more nights at the poker table with a bottle of whiskey than at home in his bed. A round of cards was just the right ticket to making him feel like himself. Old habits died hard, those were habits he couldn't shake, it was the way the world remembered him. A gambling man with a sharp shoot.
He curled his lips into a smile when a brute was brought in by a handful of cops. The same man he'd got into a shouting match with at the card table. He whistled his tune a little, causing the drunk to bark back.
"Shut the fuck up you skinny as shit!"
Doc threw his head back and laughed, still whistling away until one of the cops came over to release him from the chair.
"Detaining you for the night, be cooperative will you?"
Doc stood tall, licking his lips a second time, a slight haze in his eyes. He was a wee bit drunk. His hand stretched up as best they could with the cuffs and patted the cop on the chest. "Can I bother ya for a smoke, partner?" his southern accent laying it on thick. The cop shoved him away. "Come on," he shoved him into the cell, but not before Doc felt that sharp tickle and started to hack.
"It's cold in here," he said with furrowed brows. His answer was a door in his face while he curled up on the bed in the corner feeling that taste of blood scratching against his throat.
He'd been given a chance for one phone call, but Doc was a lonely and drunk old fool. It took him a few moments to realize he wasn't back in the old west and that the girl he needed to call wasn't Kate, but Nicole. She may not get to him til the next morning after he left a message on her answering machine.
Nitrous had been midway through an impromptu shopping spree, and hadn't even heard her phone ringing in her purse. It wasn't until she was at the checkout line that she saw a message from Doc.
Less than a minute later, she was sprinting out of the store, her purchases forgotten.
Nitrous was never the most careful driver at the best of times, and speeding to the police station wasn't any exception. The irony of it was lost on her, because she was too busy panicking. What if they locked up Doc and she never saw him again?!
She practically threw herself across the front desk of the police station. "I'm looking for my boyfriend! John MacKey! He's been arrested but it's all a terrible mistake and please don't send him to jail!"
Doc had drifted off, lazily leaned up against the wall, his whistling tune fading in and out between curses as other inmates wanted sleep for the night. Hours passed and his drunken haze started to wear off, but that horrendous cough hadn't. At times it sounded like he was bringing up everything from the inside up. It caused a few officers on their night shift to bang against the door.
"You alright?" they boomed in an deep voice.
"Just peachy," Doc replied standing on his feet, trying to walk it off.
When Nitrous appeared at the desk, the woman on the other side was ready to call back up right then and there. She was frantic. "Calm down mam, let me check the file." Time seemed to stand still while she checked her files, pulling up the name and in hearing that hacking noise knew who she was looking for.
"It's alright mam, he's been detained for the night for disorderly conduct. It's just a misdemeanor, nothing to panic over. Just drunk and causing problems in a public place."
"Can I bail him out?" Nitrous said, making her biggest and saddest eyes. "Please? I can't leave him here, you can hear the way he's coughing!"
"He needs a doctor not a bailout," the woman said shuffling through some paperwork. "Besides, what's a woman like you doing with such a guy? I'm sure this isn't the first time he's sat in jail."
She looked up to see the blonde's pleading eyes. She shoved over the paperwork with his fine printed on it. "It wouldn't hurt to leave him overnight. How much of that is show, hmm?" She whirled a brow.
Nitrous stiffened angrily. "John may be a little rough around the edges, but he's never been anything but kind and sweet and wonderful to me. And he's had that cough since last winter, and no doctors can figure out why, and stress makes it so much worse. He needs to be out of here."
She grabbed the paperwork as she was talking, looking over it. Easy enough fine to pay, that was good.
"Maybe get a leash and make sure he spends time with you instead of the gambling table. Things could have gotten out of hand." She stamped a few papers than gave the okay for John to be released.
He was still whistling when the guard came to retrieve him. "Must be your lucky night whistling dixie." Doc tipped his head as if he'd had a wide brimmed hat. He was brought to the front where Nicole waited, still cuffed and shivering.
He looked at the lady at the desk. "Need a heater mam, its as cold as a witch's tut in here," he gave her a wink, keeping that cough as tame as possible. The cuffs were taken off and he was handed over to his bailout.
"A smoke would be peachy about now."
"Doc!" Nitrous said, throwing her arms around him happily. "Let's get you out of here! Did you punch someone, is that how you got here?"
He'd sobered up considerably, but he was tired, weak and need substance in his system. He waited to be given his personal belongings, including rings and his lighter with cigarettes. He'd been itching for a smoke for too long.
He gave Nicole a gentle pat, arms circling around her. "I may have thrown a punch or two. Justly deserved mind you," he waved a finger toward the other cell before releasing her and straightening his attire. "I am not a cheat."
"Of course you aren't," Nitrous said, shooting a dirty look at the other cell.
She waited as Doc gathered up his things, hovering at his side like she was worried they were going to lock him up again. "Come on, sweetie, let's get out of here. It smells weird and you look hungry."
Doc rested his arm around Nicole's waist as she walked him outside. He smelled of smoke and alcohol. A warm shower was a must when they reached his apartment.
When he stumbled inside, he headed straight for the shower and a clean shave, looking much better than he had when Nicole had picked him up. He came out of the bathroom, towel wiping off the shaving cream from his face. He was still cold, but that could breathe without a heavy laced cough. He gave Nicole a sweet half cocked smile.
Nitrous had put a bag of popcorn in, since she wasn't sure what Doc would be in the mood to eat.
"So, what happened, honey?" Nitrous asked, giving him a smile.
Doc stood there, just having sobered up and itching for another round of whiskey. He slipped a cigarette in his mouth, letting it bounce between his lips while he talked as he fished for a lighter.
In a very nonchalant way he gave her the bare facts of the night. "Some lil' piss ant wasn't happy with the way I play cards." His cigarette finally lit he let the smoke fill in around him feeling a little better already. "He called me a cheat." He shrugged. "I don't take kindly to bein' called a cheat."
"Come here," she said, patting the couch next to her. "I don't blame you for hitting him. And you're out of jail now, so no harm, no foul!" She tilted her head consideringly. "Would some of me make you feel better? Some nitrous, I mean."
Settling the cigarette between his fingers he slipped in beside her, so close that he could smell the shampoo she'd used that morning. His arm encased her shoulders, careful not to drop any ashes on her soft skin. He kissed her cheek, his clean shaven face brushing her neck. He was far more open now when it came to their closeness. They'd finally hit that peak where they were more than just the gossip of the office.
"Some of any of you, would make me feel better, darlin'." She was a good influence on him. Most women used him or played his vices against him.
Nitrous giggled and rooted around hin her purse until she found a balloon. She always kept at least a few balloons on hand for just such and occasion. She closed her eyes and pulled some of her substance out from herself, breathing it out into the balloon. She filled the balloon with several large puffs of nitrous before pinching the end closed and handing it to Doc.
"There, that'll get the last of that jail out of your mind," Nitrous chirped. She wrinkled her nose. "Police stations are creepy. I always feel like I'm going to get tasered for no reason at all."
It wasn't exactly what he'd been expecting, but with Nitrous nothing was expected. It was who she was, he better be damned or have fun with her.
Pinching the balloon between his fingers he gave her a sideways smirk. "Not like the ol' days really where you slept on the floor with your own bottle o' whiskey. These gents now dun' know what jail is." He inhaled from the balloon, almost like the drag of a cigarette. Well, that would definitely put some pep in his system.
When he looked back over at her he just started to laugh.
