Who: Cocytus & Lethe
What: River-siblings having lunch
When: Sunday afternoon
Where: Cafe
Lethe loved Sunday afternoons. She had Sundays off more often than not, and today she and Cocytus were having lunch. Of the two rivers in the city, she found she related more to him than Styx. And he did good work, helping people deal with their grief.
She'd slept in until about ten, then got up, showered and dressed, then left her apartment on foot, heading to the cafe they were meeting at. It wasn't terribly far away, and she enjoyed walking places anyway. Once she arrived, she got a table by the window and sat down to wait for him.

Never having been the social river before, Cocytus it felt time to change that. Before he'd been able to be man-shaped, he just hadn't done it often, and as he was now forced to be in the shape of a man he figured that it couldn't hurt. Granted today he met one of his river siblings so it changed a bit.
Once dressed he walked to the restaurant and smiled to his sister. Granted she wasn't truly a full sister, but she was a river like the rest of them and thus it made them siblings. He walked to her table and leaned down to kiss her cheek, "hello dearest." He preferred Lethe over his other two siblings. He couldn't understand either of them, but Lethe was much like him.

She smiled up at him, quiet and pleased, and motioned for him to take a seat. "Hello darling," she said, untucking her legs from underneath her and sitting up. "It's been a while since I've seen you, how are things? Everyone's been so quiet lately. Or perhaps that's just me." She shrugged and flagged the waiter down to order a glass of wine.

Smiling he took a seat and ordered once the waiter dropped by. "Out of all the Greeks, we've always been the quiet ones. I heard their sorrows from their drama's and you made them forget. The others did their thing as well." He shrugged, "and only Styx is up here and she's never been one to socialize much with the rest of us. Too important." He smiled to that, "but things are well. My occupation keeps me very busy."

"And every day, I am more and more thankful for that," she said with a smile. "Strange how I could make everyone forget except myself. I remember all of their faces."
"Mine too," she agreed, letting out a sigh. "And it wears on the soul, as the saying goes. The looks on the faces of the families of the patients breaks my heart sometimes."

He shrugged, "it is our burden and our blessing sister. We are necessary, and it is the same for me. I know all their sorrows." He tilted his head to her confessions, "please. Tell me. I can help with the sorrow Lethe. I don't mind."

"Ironic that Oblivion doesn't forget, you mean?" she asked, a small smile on her lips. "And that Lamentation takes on all the sorrows they'll forget? Such strange creatures we are."
"I worry for them more than me," she told him. "I can cope, I can go on, that is my purpose and always has been. But when their loved ones forget their faces, it's as though their world is ending. Like someone took their heart and crushed it. Age does terrible things to the body and mind, and for all that medical science has advanced, some things it still cannot fix."

He chuckled, "we are strange. No one is doubting that. We don't belong, yet we are needed. We do our duty even now, the both of us. It is as it has always been."
He nodded, "I have many of the same worries and I know some of those emotions. Hearing sorrows and seeing how it affects my patients is always hard. It's why we're are part of this world. We do what we can." He shrugged, "I cannot always understand. Humans are strange."

"In the world, and yet not of it," she agreed. "And I will do my duty until I cease to exist, and I'm sure you are the same. Some things will never change."
"To ease their suffering, even a little," she said with a nod. "I managed to remove about a month's worth of memories from a living person, more than I'd thought possible. I slept for a full day afterwards, but I managed it. And yes, they are strange, but I like talking to my patients. So many of them have stories."

He tilted his head and set his hands on the table, "Impressive but be cautious. I've never tested my powers, not since I stopped being a lake." He shrugged, "few recall me, although I do know I can still freeze Satan." He chuckled to that, "but the other things, I'm not going to tempt myself. I am not that confident."
"Stories are good. Most of my patients have them. Never good ones but then again I'm used to the ones with the bad endings."

"Hindsight is always 20/20, I suppose," she said. "I don't intend to do anything like that any time soon, but she'd been tortured by Satan. Someone had to help her."
"And me," she agreed. "Why tempt Fate? They've written me into some poetry, and that helped. But nothing sustains anyone forever, you know? I'm happy with what I have, when it's time, it's time."
"I suppose you would be," she said quietly, sipping her wine. "I hear the ones about childhood and young adult life, most of which don't include the children sitting by their beds. It makes them bittersweet, but sometimes that's all they're given."

He frowned to that. He sill considered himself Satan's unofficial babysitter. Maybe he needed to sit on the being more. "Poor dear. Christians are complicated. I hope she mends, and send her to me if she needs more help."
"True," he sipped from his wine before shaking his head, "we're a morose pair aren't we?" He smirked to that, "ah well. Such is the task we have."
