Who: Richard the Lionheart and Prince John (originally posted by Richard)
When: Thursday just after noon, 11/4/11
Where: Outside a random restaurant
What: 'Oh God, it's you'
Warnings: Language
Richard's days were filled with planning, tactics, going over every possible strategy, and wishing he could be out there in the field. Sadly, he couldn't be so he kept his days full. It wasn't the perfect life, but it was better then what his counterpart back in England had to deal with. Richard would probably drive himself mad being involved in that wedding. Chances were his other half was driving himself mad.
But even he had to eat, and he knew this one place that did some of his favorites admirably well, and they had one waiter who was always fun to flirt with. Yet when he approached the building the door swung open to reveal a face Richard hadn't seen in decades. One he could do with not seeing again for a very, very long time. Instinctively he straightened to glare down at his youngest brother. "You."
Granted the anger was probably unreasonable but the tales had changed them both. "What are you doing here?"
John checked his watch again, and sighed. Damn. The man had got cold feet. He was supposed to be meeting with a client who was rather skittish, and he'd only just managed to coax the guy to have lunch with him. Looks like the man had chickened out. Swearing under his breath, John got up and strode back towards the door, shrugging on his wool coat as he did. He pushed the front door open and stepped onto the street.
There was that voice. He would never not know the person glaring down at him. "Minding my own business," he snapped back, eyes narrowing as he glanced his brother up and down. Nice words for two men who hadn't seen each other in a decade or two. "What do you want?"
It was almost instinct how his hands curled up. The fact they were drawing eyes was ignored. Somehow he felt personally insulted his brother had picked this city, this restaurant to be at.
The fact that, logically, John couldn't have known went beyond him. "Lunch, or did you miss the fact you're at a restaurant? How long have you been here?" Somehow, Richard already thought of this city as his, and he far from liked having to share anything with John. The mere idea was making his defenses go up.
There was no 'how've you been? Haven't seen you in ages' for them. Too much bad blood under the bridge.
"Half an hour," John snarked back, knowing full well Richard meant how long was he in New York, not at this restaurant. He straightened his back to make himself look taller. At least he dressed better than Richard. His three-piece suit and pea coat were a lot sharper than whatever it was Richard was wearing.
"What are you doing in New York? Come to try and take over again, have you?"
Out of uniform he always dressed casually. And advantage to the top of the top knowing him was he could dress as he liked. "Half hour too much then?" The question made him scoff and he crossed his arms, unconsciously trying to intimidate his youngest brother.
"I work here now, and I never took anything that wasn't mine to claim." He didn't say he couldn't try for anything here even if he wanted to. He had no love for playing the politician.
"You work here?" John said, and groaned. This meant they would bump into each other. It always happened like this. Whenever they were in the same city, they bumped into each other.
"Stay out of my way," he said fiercely, wishing his phone would ring or something to give him an excuse to walk away. "I've been here for seven years, and I intend to stay."
The thought of running into John at every possible moment wasn't one he treasured, but he'd die again before he'd let John know that. "Yes. I do." He wouldn't say as what though. He glanced down to his brother's outfit, "still pinching pennies where you can John?"
"Gladly, and while I've just gotten here I have no intention of leaving. You keep to yours and I keep to mine."
John sniffed haughtily. Richard was still so arrogant, he thought. Hadn't changed one bit. "My business, which I own, is doing very well," he said, giving the coat a stiff jerk at the collar to turn it up against the wind. "I don't share your penchant for expensive holidays in the Middle-East."
They were probably blocking people by now, but Richard didn't care. His main reasoning was to try and get under John's skin, to get him to back down. "Really? Can't imagine you having many partners seeing you would try and get their businesses when they are away."
"We can't all be as selfish in shirking our responsibilities to go play in the sand," John retorted. He paced to look Richard in the eye, blue eyes like ice. He hated that he was still shorter than Richard. "Are you still fucking your allies too? Too bad that didn't work out so well."
" While you tried usurping me, and squeezing everyone for their last dime?" It was easy to loom over John, easy to use his height to his advantage. "And fucking your allies wives and young daughters worked out so perfectly well for you? At least mine came back when it was needed. Didn't quite have what was needed again?"
"Seventeen children, limp Dick," John sneered. He always felt ugly around Richard, for some reason. It was probably the profound dislike that welled up inside him. All those years spent doing as he was told, kissing ass, bowing down, and Richard hadn't even had the decency to name him his heir before he selfishly died. "And more since. If what is needed is sucking cocks, I'm quite happy not having it."
He just raised an eyebrow, "and how many of those were illegitimate? How many of those were with a child barely out of her mother's apron?" He could do this blame game just as well. Richard knew his faults. "oh I never had to get on my knees John, unlike you. I'm sure you had to kneel and try to be a woman more then enough to set my allies against me."
The hatred on John's face make his good-looking features turn horrible. "I never had a child with girls that young," he hissed, not wanting anyone to overhear. "You shut your face about Isabella. You don't know a fucking thing about her. You were dead and I wish you'd stayed that way!" With that he turned on his heel and stalked away, fairly trembling with rage. He kept his hands at his sides until he was far enough away that Richard wouldn't notice him tearing at his nails with his teeth.
God, he hated his brother.
Gritting his teeth he had loomed closer, "you married a girl old enough to be your daughter, you slime. Oh good, we agree. I wish you'd stay dead myself." He let his brother storm off, pleased he'd gotten somewhat of the last word. And made John look worse then he looked right now.
His appetite spoiled he turned to go home. His brother could always rain on his parade.
