Hermes had been surprised by a visit from his daughter that afternoon after he had invited Hephaestus over for drinking. Hermes didn't mind the surprise and Angelia didn't mind the company. Angelia was one of Hermes' favourite children. As the daimon of messages, she embodied a very important aspect of himself. And she was a lot of fun.
"Darling, do you need two phones?" he asked, getting wine ready for his brother's visit.
"One is a phone and the other is a personal messenger," she informed him, shoving it in his face before quickly pulling it away before he had gotten a chance to look at it. "Don't be dull."
Hermes chuckled and he went to fetch some glasses. "I'll try not to." He watched her for a moment as she used both implements at the same time and then she looked up and smiled at him. "Are you drinking?"
"Sure," she said absently. "Getting an early start?"
Hermes poured Angelia a glass and he handed it to her. "I'll wait for your uncle, but you've been travelling all day. Drink up!"
To say that Hephaestus' run-in with Zeus had been an abysmal failure was probably putting it mildly. Yes, he'd said a lot of things he probably shouldn't have, but to him, that didn't make them any less valid.
So when Hermes had invited him over for drinks, he'd jumped at the offer. Hermes had always been kind to him, and he was more grateful for that than he could say.
He found his way to the penthouse fairly easily, knocking on the door and waiting to be invited inside.
"Oh, I'll get it!" Angelia dashed to the door and she pulled it open, grinning widely at Hephaestus. "Hello! I'm Angelia." In case he didn't remember, as many of them didn't, Angelia explained further. This became a necessity especially when being a daimon meant she had to use someone else's body to get around. "Hermes' daughter. He's in the kitche-"
Hermes appeared around the corner and he smiled at Hephaestus too. "He's here actually. Lia surprised me by showing up this morning. Do come in, there's wine already open."
He hadn't expected to be greeted by an energetic young woman, but then, with Hermes, it was difficult to predict just about anything. Then as she explained she was his daughter, he started to understand a bit more.
"Hello, Angelia, it's nice to meet you," he said, smiling. Then as Hermes popped up, he waved a hand in greeting. "Hello, Hermes. And thank you." He stepped inside, closing the door behind him.
"At least it was the good kind of surprise," he said. "Children turning up can only be a good thing."
"Absolutely," Hermes said, beaming at Angelia. He had such affection for her, considering what she personified. "Come on into the kitchen, we'll get you sorted."
Angelia fell in step beside Hephastus. "I've been in San Francisco" she said, even though he hadn't asked. "I didn't even know daddy got out of prison until last week when I tried to call him there."
"That would be because someone moved and didn't leave a forwarding address," Hermes said quickly.
"That's true, but I was escaping a lunatic. Ex-boyfriend. Anyway, I'll be moving here soon since daddy's out now." Angelia didn't really mind that she hadn't been asked. She liked giving out information. Which was how she attracted creeps in the first place.
"Just lead the way," Hephaestus replied.
"I've never been to San Francisco, but I've seen pictures," he said. Talking to Angelia was easy, and he didn't have to think about other, more unpleasant things. "And I didn't know he was in prison, or that he'd gotten out, until about a month ago, that was a bit of a surprise."
"Always a good reason to move away," he agreed. "And I'm sure he'll be glad to have you around. I only wish I knew what happened to my own daughter."
Hermes glanced at both of them and he poured a glass of wine for himself and for his brother. As he handed it over he said, "my captivity wasn't exactly something I wanted to advertise."
"Did you have a bitch?" Angelia asked, her eyes shining. She had her father's impish sense of humour and he loved it.
"No, thank you very much for asking that, Angel," Hermes said with a laugh. "Kids these days, hmm?" he said to Hephaestus, only to be elbowed in the side by Angelia.
"Thank you," Hephaestus said, accepting the glass and taking a sip. "And I can imagine it wouldn't be. Prison sounds deeply undesirable."
He choked on his wine laughing when Angelia asked her father if he had a bitch. It was precisely the kind of question a child of Hermes would ask, and it helped him to relax a little bit more, which was exactly what he needed right now.
"Kids indeed," he agreed, chuckling.
"Dad..." Angelia said in a falsely sad voice. "Is it because you were the bitch?"
"I survived prison without any bitchyness," Hermes replied, shaking his head in amusement. "Drink your wine, it will mean you aren't talking."
Angelia just beamed at him.
"Now that that's out of the way, how are you?" Hermes asked Hephaestus, still looking amused.
Hephaestus was pretty sure he was going to crack a rib from laughing. Times like this reminded him why he enjoyed spending time with Hermes.
"And I'm sure everyone is glad that you did," he remarked, grinning.
"Apart from the fact that I did a monumentally stupid-but very satisfying-thing, I'm wonderful," he said, with only the tiniest trace of bitterness. "I have three commissions I'm working on right now, they keep me occupied, and I like the work. And how have you been, Hermes?"
"Excellent. Business is going well," he said, referring to his shady dealings which provided immortals with identification they needed to get on in the mortal world. "Peitho is well, and Angelia is here."
"The last part being the most significant of course," Angelia winked.
Hermes just laughed and said nothing. He was not getting caught in a tug-of-war between Peitho and Angelia. Even jokingly.
"Have you heard from Zeus since? Has he bothered you?" Hermes said worriedly. And he did worry. He had seen how angry Zeus was about being 'disrespected'.
