WHO: Asteria & Hecate
WHEN: Late Saturday night
WHERE: Hecate's home
WHAT: A mightily pissed off Titan.
WARNINGS: language, breaking crap, possibly violence
Theirs had been a chance meeting on the night time streets of New York City, but for Asteria it was nowhere near meaningless.
Asteria had recognised Zeus the moment she laid eyes on him. His arrogant face was burned into her memory- how could it not be after what he'd done to her? But more insulting than his mere existence was the fact that he had no idea who she was. His gaze over her was barely interested, barely curious, and entirely without recognition.
And to Asteria's shame she had run. Again. She had pounded her feet against pavement and heard her breath ripping free of her lungs as she exhausted herself to get home. But Zeus didn't follow, didn't care. The idea that he had destroyed her entire life only to not even give a damn now made her more furious than anything else. At the very least she deserved to be remembered!
In the living room one of Hecate's dogs looked up at her with curiosity but blood throbbed in Asteria's head and then, with a scream of fury and frustration, she slammed a hand out at the closest side table and sent it sprawling, the things on it crashing into the wall alongside it.
But that wasn't enough and Asteria wanted to tear the whole world down. But she couldn't. All she could do was loose her rage on this room, on these beautiful things that belonged to her daughter. She couldn't think of Hecate then though, nor could she think of her husband - the husband who she still only allowed to touch her if there was violence and roughness in the gesture, and even then very rarely. Asteria could think of nothing but the scream that filled her throat and the destructive rage that had taken her over. She spent almost her whole life now in silence and stillness but those things were both gone from her now.

The noise had woken her rather easily. At first she thought it was a robber, but few could get passed her wards and those who did she left to her dogs. Hecate rarely had to worry for anything. Well anything mortal. If this was an immortal, that'd be different. It wouldn't be her cousins, she kept the secret of her mother well and thus had yet to risk Zeus' anger, so she'd gotten a knife and walked downstairs.
She watched her spirits flee and then realized it was her mother. In a state she hadn't seen Asteria in, for a long time. Hecate's own temper was a slow thing, very little offended her, but seeing her mother like this now she had to wonder and worry.
Rather then intrude, they were only things and could be replaced, she lowered her hand and let the dogs come to her feet. Asteria would calm in her own time, and then she'd ask what was wrong.

It took a long time for Asteria to actually calm down enough to even realise her daughter was nearby, so caught up in her own rage. (Asteria had been well matched when they married her to the Titan of destruction. Her own temper was a bright, burning thing that could ignite without warning.)
Finally the star-Titan stopped tearing the room apart as she looked over at Hecate and then, more heavily than she had expected, she let herself drop down to kneel on the floor, exhausted.

Hecate felt like an odd white sheep. She'd never lost her temper like this. She kept it contained, released it in intervals. Knowing her parents few things would be left standing if she kept it all too bottled up.
When her mother fell to her knees she moved forward, putting a glass of water in ehr hands and kneeling beside her. "What happened?" If someone had hurt her mother, Hecate would take her vengeance. She was still powerful, more powerful then some seeing the wiccans whispered her name, and Asteria was one of the few who she'd show her vengeful side for.
"Did someone hurt you?"

"Nothing hurts me," Asteria said roughly, her throat raw from screaming. She held the glass in her hand, looking at it as though it was something unrecognizable. "I am stone and sand."

Gently she went to take the glass from her mother's fingers. "no mama, not anymore. You're flesh and blood now. Just like me and papa alright." Smiling she tried to catch her mother's eyes. "It's me mama. Hecate. You're in my home and if someone did something to you, you tell me and I'll deal with it." Her parents had looked after her when she'd been young, now it was her turn to repay the favor.

Asteria looked at her daughter, the girl she'd given birth to and taught, the girl she'd loved above all things, the girl who'd become a woman who'd taken the wrong side. "Our daughter," Asteria said as she watched her, "and you aligned yourself with him."

For a moment she tensed, reminded of all the other times she'd been scolded. But this was different. This was a topic she'd avoided, but knew would come up. Either Perses would have brought it up, or her mother would. She knew she would need to answer for her choices.
So she raised her chin and looked to her mother, "I'm a Titan, a powerful one. You gave me powers over earth, sea, and sky. You taught me how to listen to the whispers of the dead, and how to bring back those who fell under my hand. You and Father taught me everything I know, and I was called Queen for it. After what he did to you, I didn't have a choice. I knew I was two possible things. Pretty enough to catch his eye, or too powerful to remain ignored. And you both taught me to survive, so I did."
She took the shard of glass and set it away, picking up the other pieces of glass. "I didn't want to end up imprisoned, or chased. I was scared. I had to protect myself. So yes I aligned myself with him because it was that or death. Look at what he did to the rest of us mother. He forced my cousins into servitude, and put me in Hades' realm. Such are the benefits of being a victor. You get to decide what happens to you. And if you wonder why I didn't act, ask Prometheus what happens when you defy Zeus. I did what I could, I studied what I could to learn how to change you back but at best I was a hostage ward."
She sighed and rose, "I did what I did to survive. But I never vowed on Styx that I'd support him. And if it is him that hurt you, I'll fight him. I wasn't powerful enough before. Now I am. Besides if he kills me I go to Hades. He's not a bad sort, for an Olympian."

All of her daughter's words burned, but it was the fire of painful truths that couldn't be fought. Would she have had Hecate die, or be tortured or trapped? Would she wish that fate upon her own child? Even Asteria wasn't that cold.
She drew herself slowly to her feet to stand at her full height. "He looked right through me. That worthless Olympian chased me until there was no escape but to be nothing, but tonight he looked on my face and didn't even know who I was."

"Oh," because she couldn't find anything else to say. She'd feel similar anger she supposed, and telling her this was better, that her mother never needed to worry about being chased again, wouldn't help. "That I can't change. It's who and what he is."
She sighed, "I'll go get a broom to clean that up."

Asteria didn't apologise for the broken things or for the mess, even as Hecate went to get the broom. She just remained standing there in the room, still, even when her daughter returned.
Eventually she said, "he took you from me." Asteria should have been allowed to watch her daughter grow, to see her become the Titan she deserved to be. They should have been a family, especially considering Perses and Asteria had actually had a happy and faithful marriage unlike many of their kind.

Quietly she swept up the broken pieces of glass. She didn't expect an apology, and understood her mothers anger. She figured she would feel the same thing.
"I know mama," she looked to her mother. She hadn't had enough time with Asteria. There had been no one to explain things to her, no one to tell her of the things expected of her as a wife. No one to arrange a better marriage for her. She loved Hermes, but she didn't like being second. Few would, she imagined. "But you're here now. I can't change the past. I would if I could. I can do something about the now though, and he won't take you from me again. I'll kill him if he tries."
