WHO: Jade Aldebrandi & Prometheus
WHEN: Thursday night
WHERE: The studio building the two of them share
WHAT: Artists in a blackout
WARNINGS: language
For Jade, late nights in her studio were a pretty normal affair. Going home got pushed out the way by whatever she was currently working on, which tonight was a series of large coloured glass bowls for a client.
The studio was always too hot this time of year, even at night, and she dressed herself in singlets and jeans as she worked, a thin sheen of sweat across her brow. (Quite a few little burn scars littered her bare arms, from both her beginnings of working with glass and her earlier years of helping out with out people's interesting art projects. Jade had never been overly careful with her body and she wasn't a stranger to having a few drinks before playing with blowtorches. Accidents happened.)
Every now and then Jade's phone would beep with another text from Krisha while they organized their weekend together - likely Bollywood movies until she crawled into his bed to steal it away from him and sleep - but other than that Jade was alone, The Beatles the only ones keeping her company.
Jade was in the middle of blowing what was going to be a beautiful shade of carmine for the set when the power went out, the only light in the room now coming from the bright glow of the molten glass on the end of her pipe. She let forth a stream of expletives and in the darkness found her nearby water bucket, dropping the glass into it and letting it crack.
"Horse-fucking, cock-sucking, mothercunting son of a bitch electric," Jade complained, trying to find her way around the dark by just the starlight because she remembered that the only torch she'd had here she'd broken a few months ago.
Carefully she made her way outside, hoping that guy who was in the studio attached her hers was around. He seemed to keep as strange hours as she did. Before now Jade seen him a few times and they'd done the polite nod of 'yes, we share a space but we're not friends, carry on'. But if he had a torch then they were going to be best friends.
She knocked on the front door heavily, rubbing the bridge of her nose underneath her glasses. "Hey," she called out through the door. "I'm the woman from the other studio, please be here?"
Prometheus liked his studio. It was quiet and he could lose himself into the art. Besides going home would remind him of the quiet there, how he couldn't drink any of it away and he always felt there were damned eagles floating around.
Here that was all pushed away for the sculptures. He'd been working on Pandora's bust before the lights went out. He wouldn't need her around until it was done. Her features were scorched just behind his eyes, and he felt like the worst sort of person for it. He let her think she irritated him, didn't care for her, because he wanted Epimetheus happy. But then suddenly he didn't see a damned thing anymore and he blinked.
It was easy for him to find a light, he always had fire on him, and the studio was lit by the eerie flame before he heard the knock. He remembered the woman who spoke and rose, figuring it wasn't just his part that had gotten suddenly dark. Led by the flame of the lighter he opened his door and smiled at her, "evening. Yours went out too then I guess? Everything alright?"

Thank Krishna that the guy was around. (Not that Krishna had much to do with her daily serendipitous moments, but when you were friends with Gods it was best to keep them in mind when things went right.) Jade nodded to the both of his questions. "Yeah," Jade told the man, "but I was hoping I could borrow - actually," she said with a tilt of the head, "can I borrow you?"

He blinked to the question, then figured she didn't have a light. Combined with the fact she was mortal he was naturally inclined to help her. The last time he'd given a light to the mortals it'd gotten him chained to a rock. Even knowing that he'd still do it all over again.
So with a smile he nodded. "Of course. What do you need?" He stepped into the hall, glancing to the woman, "I don't think we ever introduced ourselves." He offered his empty hand then, "Theon Desmotes."

"I need to turn my furnaces off but I don't have a flashlight and today is the day I forget my lighter," Jade told him with an eyeroll. She took the offered hand and shook it with a smile. "Jade Aldebrandi."

He shook her hand before retrieving his own. "Ah, well luckily I always have fire on me." There was some irony to that, somewhere. He also knew the lighter wouldn't give out. There were some perks to being himself. "So please, lead the way. I also think this is fate's way of saying I should probably head home."

"Maybe," Jade agreed as leading him out and back around to her studio. "I think I'll stick around, see if the power comes back. I was in the middle of a project." She unlocked the heavy door and entered the darkness, swearing as she ran her shin into one of the boxes of equipment near the door.
"Watch your step," she told Theon and then reached out to find his wrist with the lighter, guiding him along with the light towards the end of the room with the furnaces.

He knew that feeling, "same here. But if I can't see the details will get messed up. And I suppose I do need sleep." Not that he ever slept well. He kept waking, expecting an eagle on his bed, ready to start the entire thing over again.
He never said he had rational fears.
Her cursing made him smile and he let her lead him to the furnaces. "Here, you know how to turn these off. I'll just give you some light." He could make it a bit brighter. But he'd do that with her back turned. No need for awkward questions. "So what exactly do you make? Don't think I asked."

"Sleep is for the weak," Jade just smiled.
At the furnaces she moved over to the switches, the heat from the closed furnaces still stifling this close, the flame from Theon surprisingly bright enough to do all this easily by. She turned off all three of them in turn, talking as she did. "Glass sculpture," Jade told him, turning the dials to properly lock the one that still had molten glass inside. "Mostly I do blown pieces."
She turned back around to Theon and nodded towards the table behind him, the one with a pair of candlesticks and some of the bowls she'd been working on. "What sort of things do you do over there?"

He laughed to that, "well weak I am then. Besides I can't work in the dark, like I said. But I'll see if I can't figure out to give you some light until they turn the lights back on. Could be a while though."
He watched her, curious to see how it worked and when she turned the light was still bright and the lighter in no danger of exploding. He nodded to the explanation and looked to the pieces. "They're nice. I like the color."
"I'm a sculptor, although I specialize in clay. Mostly human figures, abstract or otherwise. Sometimes I do animals, but it's not my style."

Jade shrugged. "Nah, can't work without the power and being here doing nothing will just shit me off. Probably I'll head home too."
"Thanks," she said when he complimented my work. "Buy one and pay my rent," she told him, her tone dryly joking.
Jade nodded when he talked about his own work and smiled. "Should have figured you for a sculptor. You've got that 'sculptor' look to you."

He nodded, leaning on the table and keeping the lighter lit without really pressing anything. He just figured she wouldn't notice. He chuckled o the offer then shook his head, "I would if I didn't have my own rent to worry about. But I'll certainly suggest you to my clients."
"I do? That's a first." He didn't think he looked like a sculptor, or anything else, but he took the compliment easily enough. "Do you need me to walk you to your car? It's pretty late." He wouldn't like to see her hurt, and he had his own sense of chivalry.

"Struggling artists," Jade lamented with a sigh and a smile. "What a sexy existence we lead." (Although Jade always knew that if she needed help she had a certain Hindi deity who was happy to help her out.)
"Saw you outside smoking once. You've got those sculptor forearms." Then she added, with a little grin. "I may have dated a few sculptors in my time, so I can spot you all from a mile off. And you could walk me to my car, if I had one. But I don't."

He wasn't really struggling but he grinned and nodded, "one of ramen and not enough sleep obviously." Anything was better then the rock though, so he far from minded.
With a smile he looked to his arms, "I'll take your word for it." He frowned then, not liking the idea of having her walk alone. He'd managed to get the apartment above the studio, but he had no idea where she lived. "Well, then let me walk you to wherever you need to be then."

Jade raised her eyebrow a little, amused at his offer. "I live a half hour walk from here," she told him. Jade had no illusions about being invulnerable, but she walked the streets with confidence and she carried pepper spray and so far she'd had only minor problems with creeps. She didn't too much fear the night time streets of New York City, even around his neighbourhood.

"Best get to walking then. I'd feel much better if I see you home safe." He couldn't let the girl walk by herself. His instinct was to look after the mortals even if he no longer made them out of clay. If she'd get hurt he'd blame himself. He had enough guilt.

Jade hoped she wouldn't have to use it on him either, although if she did she supposed it might teach her to not let strange men walk her home?
"Depends if you mean today - because I've been working on a project since about four pm - or in general - because I've rented this studio for about two years-ish." Once outside she pulled the door shut behind them and locked it again.

He'd realized he had forgotten a coat when he had stepped outside, but wasn't too worried about it. Unless it snowed like it had in the winter very few things bothered him. An advantage, he supposed, about having been chained to a rock for a good while and enduring all sort of weather. "Well that makes me feel better."
He followed her, setting his hands in his pockets as he did. "A bust for my sister in law. She wanted to show my brother she loved him, so she decided to do it by having me make a bust of her." He shook his head, "don't ask. I still don't get it either."

Smiling he shook his head, "no. Just very vain I imagine." He shrugged, "she's paying and it is for my brother. I can't really say no. I told her to take a trip to the local lingerie store and the effect would be the same but I guess she didn't like my logic."
Jade laughed brightly at that. "You can't go wrong with lingerie and men," Jade nodded, shifting her bag on her shoulder as they walked.
"So," Jade asked, "how long have you been renting next to me?"

He gave a smile, "that's kind of what I figured. I can't find any logic behind it so I stopped trying. Speaking as a classical male I'd appreciate the lingerie a bit more." He kept following her, putting the route into his mind so he'd find his way back home.
He frowned then, having forgotten how long he'd been in this city. Probably too long if he'd lost track. "A good while. Long enough for the owner to let me rent out the apartment above it. I've forgotten really."

He gave a smile and a shrug, "I'd rather see you home then learn you got hurt. So yes I'm into the chivalry thing, even if I call it manners." He rather liked the walk. Jade shrugged as well, a gesture of 'your call, dude' as they carried on. If he wanted to play knight in shining armor and all that then Jade saw no reason to stop that. The company wasn't bad, although Jade had to remind herself that sculptors were her kryptonite. Damn their wily hands.
"So other than the brother and sister-in-law, you got any other family in the city?" Jade tilted her head in question, giving him a sideways glance. "You live above your studio and admit to almost living inside it, so I'm guessing no wife unless she's incredibly tolerant, and no kids either?"

"No, not anymore." He doubted he would ever see Pronoea again. Her memory was long faded and few even remembered he'd ever been married. It saddened him, seeing, but on the other hand he'd barely known her when he'd come back after the rock. He had some slight hope of seeing his son again, but didn't want to be disappointed.
"She'd drag me out though, if I got too much. Died a while ago." He set his eyes to the ground for a moment before looking back to her, "I have a son, but I don't see him much. What about you?"

Smiling he held up his hands, "no it's fine. It was a long time ago. I don't mind being asked." He'd had a long time to grieve over his family. Now he just focused on the good memories.
"Worse things to spend one's life on." He set his hands back in his pockets and smiled. "I suppose we're alike in that the art is our life now. At least it is for me. I should probably try and fix that."

"I don't mind art being my life," said Jade as she pulled her hair out of its band and ruffled it. "Working with molten glass is a lot less complicated that marriage, and you get burned less around it." She gave him a little grin at that.
"Besides, I feel like I've finally managed to reach a point where art actually pays off, instead of being something I have to find time for around some shitty dead end job I hate. Because I've had enough of those by now."

She sounded like she'd been burned before, but he figured he could get that. "I suppose it is easier. Clay doesn't talk back though, doesn't offer company. You can talk to it but then people think you're strange."
"It's always nice to go from starving artist to less starving artist," then again he'd always made his way with his art but he'd been at it so long and had some savings for rainy years.

The only time Jade's parents had ever expressed true disappointment in her had been when she'd gotten married, and since they had turned out to be right she couldn't quite fault them for it in that instance. It made Jade want to ask Theon about his relationship with his kid, the one he said he didn't see much any more. But probably that was just a little too personal for their first conversation.
"We're all grown ups now," said Jade with a shrug. "Eventually parents have to learn to sit down and shut up when it comes to their kids. Not," she added, "that I have any idea about raising kids. I already told you that all mine are made of glass. The only parenting tip I've learned from that is not to leave them on the floor."

It was either sort of adorable that Theon thought she was inviting him to actually have a drink, or it was a clear sign he was completely uninterested. She supposed she'd find out.
"I think I can find coffee," Jade told him with a smile as they reached the steps of her place and she pulled out her keys to unlock it. Then she waited until he was inside before locking it again. Jade's apartment was small and boxy, and when the neighbors on either side did almost anything Jade could hear it clearly. But it was a roof over her head and it was filled with things she'd made, or that others had made for her.
She led Theon through to the kitchen. "Coffee," she pondered out loud, opening up one of the high cupboards to find it. Jade mostly only drank coffee if it was to mix with whiskey.
He just figured he would have some coffee. He wasn't always the brightest one or always picked things up right away. Hindsight was his brothers expertise, not his.
He followed her up the stairs, not able to say much about her apartment. His own barely looked like anyone lived in it. At least this one looked lived in.
"Thank you." He found himself a seat and sat down.

"I promise to be kind and quiet. And not break anything," he grinned to the image of seeing her angry before reaching for the cup. "Black. I hardly ever put anything in it. Thank you again."

"You're welcome," Jade said as she brought over the mugs and coffee pot so that it could brew on the table for them. "I'd offer you something to eat as well," said Jade, "but I haven't been shopping for the while. Anything I gave you has been in the fridge too long."

"It's quite alright, you've been more then gracious so far." Truth be told he was hardly ever hungry and by the time he realized he was he could clean out his own fridge. He'd learned to ignore the hunger after a bit. "So, do you come from around here?"

"Nah," Jade said as she relaxed back into the chair. "Born in Michigan but I never lived anyone place for more than a year until I left my parents and set up in Seattle. Moved in with an old family friend who was nice enough to put up with a teenage girl on his couch. Since then it's only been there and here. I like not moving now that it's an option."
She leaned forward and dumped two sugars into her empty mug. "How about you then? Where do you hail from?"

He took his own mug and sipped from it. He'd always be grateful for the mortals to have figured out coffee. Even ambrosia was nothing compared to this. "Greece, actually. Born, raised, then moved here. I prefer it here. Not so warm."

"Greece," Jade said with surprise. "You don't really have the accent anymore. Not that I even know what the fuck a Greek accent sounds like. Ancient Greek ones were British according to the movies," she joked.

"Always kind of weird to me. But I suppose everyone's British in movies." He just found it mildly amusing. He knew some didn't. "And I've lived here for ages. I lost whatever accent I had. I hope it doesn't disappoint you."

"I'm sure I'll survive," Jade teased and then, without asking or even being subtle out it, she reached out to lift his hands, looking at his fingers. "Clay," she said with a smile, raising her eyes up to his. "Yes, definitely a sculptor then."

He was a little confused by that, but let her study his hands. "Yes. I said I was. I'm sorry I think I missed something there." He wondered if she was flirting with him. He was always a bit late with catching on those things.

He was gay, wasn't he? She kept picking up the gay ones recently. So she let his hand go with a smile still on her lips and shrugged. "I think my motives for inviting you in were less innocent then I said."

"Oh," he gave a shy smile and shrugged. "I'm very rusty at this, and not that I'm not interested but you were threatening me with pepper spray only a few moments ago. I haven't had a gorgeous woman flirt with me in a long time."

"Yeah, the pepper spray line is my unique come on," Jade said, sounding almost serious if it wasn't for that curled up corner of her lip. "Worked on you like a charm, didn't it?"
And then he called her gorgeous which was a pretty good sign and she leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand. "Gorgeous, huh?" she teased.

"Yes. I guess no one told you that's my secret thing." He smirked at her, feeling old and out of practice. When had been the long time he'd had anyone flirt with him? Seeing he couldn't remember he figured it had been far too long.
Smiling he glanced over her before nodding. "Yes, very."

"Ah, pepper spray kink," Jade said knowingly, leaning in a little more. "And all this time I've been attacking strangers in the street with it when you were right there in the building." She smiled at him, a little teasing, her voice low. "For future reference though: when a woman invites you in for coffee and it's past midnight? She's probably not actually offering coffee."

He chuckled, "yes the horrible stinging situation is just what I need to get me in the mood. Just, please don't try it." He ran a hand through his hair and along the back of his neck, feeling a bit out of sort. "I haven't met anyone in a very long time. I'm not lying when I say I'm very rusty. And we did just meet."
He lowered his eyes and toyed with the mug, "and that's my cue to shut up."

"Drink your coffee, sculptor," Jade grinned, picking up her own. "I'm not a prowling lioness and I'll even let you leave unmolested."
She supposed he did have a point in that they'd only just met. Jade had clearly been spending far too much of her time around the 'free love' types lately.

He was a bit disappointed, but he'd never been good at it. Instead he just smiled, "yes ma'am." The coffee helped to put his mind off everything. Maybe he should try and be more social.

Jade drank her coffee as well and then asked, "So since we're sitting here drinking coffee together at-" she leaned back to see the clock on the microwave "-2.09 - shit, really? caffeine was such a bad idea." She found her train of thought again. "Since we're sitting here doing the first meeting things, tell me something completely random about you for my entertainment."

"I live to entertain." Smiling he drank his coffee and thought. "I'm always carrying a lighter on me. Stupid habit that doesn't help me quitting smoking, but I always have one." He nodded at her, "and what about you?"

"I've been meaning to quit smoking too," Jade told him and then smirked a little. "For about seven years."
The best random fact about Jade would be something to do with Krishna and the knowledge of gods, but that wasn't what she was going to share. "My real name is Jadeite Saffron Amarantha and I was thankfully home schooled my entire life so I didn't have to endure the teasing for that little piece of parental torture. And I love tacky Bollywood films."

He chuckled, "I think smoking is part of the artist gig. I don't know many artists who don't. Adds to the whole image I imagine."
He set his mug down and leaned his head on his hands. "Interesting choice of names. You know you can get it changed right? And you'll have to explain that to me. I don't think I'm familiar with the term."
Just talking about smoking was making her want to light up, but she stuck with her coffee for now.
"Oh, I did change it," Jade nodded. "At twenty-one I was done with signing that on official forms. I can't believe you don't know Bollywood though! It's amazing Indian cinema, all musicals and bright colours and melodrama. You're missing out."

"Understandable," he was forced to change names every so often but he had help there. He'd always prefer his actual name though. "No I'm afraid I'm horribly uncivilized. I don't watch most of anything. Just work on my art. Not the most social person. In all honesty I haven't talked this much in ages."

Laughing he shook his head, "hardly. I have pretty strong vocal cords." He frowned before running a hand through his hair, "Well that sounded better in my head." He glanced to the clock and set his mug down. "I should go. Got a bit of a walk back."

Jade, with a smile, reached out and shook his hand since that appeared to be what they were doing - very formal but Jade could do that. "I'll see you around," she said as she led him to the door and opened it. Leaning against the frame she said, "don't let the bed bugs bite."

He just thought he was being polite. "I do hope so." He walked out of the door and smiled back at her, "hardly the last of my worries. Have a good night." He set his hands in his pockets then to start the walk home. At least he hoped he'd made a friend.
