One blog about VotDT & two essays on writing [Oct. 12th, 2008|11:22 pm]

Today we have one blog about VotDT and two essays for writers.

Blog

Personal Reflections on Voyage of the Dawn Treader
http://www.mrdawntreader.com/the_dawn_treader/reflections-on-the-voyage.html
Christian perspective on the book. Love the illustration at the top!

Essays

The first time I ever tried to have two of my characters make love I found that I wasn’t really conveying the scene too well. Luckily I stumbled upon Icarus’ essay on the topic, and another romantic fan-fic was born. Icarus doesn’t write Narnian fan-fic as far as I know, but I consider her essays to be applicable to all writers. I hope they prove as useful to you as they have been to me!

How to write a battle scene by Icarus

How to write a sex scene* by Icarus

Enjoy!

*Actually, this is not the name the author gave it, but I didn’t want to use the F word in an open blog.

A little early this week - I have a busy day tomorrow. This week we again have three rec posts:

Art: 3 Royal Portraits

Non-fiction: 1 Prince Caspian review + further reading

Fiction: 3 gen fics suitable for all ages

Next week we are looking for your recs in the following areas:

Art, Non-fiction, Fiction: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

These recs will be credited to the first person to tell me about them, unless s/he prefers to remain anonymous. And please feel free to post your own recommendations directly to the community, as long as they are set in or concerning Narnia.

Further News

A new Narnia fic exchange is starting. Fics need to be 800+ words. Further details at:
http://community.livejournal.com/narniaexchange/976.html

I have also come across another Narnia recs list! Unfortunately no-one shared with me the fact of its existence, or I probably wouldn’t have started this one. However now that I have planned this one as far as Christmas I am not going to stop, especially as we are on different sites. I am sure the LJ site must have a lot of great recommendations, so you can check it out for yourself at:

Enjoy!

3 gen fics suitable for all ages [Oct. 5th, 2008|08:13 am]

This week we have a dearth of responses to my challenge, so instead I would like to recommend for your attention one heartwarming fic on the origins of a Narnian festival and two short, off-beat humour fics.

Northern Winds by Narelena
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3358142/1/Northern_Winds
Winter brings back the memories of Her reign in Narnia.

I love the little tributes to canon throughout, and the underlying premise of the fic. Of course Winter would bring back bad memories: snow and ice and the Witch are twined together in Narnians’ memories.

Edmund: Owner's Guide and Maintenance Manual by opera13
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2731882/1/Edmund_Owners_Guide_and_Maintenance_Manual

Just your average Edmund. Enjoy!

Slightest Inkling by H Max Marius
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3163367/1/Slightest_Inkling
Professor Kirke writes to CS Lewis

This is little bigger than a snippet but I liked the way the fic twined reality and fiction in a plausible way. I hope you do too.

I hope you enjoy these recommendations and please feel free to post your own. Tell us why you enjoy the fic, where to find it and warn for ratings and slash/het.

This week we have three rec posts to start the group off:

Art: portraits of King Peter and Queen Lucy

Non-fiction: 4 POVs on the 2005 movie of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Fiction: 3 authors who have created distinctive multi-fic Narnia universes

Next week we are looking for YOUR recs in the following areas:

Art: I would like to recommend portraits of Queen Susan and King Edmund, so if you know of a particularly good one please share it!

Non-fiction: reviews and blog posts regarding the recent movie Prince Caspian. Did you read any reviews or blogs that made you really think - or sent you sky-high in fury? Please share them.

Fiction: Must-read Narnian stories. This is my challenge to you: If you could only recommend ONE story about Narnia to share with a friend, which one would you recommend? Which story touched you, inspired you or made you squee fangirlishly? Please share it with us, so we can all enjoy it.

These recs will be credited to the first person to tell me about them, unless s/he prefers to remain anonymous.

And remember that I am hoping that eventually this will become a self-sustaining recs community, as well as a resource for new readers. So please feel free to post your own recommendations at any time, as long as they are set in or concerning Narnia.

This week's art recs are both portraits painted on doors! Please don't think because of this that they only have novelty value, however - they are both great paintings, I think!

Three Narnian fan-fiction worlds [Sep. 28th, 2008|03:02 pm]

tetsubinatu
[Tags|]

As my first post I would like to recommend for your attention three wonderful writers who have created amazing worlds of Narnian fan-fiction.

elecktrum
http://www.fanfiction.net/u/450594/elecktrum
The first place I looked for Narnian fan-fiction was FanFiction.net, and luckily I happened upon elecktrum's work quite quickly, with Black Dwarfs, Blue River - still my favourite story of her work. Then I glommed the rest of her Narnia fics!

eleckrum is the 'lightest' of the three recommended writers in this post, which is not to say that her work has no darker shades, but I think her work retains more fantasy and I would not hesitate to let my 11yo read it, which I would not do with the other two writers. The only reservation I would have is that one of the characters remembers being sexually abused at some point, but I think it is very tastefully handled.

elecktrum states that she is a Christian writer, however she does not bludgeon the reader over the head with it, so for non-Christians I would say that if you read C.S.Lewis then you are already reading Christian literature and will not be offended by elecktrum's work.

burntcopper
http://burntcopper.livejournal.com/tag/fic:narnia
burntcopper does not have as much work on display as the other writers, but the fics of hers that I have read, I have really enjoyed. She focusses upon Edmund and Peter as warriors, and proposes interesting careers for them in Post-War Britain's army. They are edgy and funny. Enjoy!

bedlamsbard, especially her Warverse
http://bedlamsbard.livejournal.com/260939.html
I find bedlamsbard's Warverse a little too dark for my usual tastes, but she has a large body of work of excellent quality. Her Peter in particular can be quite chilling. Like the other recommended authors, the primary relationships explored are the sibling ones, although there is at least one non-explicit slash fic in this 'verse.

I hope you enjoy these recommendations and please feel free to post your own. Tell us why you enjoy the fic, where to find it and warn for ratings and slash/het.
