[opal] [sidebar] Re-ordering sidebar and adding extra boxes

First, the code you're going to have to put in your theme layer: {new stuff in red}

function Page::lay_print_sidebar () {
$this->lay_print_summary();
var string text = """<div class="columnitem">STUFF YOU WANT IN YOUR NEW BOX </div>""";
print_box("TITLE OF NEW BOX ", $text);

$this->print_linklist();
$this->lay_print_freetext();
$this->lay_print_calendar();
}

Of course, you can put these in any order you want. For example:

function Page::lay_print_sidebar () {
var string text = """<div class="columnitem">STUFF YOU WANT IN YOUR NEW BOX </div>""";
print_box("TITLE OF NEW BOX ", $text);
$this->lay_print_freetext();
$this->print_linklist();
$this->lay_print_freetext();
$this->lay_print_summary();
$this->lay_print_calendar();
}

Opal Overrides

Just a couple of overrides I find helpful for Opal:

Removing background color from friend's usernames )

Adding CSS )

I'll be working out how to add extra boxes and taglists soon.

Comments: I've never actually used this layout style. If there are any issues, please let me know and I'll try and work it out.

First, you must go to your layers. Under Create Layer, choose create top-level layer > type: Layout, then click on create.

You'll see your new layout layer under where it say 'Child of layer 1: LiveJournal S2 Core, v1'. Click edit and past in the coding I've provided.

Layout Layer

After you've pasted in the code, it the 'save and compile' button at the top, and that should be all. You'll now have Nebula to choose from in your customization wizard.

How To: Adding Modules to Bloggish Sidebar

First, you'll need to know how to create a theme layer. This will be the code you'd put in there:

If you have a 2 column layout, you first put this code in: Sidebar order for 2 column )

If you have a 3 column layout, then you'd first put this code in: Sidebar order for 3 column )

After you have put one of those codes in, and gotten all your modules in the order you want them [and taken out any you don't want in there], you then put in this code: Wherein you decide how many extra modules you want and what goes in them. )

Bloggish layout "There Be Dragons Here"

Journal layout: Bloggish
Credit: Not essential but a mention would be nice
Comments: This is my very first layout, which was a lot of fun to make. It's an S2, so you need to set your style to S2, Bloggish, with "none" selected under "Themes". Then go to "Custom Options" to "LayoutType" and select "Two column, Sidebar on left".

Cut and past the code in the CSS box.

Please host the images on your own site as they will eventually come off mine and the journal would look all blooey, just go into the CSS code and change the URL for your image source.

Zip file HERE

It is best viewed on 1024 x 768, and may look odd under other settings. It should work with most browsers.

As it is my first layout, I may not have done everything right either for this post or for the layout, so please let me know.

How To: Creating a Theme Layer

For those customizations that need more than just CSS over-rides, you're going to have to create a theme layer. It can be extremely easy, trust me. You have to remember, as far as I know, this is only for paid and permanent [self-committed and permanently insane] accounts.

In case you've made changes to your customization wizard already. )

Now, for actually creating a theme layer!

If you have any issues with this tutorial, feel free to ask away.

Just wondering

Would anyone be interested in me posting 'How To' guides on how to create a theme layer?

Also, there's been an update to my Smooth Sailing code. You can get the details in the Smooth Sailing source code post.

I still haven't figured out what's up with the Flexible Squares layout. Someone had suggested it might be a bug in the IJ coding, and not in my FS source code. It's hard to tell for me.

Given that I am a complete idiot

I have not been able to correct whatever is wrong with the code for Flexible Squares that pushes the entries on the Entry Page [not the reply page, or any of the other pages].

If you happen to know what's doing it, or know someone who was able to correct it, please let me know.

In other news, I'll be working on desgins for the layout types offered here. That way, everyoone can have pretty journals.

Also, feel free to post your designs! Submissions are moderated, however, anyone can submit a post. Also, feel free to pimp the comm out.

*I've added a link to Memories in the menu. If you wish to either delete, or change the link name for this, here's what you need to put in your theme layer:

It's this section that needs to be changed {or removed}:
"""<li><a href="$*SITEROOT/tools/memories.bml?user=$.journal.username">Memories</a></li>""";

Note, that you can also add in menu links if you want. Just make sure they follow this guidline:

"""<li><a href="LINK URL">LINK TEXT</a></li>""";
