Last night her parents had gone out for dinner and Molly had spent the night lounging on the couch in front of the TV trading texts with Jubilee who was getting increasingly more hilarious and obviously drunk. It had been early when she had eventually peeled herself away from the end credits of her third movie and shuffled up the stairs to bed. In the morning they still weren’t back. Molly didn’t bother to call them until about midday but it went straight to voicemail and she assumed some sort of medical emergency had come up, maybe they’d come and gone while she’d been asleep that morning. That had happened before. So instead of worrying about it she went out for the afternoon, only coming home as the sun was slipping behind the horizon, darkness creeping over Malibu. When she walked up the drive she felt unease bubbling in the pit of her stomach; the car was still gone and the lights were all out in the house.

Curiosity now giving way to worry she unlocked the front door and went in, calling for her parents only to be met with silence. Suddenly she felt tight as a drum, wound up by the static crackle of stillness in the house pressing in on her from all sides. Swallowing on a chink in her throat she crept into her parents’ bedroom, calling after them softer now. What struck her first was the fact that her mother’s dresser drawers were open, but casting her eyes around she soon discovered that the wardrobe was standing open as well. There were clothes crumpled on the floor and empty hangers above them. Molly wasn’t stupid; she could put two and two together and come out with four. The dark house, the missing clothes, her parents were gone, and they hadn’t been kidnapped or otherwise forced either, they were just gone. Fighting tears of anger and confusion, Molly backed out of the room and went downstairs again. Maybe there was a note somewhere, some kind of explanation as to why her parents had packed up and left and done so without her, some last minute medical conference, some family emergency. As much as she disagreed with their general philosophies when it came to humans and mutants, they were still her parents, and Molly was still a child and she loved her mother and father.

There was nothing on the kitchen counter or by the phone where they used to leave messages, none of the lights would turn on and the clock on the microwave was dead. Something felt really wrong. Molly pulled out her handheld, biting her bottom lip in worry as her thumbs whizzed over the keys. )

In the end the only thing to do had been to shove her in the powers room and let the ectoplasm run its course. Jubilee, Cecilia and Logan had tracked her down once she’d made a run for it out of the hotel and managed to subdue her enough to get her back safely, not surprising really given their mutations and teamwork. Thankfully the room could take a fair amount of punishment, probably more than Momo was capable of dealing really and after more than a day of being locked in that room for her own safety as much as anyone else’s, trying to blast her way out in that detached, spooky way the energies that had usurped the control she had over her own body were finally exhausted. Momo sagged into a heap and promptly crawled into the corner to sleep without allowing thoughts to coagulate or memories to solidify.

Sometime later –- the time of day being pretty much impossible to determine in there and her watch being broken -- she woke up; aching, hungry and in a daze she made her way to the door. When she banged her small palms on it and hoarsely announced that she was ready to come out now in her usual voice whoever was out thee opened it up for her and she all but tumbled out, waving off any queries as to her health.

Yes, she was fine. No, she didn’t want to talk about it. Thank you, but she just wanted to lock herself in her room for a while.

That being exactly what she did. Momo didn’t know how she felt about what had happened yet, she wasn’t even sure that she knew with one hundred percent certainty what had happened, and maybe she would when her thoughts sorted themselves out and maybe she wouldn’t. All she knew was that she was sore and tired and dirty and she wanted to clean up and then hide.

The hotel may be secure, but its residents' minds were not.

The passcode to get in had been plucked from the mind of an overactive teenager on their way to the hotel after school. When they made their way into the hotel after the majority of the residents and that night's guests had retired, illusion cloaked their entry. The residents that were awake felt the sudden need to sleep and if they were lucky, they got to the mattress before they fell unconscious.

With the young mutants in the hotel at their mercy, the sisters Wyngarde did a brief telepathic sweep of the grounds, making sure no one had been immune to their wiles and remained awake. Jason Wyngarde and Manuel de la Rocha followed before the four toured the hotel, setting up their operations in the abandoned penthouse on the top floor.

Logan had said his part. Local authority on the pool psychopaths or not, the fact that he hadn't spoken up until after the fact meant that Warren's mind was set -- and Jean's too, apparently, a fact that had set him back on edge. He hated this. Babysitting his younger brother and the tag-along friend was not his idea of a good time, and even when the fighting got a little rough and he felt his blood rising with the not entirely unpleasant knowledge that he didn't have to hold back when fighting Vic, he still knew there were plenty of other things (or people) he'd rather be doing. Having to play devil's advocate for the sake of someone he didn't even like hammered the whole fucking point home. It was a waste of his time and energy to keep trying, and he was through with it. Besides, Jean's words had made something of an impact, despite the fact that his initial reaction had been anger. He hadn't had a back-up plan. For all they could tell, Logan was expecting to spend the rest of his unnatural lifespan sitting at that damn poolside, making sure that Vic was under control for the rest of Vic's unnatural lifespan too. Which...was definitely not going to be the case. Logan needed to think ahead. Get around the obstacle that Warren had presented him with and be innovative.

So Logan had found himself a shovel.

His plan wasn't to bury Vic or Sarah alive, though the option was starting to feel tempting. He'd gone out back to the shelter that Warren had put up -- the one that the duo had rejected -- and took a good look around. Anywhere there would've been fine, so after a few moments, Logan picked a spot and sunk his shovel into the dirt. They needed a place to live, without walls? He was going to make them one. Nothing fancy. Just a pit in the ground, big enough for them to move around, curl up at night, and have their little death matches whenever the urge hit them. When he was done, he was going to take down the shelter and use the wood to build a fence around it. It would keep the swimmers out and grant the pair a certain amount of privacy, which he felt pretty sure they didn't give a shit about but would claim as being vital anyway once they had it. Maybe he could find another tarp to throw over the top and protect them from the rain. Not that he cared. Hell, they could get rained on all day and night, if Santa Monica's skies ever opened up. If it would shut up the protesters clamoring about how badly he mistreated them by downgrading from the pool to a hole in the ground, though, he would do it. Anything to get this mess over with.

Santa Monica, California -- Late Wednesday Night
"What do you mean they're gone," John Sublime's voice boomed through the basement as he towered over the cowering surgeon.

The church had been left unmanned earlier in the evening while Sublime accompanied some of his followers to a pro-mutant demonstration downtown. In his absence, their donors had gotten out. More like broken out, given the evidence that force was used in their escape.

Then the surgeon started babbling on about the power nullifier being dismantled and Sublime lost it. He struck the surgeon hard, causing him to crash against the crude operating table. The surgeon's head struck the corner of the table, his body falling lifelessly to the floor.

Sublime seethed silently for a second, his fists clenching and unclenching as he stood over the surgeon's unmoving body. This was an unfortunate setback -- another setback. This was almost worse than the shut down in New York, because he had been so close. He had worked so hard to get to this -- gained willing members of his church to be the recipients of experiment, captured enough mutants to conduct trials, built this basement with his own money to see his science come to fruition.

John Sublime was pissed.

He stormed up the steps and back onto the main floor, intent on heading to his office to make some calls to his East Coast contacts. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw someone quietly standing in the middle of his sanctuary. His face changed suddenly, adopting a more calm and welcoming composure which appeared strained.

Excuse me -- can I help you? )

[Fox News]

Across the bottom of the screen, in bold white letters above the scrolling news labeled the segment 'MUTANT TERROR AT UCLA'. A brunette woman sat in the chair at a desk, looking up at the camera on her cue. "Now in California: It seems all anyone can talk about is the apparent mutant attack that occurred on UCLA campus on Thursday. Around 1pm, reports of a mutant "

As the broadcaster continued to speak, footage courtesy of YouTube is shown -- muted from any audio accompanying the footage. "What you are seeing is amateur footage of the incident -- a college-aged young woman, apparently on fire is ripping through a section of campus and the neighboring establishments. Now watch closely -- you will see presumably two mutants, a male and female, try to intercept the female. To discuss this incident further, I'd like to welcome our mutant correspondent. Now, Tim, you've been monitoring the situation in Los Angeles. Have there been any arrests?"

"As of yet, no. We're still looking into the identities and ability set of the mutants involved, but there have been no leads. Reports indicate they left the scene before police arrived."

"Mutants are a hot topic right now -- we've seen stories about heroic rescues and debates. How do you think this will affect mutant-relations dialogue?"

"I do think it's important to note that two of the mutants went against the other -- either they knew her or they simply wanted to stop her. I cannot say what effect this will have on mutant-human dialogue."

"Do you think these mutants are UCLA students?"

"That is a strong possibility -- as the attack occurred on campus, at approximately lunch time. However, it's a very popular area so we cannot know for sure. They may have just been locals."

The broadcaster nodded as a map displaying the UCLA campus is shown on the screen, highlighting the area that was destroyed. "While it's not a large portion of campus, it is a densely populated one. As I understand it, all injured are in stable condition at area hospitals?"

"That is correct."

"Commencement is in two weeks -- will this affect any of the ceremonies?"

"Somewhat -- the events scheduled to take place in or around the destroyed area will be relocated and the administration are working toward easing parents' fears about arriving on campus for the ceremonies. It's expected they will come out with a statement early next week."

"Thank you, Tim." The broadcaster forced a polite smile before turning to the camera. "We will get you more on the terror at UCLA as the situation develops."

Finding UCLA had been a surreal sort of experience. Society dictated that college was the option Rogue should have been seriously thinking about by now – and maybe she might have given it some thought once upon a time, had her mutation never manifested two years ago. It was like entering another world – a world she was supposed to belong to – seeing people even a mere year older than she was pouring over books or last-minute notes as they rushed to class. Rogue had brushed aside a strand of white and hitched her handbag over her shoulder somewhat uncomfortably as her iPod blared whatever was next in the playlist. This wasn’t a place for her. She was just here to find Jean and drag her off to catch up on whatever they felt like catching up on.

What she wasn't here for was watching one of Los Angeles' premiere universities burn to the ground. )

Logan really didn't have time for this anymore. His responsibilities to the hotel, particularly now that he'd brought a certain dangerous individual to live shoulder-to-shoulder with the other kids, took up most of his waking hours and all of his free time; as good as he'd been so far about sticking around to do his part, there were certain things he couldn't give up entirely. Jean. He couldn't go on and just wander into her room to spend some time with her anymore, not after the last horrible encounter they'd had on the stairwell. He couldn't apologize for confronting her: he meant every word that he'd said and his pride wouldn't allow him to back down first. If she didn't want to spend time with him either, fine. He had no reason to go out of his way to make it easier on her...except, of course, that he couldn't give her up entirely, either. The longer that he ignored her presence at the hotel, the stronger the pull to be near her grew, until he knew sooner or later he'd have to find a way to get back in her good graces.

What he didn't have time for was stalking Jean to the UCLA campus in the hours when he was supposed to be taking a much-needed sleep break from guard duty, and yet. Here he was. Falling back on old habits to feel close to her, even from a distance.

He didn't see what had gone wrong. )

summary: Jean and Logan haven't been seeing all that much of each other recently, so when they run into each other on the stairs, Logan takes the opportunity to jealously confront her about avoiding him. All the tension finally blows up in their faces and ends in a rather spectacular emotional explosion (that poor Ric unwittingly witnesses).

He seemed quite at home just laying all his bad feelings out there to disarm her and for a brief moment, she hated him for it. He got under her skin and he was right about her being unable to control him... )
