Who: Jess and Adam
What: Eating doughnuts
Where: Doughnut shop
When: Wednesday, early evening
Warnings: None
At three o’clock, he packed up his laptop and briefcase and left. His secretary looked like she wanted to yell at him as he hobbled out, but no one picked on a cripple. So maybe he was deliberately making his hobble more noticeable, but his foot still throbbed. Refusing to take painkillers was less about being noble and more about being sober. One couldn’t work when his head was detached from his body and floating around the clouds, and he certainly needed to work. Work was predictable, it made sense. It had nothing to do with masquerades and pretty women adorned in jewels.
Rubbing his temples, he collapsed into his car, grateful that his left foot was the damaged one and not his right. His cell phone rang, repeatedly, as he drove away from the office. It was one of the partners, demanding to know where he was going. Adam wondered when the man would realize he couldn’t do a thing to control him. Sure, the man could threaten to fire Adam, but he wouldn’t because Adam was simply too valuable an asset to the company. So Adam got away with murder. Literally in some cases.
He returned to the Bathos, changing and lounging around the house. He checked the bandages on his foot and changed them. At four-thirty, he left for the doughnut shop where he was meeting Jess. He was early again, thankfully, and he eased into a booth in easy sight after purchasing a glass of orange juice. He’d get a doughnut later only if it was absolutely necessary; he preferred salty things to sweets but would eat sweets to be social and polite. In his back pocket, his cell phone rang again, and he ignored it again.
