KIDNAPPING CASE DISMISSED [Photo of Charlie Knight leaving the courthouse with his lawyer.] The case against 35-year-old Charles Knight was dropped today after a judge dismissed the charges on grounds of insufficient evidence as well as suspicions of misconduct during Mr. Knight's arrest and detainment. Mr. Knight was accused of kidnapping and torturing a young girl over a period of days before his capture. Few details were given, but sources say that evidence of mask involvement and violations of the defendant's rights while in custody were key to the case's dismissal. Mr. Knight's attorney was satisfied with Judge Anderson's ruling, stating "We are very pleased [with today's decision]." The DA's office was similarly reluctant to elaborate, only commenting that they were disappointed with the ruling. Mr. Knight himself, however, had no qualms about talking to reporters after his case was dropped. "I was a scapegoat for the masks and the police went along with it," he said. "These charges were a cover so they could accuse me of being some kind of dream killer. I couldn't believe it. I was violently attacked and the man responsible is still out there because vigilante justice has become acceptable." When asked what he planned to do next, Mr. Knight simply stated "I just want to put this behind me and move on." Police declined to comment on Mr. Knight's accusations. |
