Do you believe in God?
Muse/Fandom: Arden/G:tSE
Prompt: #3. Do you believe in God?
Word Count: 374
Open to roleplay: Sure, here.
Three years ago, I didn't believe in life after death. I understand and accept that the First Law of Thermodynamics (you know, energy can be transformed but it can't be created or destroyed) means that our energy continues on after death in some form or another, but survival of the human consciousness as we understand it? Survival of personality, or any of the things that make us who we are? I didn't buy it. I'm a modern, educated woman; I thought that ghosts and life after death—whether it be Heaven, Hell, purgatory or just a parallel plane of existence—were fairy tales for adults, stories that people made up to avoid existential crisis. My dad fought really hard to shape my thinking along those lines, but that's another story for another time. In the middle of my freshman year at college, my life took a hard left turn. Who gets bacterial blood infections anymore? Me, apparently. I died alone, in my dorm room, before I even knew I was sick. I don't think anyone can blame me for coming back, whatever the cost. I've been to the place where the hungry dead linger. I talk to ghosts every day. All I want to do is live the remainder of my life to its fullest, but I can't go anywhere without sensing the psychic stains left behind by anyone who has ever died there. Imagine trying to have an intimate moment with your lover while the ghost of the old lady who used to live in your apartment watches. My point? Belief is irrelevant. The things you don't believe in sometimes have a way of making themselves known to you, and when they do, it's going to turn your world upside down. Three years ago, I didn't believe in life after death and now I can't get away from the dead. I shudder to think what would happen if God decided to take me to task for my disbelief. What I will say is this: after three years of communicating with the dead, I haven't seen a single sign that the Big Bully in the Sky is out there somewhere, but I have seen a couple of pretenders. If God does exist, he isn't paying attention. |
