Varada: Personality and plot, pt 1 PERSONALITY AND PLOT Personality: Varada’s personality has undergone a major evolution in the three years he’s been in Kailas’ care. Originally, the boy was extremely flat, and practically a mute. He only spoke when he was spoken to, and showed little emotion or interest in his surroundings. This was both the way he coped with his own fears and anxieties, and also a result of his upbringing in the Huistonian laboratories. After all, prior to meeting Kailas, Varada had little experience with the “normal” population.
Varada’s true personality is much more personable. He’s an extremely warm-hearted and friendly person. He feels very deeply for others, although he has a hard time voicing this. He cherishes life very deeply, and this is seen in how he not only takes care of Kailas, cooking and cleaning for him diligently, but how he takes care of the garden and animals outside.
Perhaps because his life experiences were so limited, Varada shows an innate curiosity and interest in the world around him. He sucks in knowledge like a sponge. After acquiring his glasses, Varada quickly read through most of the books in Kailas’ home. Kailas later showed Varada how to properly use the internet, and from there Varada began to browse the references, guides and encyclopedias available to him online. Varada also spends a significant amount of time wandering the grounds outside their home, exploring nature and all it holds.
He’s still very hesitant and timid, even skittish at times. A sour face or pointed glance can get him scurrying into hiding. He doesn’t like large groups of people, and is wary of strangers. There are some exceptions to this rule, however.
Background: Much like Kailas before him, Varada was bred through the Huistionian biological weapons program. His making is the result of a captive demon woman being forced to breed with a Huistonian man of “fine” genetics. As a fetus he was then altered in utero with a variety of drugs and supplements. Upon being born, Varada was promptly removed from his mother and put into the care of the oh-so-talented Huistonian scientists.
Yet, unlike his elder brother, Varada’s upbringing was not so smooth. While his abilities manifested while he was young, they were hard for both Varada himself and the scientists in charge of him to make sense of. All that was clear was that Varada was exceptionally sensitive to energy; he could perceive the energy of those around him, and the energy of the elements. In fact, he was too sensitive; he could hardly stand to be around more than 3 people at a time.
As a result of this, Varada underwent further experimentation and alteration to “correct” these problems. He was also subjected to exposure therapy that drove him to recede even further. In the end, Varada ended up spending much of his youth alone inside the confinements of the Huistonian laboratories.
