The Café

The café is on a quiet street just on the fringes of "downtown", away from the major hustle and bustle but near enough to be convenient. There are doors all along the street, opening to florists and jewellers, to bakeries and delicatessens, to restaurants and bars. And, at the very end of the street, to the café itself. There's a patio out front with little white plastic tables under sundrenched gold canopies and surrounded by a low, wrought-iron fence trailed by white and gold flowers. Those same flowers trail along the mahogany woodwork of the doorframe and door.

Inside, the place is elegant, all golds and browns, richly-stained wood tables and warm inviting hardwood floor. The entrance is on the right side of the room so that when you step in, your eyes are drawn immediately left to see the counter with its various coffees and flavorings, and the cakes that are also served. There's a kitchen behind it, tucked unobtrusively behind a wall so that the noise and frantic pace don't interrupt the soothing calm of the café itself. Tables and booths litter the floor, and soft music plays in the background, just soft enough to be enjoyed without drawing attention. There is a spiral staircase in the right corner, wrought-iron like the fence outside, and it leads up to a half-floor above, the loft set up with a small stage for performers and open but for more wrought-iron railing, looking down on the main room below. Not far from that staircase, tucked behind an outjut of wall, leads another, plain staircase down. It is one of two, both going to the basement below, but this staircase is open to the public, leading to restroom facilities that are plain and nondescript, but kept clean at all times. There is no other door below on this side. The other entrance is by the kitchen entrance, and leads to the storage and staff bathrooms.

The staff are friendly and open, and there are rarely more than one or two servers at any given time. They wear shirts of gold or brown, with khaki slacks and a deep chocolate apron. And while the servers are young, the man behind the counter is not. He is not old so much as adult, with a grin in his eye and a goatee that makes him look just a little older. There are faint traces of grey in his hair, and unlike the others, he wears black and white, a white shirt with black slacks and a black apron.

"Welcome to our café," he says.
