Hands clutching the laser rifle to his chest, Vin stared hard at the back of Kyle's head. The other man was deliberately not payin' him any attention. He opened his mouth to say something, but found himself unable to find the words. Every time he tried ended the same way.
They should have been talking about it. It was a big decision to make. There were so many lives at stake, it would effect everyone. Yet, it was them two that it would effect the most. Vin knew they had to say something, even if it was screams. Still, there was only silence.
While he watched, Kyle went about sifting through his rucksack. They both knew it was just an excuse to avoid eye contact. Nothin' in there was of any real importance. At least, not any more.
He had made his decision already.
Realizing that staggered Vin backwards. He came to a stop against the cement wall. His legs trembled, threatening to give out.
It was true, Kyle was really going through with it. He was going to accept the mission and leave them all behind. Kyle was going to leave him behind.
The thought of being here alone sucked the air from his lungs. His entire body shook. Lowering his gaze to the floor, he inhaled slowly through his nose. It hurt to try and breathe. Apparently there was no them to discuss. He had been a delusional idiot all along. That was what you called someone who saw things that weren't there, he recalled.
Numb with shock, he pushed off the wall. Vin wasn't sure how he managed to stay on his feet as he turned and headed for the door. He kept up a slow pace, just in case. By the time he crossed the threshold, he felt as if a lead weight tied to his chest had sunk to his knees. Outside the room, he paused to give Kyle another chance.
After a full minute, he gasped softly and continued on. There was no point in waiting around any longer. He didn't like pain.
Shoulders slumped, he moved off through the base, away from the others. In a few hours, Kyle would be physically gone too. He wanted to be alone when that happened. This way, the others wouldn't have to fry him when he went after Connor. Vin knew for certain, if he saw the man again, he would do what no metal head had been able to do since Judgment Day.
As he walked, he wondered why it had to end this way. He had thought they were good together. It wasn't love, that was only a fairy tale for children like candy and sunlight. They had shared a bunk and that was it. But, in this place, you took what you could get and made do. Vin used the heel of his palm to rub at his eyes, but the filthy glove only made them sting more.
That didn't matter anymore. Nothing did. He should have known better when he started it. It always happened to him in the end. He was stupid to have even tried. What was the point of fighting the inevitable?
He staggered to a stop at the end of another tunnel. So lost in his thoughts, he didn't even bother to try and find out where he was. Vin leaned back against the crumbling brick wall. A gaping, disorienting feeling tugged at his thoughts until he slipped to the ground to keep from falling.
What was he going to do now?
No answer to that question came to him. Eyes wide, he stared at the floor in front of him. He was barely aware that he was rocking until a pair of boots came marching up to him in a dizzying cadence. Light headed, he looked up to see who had found him.
Scar under one eye, it marred the man's entire cheek. Another one cut into his upper lip and trailed off over his chin in small scratches. Hard blue eyes stared down at him without remorse.
"What d'you want?" Vin was surprised he had the strength to speak, let alone form a coherent sentence.
Hands on his hips, the man was obviously disgusted by what he found. "Man up. You've got another missi..." He fell back a step with a surprised expression on his face. Hands held high, he took another step backwards.
Vin snorted. A laser rifle pointed dead center at someone's forehead was a good motivator. Holding his weapon steady, he watched until the man had gone back around the corner. He heard the boots slap the paving stones as he stormed off, probably to get someone else to deal with him. He snorted again. Apparently he had been all talk and no action, just like ole blue eyes.
That bastard was good at getting other people to do his dirty work. All he had to do was offer an inspiring speech and stare at them and they fell under his spell. Vin need look no further than his own... No. He wasn't Vin's Kyle anymore, never had been.
Nose burning, he lowered the weapon to his lap. For a minute, he had forgotten. He drew his knees up to his chest. Crossing his arms over his chest, he closed his eyes and gently laid his cheek to rest on them. Maybe if he ignored it, he could drift off to dreams about fairy tales of candy and sunlight.
