There was silence among the conclave. The tension that had been building since Julian confronted Cameron sat simmering beneath the surface. It wasn't going to be so easily dismissed no matter the pleasantries. That much was certain to all of them.
For his part, Sonny tried to keep his stoic silence. His position at the table tonight was tenuous at best. That was one thing he shared in common with the new Brujah primogen. Hopefully, it would be the last thing too. Yet, he wasn't the most dangerous part of this equation tonight.
Maintaining a blank facade, he looked to his right at Lillie. The Toreador primogen was watching Julian, like she always did. There was none of her usual hunger, though. He realized that what they had may have finally been over.
That put the dynamic of the conclave up in the air. She had always been a little flighty in his opinion. Lillie had been too quick to do business with the Brujah. Her little stunt with Fiori only proved that. With the recent events, she would be more willing to side with the Brujah now. Her loyalty was now even more suspect and was a possible threat.
As if sensing his thoughts, she cast him a quick glance. Lillie quickly looked away.
It was enough that he knew that she was having similar thoughts about him. He needed a way to prove where she now placed herself. Knowing would give him an advantage. A solution presented itself in his mind almost before he realized what he was grasping for. Though, there was a risk of exposing more than just loyalties, the situation was not one that could be allowed to continue any longer.
He considered it for a moment while he studied the others. A quick look around the table easily made up his mind. This was too important. Sitting up a little straighter, he pushed in closer to the table. "I have relevant news to report on a certain situation."
That drew their attention and all eyes were upon him. Sonny felt his sire's attention almost like a physical presence. It was almost enough to silence him, yet this was too important.
Keeping his head high and back straight, he watched Lillie and Cameron with undisguised question. "Frank Kohanek knows who I am. More specifically, he knows what I am."
"This is not a situation we should be discussing here." Julian tried to intervene, his tone warning. "Frank is under my protection, thus matters concerning him are private."
Sonny knew he could not keep quiet. A large part of why this situation had continued was based upon his anonymity. Thankfully, he was saved from having to contradict the man.
"With all due respect, my Prince, it is not. This is a dangerous situation." Daedalus folded his hands in front of him. Turning them over, he exposed his palms. "While we have tolerated his presence and knowledge of our existence out of deference to you in the past, circumstances have changed."
Watching the Nosferatu gave Sonny a sense of relief. He hadn't just made the biggest mistake in his unlife.
"I agree." Laser eyes focused on the table, Lillie seemed unable to look up. Her jaw set as she leaned back in her chair. "It's time for him to choose."
That was not out of character for her. He knew she would be pragmatic about it. Sonny needed more from her. "You know that he won't make that choice. He has stated as such on more than one occasion." While he was focused on her, he kept an eye on Cameron as well.
Even though she met his gaze for a moment, Lillie remained silent.
It was Cameron who broke the quiet. "Then he will die."
'He probably couldn't have sounded more smug if he had tried,' Sonny thought. The Brujah was quickly getting on his nerves. He needed a definite answer from Lillie one way or the other.
Julian chose that moment to step in. Leaning forward, he put a clenched fist on the table. He met each one of their gazes before he spoke. "Need I remind you that I am still your prince?" He spoke each word with an almost snarl. "The fate of Detective Kohanek is my decision and mine alone!"
"Then I beg your permission. Let me embrace him." This came from the final member of their conclave. Having broken his silence, Cash pushed forward in his chair. He leaned partially over the table to get Julian's attention. "Gangrel have not increased our number in months, though we have lost several." He finished with a murderous look at Cameron.
There was obviously no love loss between the new primogen. Sonny would have to have been blind not to see the enmity. He was glad of it. At least there was one line he could rely upon.
For his part, Julian appeared to have held his anger in check long enough to consider it. Deep in thought, he breathed through his nose in long, steady breaths.
That was rarely a good sign. Over the years, Sonny had come to rely upon his instincts. They were telling him now that he wasn't going to like the next few days no matter what the decision his sire made.

His phone was ringing when he stepped off the elevator. Even from there he could hear it through the thin walls. Not for the first time Frank was grateful he rarely had company over. And for those times when he did, they weren't the exceedingly vocal type.
Putting on a little extra speed, he reached his apartment after the second ring he heard. Bracing his bag of groceries against the jam, he unlocked the door with one hand. He pushed it open to the third ring. "I'm coming!"
The phone sounded loud and urgent, like the person on the other end was desperate to reach him. He knew this was all in his head. Still, it gave him a little extra incentive to rush over. Leaving the door open, he quickly moved to the end table. He picked up the phone with a quick inhalation. "Kohanek."
"Julian has called a hunt for your blood."
Frank felt his heart seize at the familiar modulated voice.
"Clans Gangrel and Ventrue have asked and been given permission to embrace you, by force if need be. The Brujah will no doubt take this opportunity to flaunt his decision and their disregard of the rules. You have been warned." The line went dead after the final word.
The paper sack fell from his hand. Frank stood there in shock, staring off into space. Had he just heard what he thought he did? The dial tone snapped him into action.
Racing to the back of his apartment, Frank headed for his closet. He needed to get the hell out of the city tonight. There were a few accessories necessary he had to get before he went, though. Chief among those was the phosphorous gun from his closet.
