The heat of the day made the world seem hazy. What few people were about lazed in chairs or whatever was handy. Flies buzzed about lazily overhead. Even they seemed muted in their usual enthusiasm by the temperature.
Walking out of the saloon, Chris stood on the edge of the porch and wavered there. His own skin was damp to the touch. Unlike the others, the heat had nothing to do with it.
The scorching sunlight gave the world an unearthly glow. For several moments he doubted any of it was real. He was almost certain of that, because it couldn't be.
Two days. He had been dead for two days. This he knew for fact as he had seen his own corpse back in that stinking prison. They had burned him along with several other people, some he wasn't sure were quite dead yet. How he had known that was something he didn't care to think about.
A fine tremor ran through him.
Chris looked out over the town. The streets remained untouched. Buildings still sat their usual locations. Trees still grew on the fringe. Hell, even the animals looked pretty much the same. It had never felt so different and empty.
He almost started off from the porch, but hesitated. It took him several seconds to realize there was really no place he wanted to go.
