Part 1: "The whispers started way back further than I can remember."
Leaves swept through his hair as the wind kicked up. Keeping his eyes closed, he could hear them crackling all around him. The entire hollow echoed back at him, seeming to come alive. In the distance, he swore, he heard the tinkling of tiny bells.
Opening his eyes as the wind died down, Chuck saw that he stood in the center of an ancient grove of trees. Their black bark stood out in the dying sunlight. Fallen leaves of red and yellow littered the ground. Some, still green, clung to their inner-most branches.
He was looking up to the sky when he heard them. Soft at first, then all around him. They sounded like little kids. Their words were indecipherable, yet, he knew some how that they wanted him to come play with them.
They wanted to take him with them. Away from the pain.
Frowning, he looked around him, trying to catch a glimpse of them. "What pain?" His eleven year-old voice echoed was barely a whisper on the wind.
"What pain," the voices echoed back at him. This time it was accompanied by a childish giggle.
A nervous shiver ran through Chuck. He suddenly no longer wanted to be here. Lowering his gaze to the ground, he tried to locate the path he had taken to come here. There was no visible changes in the ground. All around him littered mosses and ferns. Ancient rocks jutted out from the hillside like sores.
Swallowing, he took a step back. He was lost.
Then it started. High pitched and breaking, her mournful song drifted to him from the trees. It rose and dropped with the swell of the wind. She wanted him to sleep.
He tried to fight it, shaking his head no. Despite his defiance his eye lids started to droop. That was when he realized it was useless.
She knew the right words to sooth him to sleep. 'Everything would be all right' her song told him. All he had to do was lay down and close his eyes.
Sleep.
He was so tired. Yawning, Chuck put a hand to his mouth to stifle himself. He moaned softly and drifted back. Putting out a hand, he met a tree, then guided himself down to sit at its trunk. Closing his eyes, he lowered his chin and nodded off.
~~~~~~~~~
"What the hell do you think you are doing?"
Jerking awake, Chuck's eyes popped open. He looked to the source of the voice and found his sister.
A man held her arm, glaring at her. "Trying to steal my wallet, you little bitch?"
The other patrons of the bus stop just stood there and watched. Most of them appeared bored by the whole thing.
Tears in her eyes, Ellie winced at his grip. "Please, I only bumped in..."
"Liar!" He gave her a strong shake. "You think I don't know a thief when I see one?"
Pushing off the stone bench, Chuck felt his shaky legs try to give out. That meant he had been sleeping on it for a good thirty minutes. Their bus would coming soon. But that wasn't important. Clenching his fists, Chuck started towards the mean jerk!
By now, Ellie face was bright red. Tears stained her cheeks as she tried to plead with the man. "Please, it was just an accident."
"I'll show you just an accident!" Drawing his hand back, the man jerked her in to position to hit her across the face.
"Leave my sister alone!" Having snuck up to them, Chuck swung his fist with all his might. He hit right at shoulder level to him.
The punch struck the man directly in the zipper. Eyes popping, the man made a strangled sound. He instantly released Ellie.
"She is not a liar, nor a thief!" Glaring at the big jerk, Chuck held up his fists. "You tell her you're sorry!" He was prepared to take the moron on!
"Chuck!" Ellie's gasp of surprise was quickly followed by a pained grunt. Clutching her bruised arm to her chest, she grabbed her brother by the back of his shirt. "Let's get the hell out of here!" A quick look about told her no body was going to stop them.
"I can't, Ellie, not until he apologizes." Chuck tried to resist her pull, but she jerked him off balance. He had to stagger to keep his feet. By then, he was already being pulled along at a full run. As he turned to glare at his sister, he saw her holding something small and brown against her chest.
It was the man's wallet.
Part 2: "At night I used to imagine the lights I saw were actually fairies."
It wasn't until two weeks after the event that Chuck realized why it had happened at all. No one spoke of it, which was why it took so long. They didn't blame each other. There was plenty of that to go around, but all of it was laid at one person's feet.
Too bad she wasn't there to hear about it any more.
It's not like it was a big surprise. She had never shown up at any of the important events in their life. Heck, Chuck had assumed Ellie was his mom for most of his childhood. She did everything for him their real one wouldn't So when the original split, nothing pretty much changed.
Picking at his runny eggs, Chuck tried to find them appetizing. He didn't like much of anything lately. That wasn't surprising. The food he got served barely qualified for it.
Not that he blamed Ellie. She did her best. She always did her best for them both.
Today, it's just, she wasn't there.
Twisting the fork in the gelatinous mess, he turned them over. He didn't like them. There was no cheese in them like she made. Like he would actually say that out loud.
Across the table, Stephen watched Chuck with a frown. His own toast was burnt as he smothered it in jelly. "Quit playing with your blessed food and eat it."
Shrinking back, Chuck lowered his fork. He dropped his chin again and stared at the eggs. They were really gross. "When will Ellie come back?"
"Two weeks, if it's His will, just like the last time you asked." Putting down his knife, Stephen grabbed his paper. His eyes began to scan the sports section and he took a bite out of the toast.
He really missed his sister. If their mom hadn't left, Ellie wouldn't have gotten in trouble. If Ellie hadn't gotten in trouble, she would have made them breakfast. She knew how he liked his eggs.
Everything that went wrong was their mother's fault. He was glad she was gone. She was bitch anyways!
Part 3: "Halloween was my favorite holiday, my dreams became real then."
"What are you supposed to be?" Twirling his scepter, Chuck eyed his sister's boyfriend with a little trepidation. At least he and Morgan were easily recognizable with their royal garb.
Hoisting up his painted mallet, the jock narrowed his eyes at the other teen. "I'm Thor, son of Oden!" He took a menacing step towards Chuck. "Who art thou?"
"Thou?" Snorting, Chuck curled his mouth to the right. "Thor was a Norse god, he didn't speak old English."
Wielding the mallet above his head, the teen's glare intensified. "Dude, if you're brother is going to geek out on us, I'm not going." Turning to Ellie, he had to face her completely because of his helmet.
Sighing, Ellie rolled her eyes heavenwards. "Chuck." Her long suffering tone nagged at her little brother's brain. "It took all I had just to get dad to agree to let us go to the dance. You know how he is about these 'pagan holidays'." She emphasized the last two words with air quotes.
Deflating, Chuck let his scepter drop to his side. "You really know how to ruin the mood." He pushed the crown further up his head. Picking up his candy sack, Chuck turned to Morgan. "Come on, let's leave these two alone."
Facing peering out from under his headdress, Morgan smiled at Ellie. Then he was sent scrambling when his fake beard nearly slipped off from the action.
"Come, Osiris!" Raising his scepter high, Lord Ptah marched forward in to the streets. "We have candy to collect!"
Part 4: "The tragedy is how much a relief it finally was."
Sitting at the kitchen table, Chuck studied the transcripts of his past year. He had enough credits to graduate early if he wanted to. That was something he hadn't counted on. For the past six months it had been a constant struggle to even maintain his grade-point average.
This, this was certainly unexpected.
Humming to himself, he allowed himself to imagine what it would be like. He could go to college and finally study what he wanted to. Most of the courses he needed weren't offered in any high school. Forget that, they weren't offered in most colleges either.
This was his chance. He could finally move on with his life if he wanted to. Certainly, it was early to begin looking in to colleges, or a little late if he thought about it. The semester was almost over and college applications for next year had already been accepted or rejected.
There had been a big brujahjah over it in the Senior Lounge two months ago. He remembered because he had been 'serving' drinks. Technically, he had been forced to play the part of waiter. But the tips he had gotten saved himself a few times. Like when he learned to keep his mouth shut over drinking age minimums, that had been a valuable tip.
But back to colleges! He had his choice of places he could apply to. There were so many great colleges out there, but he had his heart set on one in particular. It boasted everything he was looking for in a college. From their ancient library to the courses on theological comparative studies.
Stygian University. Now there was real Greek.
He was so caught up in his fantasies he didn't hear the car pull up outside. The doors slamming shut did it for him, though.
Startled, he looked over to the kitchen door.
A familiar shadow appeared at the blinds before it was thrown open. There stood his sister in all her proud glory.
He started to smile until he caught the look on Ellie's face. Frowning, he stood up. "What's wrong? Did something happen at college?"
Lips quivering, she took in his appearance. From his properly slicked back hair to the school uniform, she found nothing out of place. "Are you all right, Chuck?"
"Yeah, never better." This time he did smile. It was more out of trying to reassure her, though. "Why?"
Instead of answering, she started walking slowly in to the kitchen. She glanced about the house, being able to see most of it from the dining room. "Chuck, when was the last time you saw Dad?"
Chuck opened his mouth to answer, then hesitated. Raising an eyebrow, he frowned. "I dunno, a few days. He works nights." He glanced back at their father's bedroom. "Again, why?"
Turning to face him, she had tears in her eyes. They smeared her mascara.
'It definitely wasn't a good look on her,' he thought. Before he knew it, he was wrapped up in a big hug. She was so strong it nearly strangled the breath from his lanky body. "Okay, Ellie, you're starting to scare me here."
"You big dope!" Burying her face in his hair, she sniffed a couple times. "Morgan called me, Chuck, I know."
He tensed up. "You know what?"
"Two months," she drew back to kiss his forehead, "he's been gone for two months."
She could have knocked him over with a feather. Glancing back over his shoulder, he looked at their father's bedroom. "What?"
Part 5: "Acceptance was never easy even when I fit in."
To say he was feeling comfortably numb was an understatement. Chuck never drank. Even when he felt the urge, it never happened. He liked his mental faculties right where they were, thank you very much.
Besides, most normal college drinking was done with friends in a social setting, like a party. Since he had none of those, he was pretty much exempt the evils of alcohol.
Well, that was, until he met Bryce Larkin.
Giggling uncontrollably, Chuck peered about them with watery eyes. He couldn't exactly recall the trip to wherever here was. That had all been Bryce's doing. He was examining some strange markings on the walls when he heard a small motor start up. Leaning against Bryce for support, Chuck frowned at his friend. "Where are we again?"
Grin a mile wide, Bryce slipped a hand down to Chuck's hip. "Never fear, Chuck, I've got everything under control."
"Okay, now I know you're up to something." Licking his lips, Chuck clicked his tongue. It felt thick and dry, much too heavy to use properly. Reaching up, he flicked his friend on the nose. "You're...drunk!"
"We both are." Snickering, Bryce guided them further in to the building. "I can just hold mine better."
"I can hold yours if you want." Chuck blinked owlishly at Bryce. Then he started to snicker. "That was exactly what I meant. I can hold you, Bryce. You could probably hold me too, if you want." The world started to shift a little and he giggled.
Bryce's only reaction was to snicker harder.
Feeling warm, Chuck tugged at his polo shirt collar. The buttons were all undone, but he still needed more room to swallow. His tongue must have been the size of a football by now.
Suddenly, Chuck found himself sitting in a leather chair with arm rests. A bald woman with about fifty piercings in her face smiled at him. Her capped teeth almost dazzled him. "My, aren't you an interesting person?"
"This is your first time, isn't it, kid?" With a knowing grin, she looked up at Bryce. "For a lotta things."
Wiggling his eyebrows, Bryce grinned at her.
"So, do you have one picked out?" Instead of looking at Chuck when she asked, she kept her attention on Bryce.
"What one?" Blinking, Chuck tried to focus. This kinda seemed important. When he noticed she wasn't facing him, he followed her gaze to Bryce. "What one is she talking about, Bryce?"
Clapping Chuck on the shoulder, Bryce smiled at his friend. "Don't worry, Chuck, I've got you in my hands." With that, he grabbed the sitting teen by the shoulders and spun him around.
The world continued to twirl even after Chuck was certain he had stopped spinning. Tilting a little, he grabbed on to the closest thing. Thankfully it was soft and he could rest his chin on it. Relief suddenly came to his lower back as the heat was released. "Thanks, Bryce, I was starting to get too hot."
"Yeah, buddy, no problem." He traced his fingers over the pale skin. His index finger lingered in the hair above Chuck's ass. "Right there, make the wings wide enough to cover the entirety of his hips."
"You got it." Gravely voice sounding pleased, the woman leaned in close to Chuck's back. "You might want to grab hold of somethin, kid. This first bit's gonna sting."
"Hmm?" Having been dozing off, the feel Bryce's fingers on his skin comforting him, Chuck blinked awake. He looked over to find Bryce at eye level, smiling at him. He smiled back. "Hey, buddy. You look happy. How come?"
"Congratulations, Chuck, you made it." Leaning forward, Bryce pressed his lips to Chuck's nose. "You're one of us now."
"That's nice...Ah!" Pain erupted in his lower back. It felt like a thousand tiny needles were jabbing in the skin and Chuck wanted to get away from it. Surprisingly, he found his lower half wouldn't work. He started to scream it, but then his upper half wouldn't work either.
Closing his eyes, Chuck drifted off. His last sight was of Bryce smiling at him. For a moment, before he lost consciousness completely, he would have sworn Bryce's eyes were glowing.
Part 6: "College was the favorite time of my life, then it wasn't."
"Yeah, Bryce, I'm not thinking this is a such a good idea any more." Keeping his voice barely above a whisper, Chuck cast a quick look about the ancient library. The dusty tomes lining shelves were their only company, but he still felt like they were being watched. "Not like I even thought it was one an hour ago when you first suggested it!"
"Would you keep your voice down?" Penlight in hand, Bryce scanned the spines of every book within sight. "They are going to catch us if you keep whining."
"I am not whining." Affronted, Chuck scowled at his friend. It was enough to make him drop any further complaints. At least, verbal ones were out. He crossed his arm in an act of petulant defiance.
Bryce didn't even notice. Moving further down the stacks, he raised the penlight above head level. "These appear to be the oldest. It might be up here."
Not even caring at this point, Chuck looked away. This entire thing had been stupid. So what if they found the answer. Five extra credit points was not worth the risk of getting caught.
There had been a recent spate of expulsions for less lately. He didn't think most were for their most recent infractions, but one couldn't be too careful in this climate. Like the kid just yesterday for example. If getting caught in another student's bed after curfew was enough to get one thrown out of school, he was going to stay celebrate for the next six months.
"Ah ha!" Bryce's cry of success echoed back towards Chuck. Pulling out a book, he held it up. "I got it!"
"Shh!" Putting a finger to his lips, Chuck stared at his friend with wide eyes. Glancing around, he searched for any sign of being heard.
At first, there was nothing out of the ordinary. Then, a book closed some where a few aisles down.
Chuck's head quickly jerked around. Looking in the direction it had come he tried to see if someone was there through the shelves. He couldn't see anyone, but that didn't mean they weren't there. Alarmed, he turned back to Bryce.
Only, Bryce wasn't there. Neither was the book he had been holding.
The bottom fell out of Chuck's stomach as the world seemed to come rushing in at him. Lights came on above him, flooding the library. Swallowing, he slumped a little. "Oh, I'm boned."
THE END..........................
