She had a smile on her face. He knew that she probably wasn't even aware of it as she watched the passing fields. It had been there for so long that lines were starting to form. Not that Kyle could blame her.
He'd be smiling all the time too if he was married to Max Evans. He was the perfect dream guy for any girl who longed for that 'fated' romance. So, he was jealous of both of them. There was plenty reason to be.
Sighing, he turned from Liz's reflection in the front-passenger side window.
In the middle seat, Maria was asleep with her cheek on Michael's shoulder, again. The biggest of them all had stopped pushing her off sometime around Stratford.
Kyle remembered when because there had been big blow up about it in the restroom at that gas station. Literally. Michael had destroyed a toilet during their argument. They had been forced to flee before the station attendant could call the police.
He snorted. Kyle wasn't even sure there had been police in that town. It was one of those 'blink and you miss it' places. To be honest, he wasn't even sure what state they were in now.
Twisting, he started to ask Isabel, but caught himself. He was alone in the backseat; had been for the past two days. Isabel was probably in Boston with Jesse by now.
Crossing his arms, he tried not to sigh again. He had been doing it way too often lately. Kyle found himself slouching down in the seat. Staring aimlessly out the window, he watched the fences. They passed in endless tracks of barbed wire and posts.
Blinking awake made him realize he was drifting off. Had he been back in Roswell, he could have gone to his own bed. That was a pleasant thought, sleeping once more among his sheets and pillows. He scowled. It wasn't like he would ever see or do that again.
Settling in to the seat, he let his eyes close. Dreaming was free. He could do it any time he wanted too. No one was hunting him there at least.

Some twangy guitar music was playing on the radio. It sounded vaguely familiar to Kyle, but he couldn't place from where. His dad would know instantly. The Kit Shickers still got together for special occasions.
Well, they had the last time he called his dad. Staring in to space over a luke warm cup of coffee, Kyle tried to remember when that might have been. It must have been some time ago because he couldn't recall an exact date.
A sudden urge to hear his dad's voice had him look up for a phone. Now would probably be as good a time as any. Who knew, Kyle might actually get lucky and reach the old man. His schedule on the force kept him at out at odd hours. That was the life of a deputy.
Hell, Kyle grinned, his dad might even have been sheriff again. There had been an election recently.
In his search for a pay-phone, Kyle saw Max sitting in a booth across the small diner. He wondered where Liz was. Those two had been joined at the hip, some times literally, a lot lately. Didn't matter, she wouldn't have gone far, and not without Maria tagging along.
He sighed. Kyle missed not being able to even take a piss by himself. They never did anything alone anymore. It was far too dangerous for them to get separated.
Pissed, he looked down at the coffee. It looked old and cold, so he pushed it away. Instead of a normal scraping sound, the noise it made was dull, almost distorted. That made him frown. "What the heck?"
"'lo?" Max sounded a little panicked.
Alerted, Kyle shifted slowly in his chair to face the other teen. He frowned when he found no one else. Well, that wasn't exactly true. Max was there, looking directly at him.
The space between them narrowed. A distant pounding filled Kyle's ears, familiar and alien at the same time. Blinking slowly, he felt as if the air was a thick liquid.
Max's eyes a little wider than normal. Skin pale and shaky, he looked ready to dash if spooked. Dark marks under his eyes made them appear blackened. It was obvious the other teen hadn't been sleeping well for a long time.
Kyle's hands twitched with the need to touch him. He longed to reach out and steady him.
Swallowing, Max sat up straighter. The effort looked to take a lot out of him. "Who are you?"
The world around them began to shimmer and became distorted. Then it fluttered away in waves of bright lights, flashes that drowned out everything else.

The gentle rocking of the van woke Kyle. Blinking, he opened his eyes in time to see the tail lights of a semi speed off in to the night. As it disappeared the only light left were from a distant security lamps. That was enough for him to see the world around them.
Trees and grass grew from medians and a picnic area. Surrounding this was a cement parking lot. Reflectors marked the different spots for cars. He could see a building in the distance marked 'Bathrooms, Food, Maps, and Information'.
They were stopped in a rest area.
Soft snores drifted over the middle seat distracting him. He could see the tangle of Michael and Maria's limbs above the backrest. There was no doubt as to what position they were in.
Apparently they had made up from their fight earlier.
The front seats were empty. Kyle didn't have to look over his shoulder to know why. Their camping gear was probably being put through its paces again by the newlyweds. That had become their favorite past time since they got married. Not that he could blame them.
It must have been nice to have someone to do 'it' with. A tiny smirk formed on his lips. He was becoming sentimental in his old age. The smirk fell.
He would be nineteen in one week's time. This would be his first birthday spent on the run.
Looking out the back window, he glanced up at the stars. He wondered if he would be spending the next several out here too. For some reason, that didn't seem like such a bad thing. Would he be able to see the stars from up close one day?
It was a pleasant thought. To be traveling out there with other races, he had once considered it as a kid. But that was a long time ago. He was older now and knew what was out there. Still...
The stars became fuzzy and distinct. Sniffing, he rubbed at his cheeks to relieve the growing pressure. He must have been developing an allergy.
He could go there one day. They all could. They were free to go anywhere in the world, and beyond, they wanted. All places except one were open to them.
Staring out the window, Kyle longed for a different sight, a place of sand and rocks.
