Staring at the wall, Chris hugged the bedclothes around his torso. No matter how close they were, he would not close his eyes and sleep. The sheets were comfortable enough and the blanket was plenty soft. Ezra knew this, because after all, they were his own.
Running a hand through the man's hair, Ezra looked over to the doorway. His tired eyes fell upon the man standing there. "Any suggestions?"
Nathan pulled the hand away from his face with a shrug. "We're doing all we can for him." Glancing to his left, he shared a look with Josiah. "Each of us has faced their own death and came out of it with time."
This earned a nod from Josiah. "I feel sorry for our brethren in the other professions." Pushing his hat down further, he shook his head with a shiver. "At least we are given some time before we are pressed in to the Almighty's service."
Ezra grimaced. The word sparked something in his own mind, something he had yet to do. He cast a cautious look over to the saddlebag hanging off the back of his vanity chair.
The other two followed his gaze. Josiah was about to ask a question, but a quick shake of Nathan's head made him blanch. Swallowing, Josiah looked back to the man in the bed.
Curled up under the blankets, his knees were drawn to his chest. Chris' hair hung over his face in hapless knots.
The only word that came to Josiah's mind was 'childlike'. It was going to be a hard future for them. There hadn't been a new member of their group in almost fifty years.
Watching Chris blink, Ezra continued to stroke his hair. He hadn't meant to start it, but once he did, could not stop himself. There was no harm in it. Besides, the other man didn't seem to mind. So, he continued.
