"It's broken again." Buck jerked a thumb over his shoulder.
Sighing, Josiah pulled out his comm. "I'll call maintenance." Flipping it open, he hit the autohail.
At the counter, the android continued scrubbing at the same spot over and over again. It's normally bright blue eyes were at half illumination strength as it stared off in to thin air.
Across the pilot's officer's lounge, Chris gave the machine a half glance before going back to his paper. It was technically illegal to print it out, but as the commanding officer of Team Seven, no one was going to bring it up with him. "It's not broken."
"Then what's wrong with it?" Bringing the mug of reconstituted coffee to his lips, Buck blew the steam from its top. After half a second's hesitation, he took a sip. He almost spit that small bit back in to the mug. Forcing himself to swallow, he grimaced. "Oh damn, I wished they would fix that thing already."
"That isn't the Andi's fault." Swallowing deeply from his own mug, Chris didn't even so much as flinch. Of course, that had a lot to do with the liquid depressant currently flavoring his. Very much illegal too.
Nathan dropped his mug in the sink, leaving the ceramic for the Android to wash. "You say that about everything he does wrong!" Bypassing the machine, he glared at it. When it didn't acknowledge him, he snorted and stopped at the cooling unit. "At least the damned thing can keep us stocked up on supplies."
"Has anyone seen brother Ezra?" What Josiah had directed towards the others in the hopes of getting a reply, he was surprised when it was the Android that responded.
Sighing, it made a distracted negative sound.
Having frozen at the cooling unit, Nathan turned slowly to stare at the Android. He pointed at it while glancing to the others. "Did that thing just do what I think it did?"
Grinning, Josiah closed his comm. "I reckon so. The Tech kid said he'd be here soon as he finished with the one on level Alpha Three."
"That does it. Now I know someone's been messing with that stack of circuits and silicate chips!" Pulling out a bottle of orange liquid, Nathan slammed the door shut. "I say we put it for a new one and scrap the one we got."
"Not happening." Chris took another drink from his mug before setting it down on the table. To emphasize his point, he shook out the news print.
Nathan raised the bottle, pointing it at him for second. He started to say something, but shook his head instead. It wasn't worth fighting with him over it. The bucket of bolts only cleaned up after them anyways.
Josiah twirled the edge of his straw in his Choco-Stimulant. On a hunch, he stated clearly, "Ezra."
The Android sighed again. This time, it shifted position, but continued to scrub mindlessly at the counter.
Shivering, Nathan looked at the machine with disgust. "Of course." Taking his bottle, he stormed out of the lounge. There were by far less irritating things out there to deal with, such as Genuvian Razor Slugs.
Now catching on to the Android's temperament, Buck twitched his mustache. "Ezra, Ezra, Ezra." When the Android sighed three times in a row, he chuckled. "Well, now, I do believe I understand it now. The poor thing is love sick."
Standing in the doorway, JD stared in open aggravation at the android. "Oh great maker." The door closed behind the tech, driving him further in to the room. "Not this one too."
"How many does this make?" Since it seemed that Chris wasn't going to be any help, Buck made it his duty to deal with the kid. Then again, it was his unofficial duty to mess with him anyways.
"This is the seventh Vindroid Model in the past ten hours." Walking to the counter, JD set his tool box down. "The one on level Alpha Three is moping after a pilot who left three days ago. That's not even the worst. A series K-7D on the Shatter Star stepped between two Mandori Generators when his chosen love interest rejected him. Completely wiped its memory core!"
Chris lowered his paper. Staring at the young man over the top, he raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, don't worry, yours is safe. That Charlotte woman was a real Khotz. The Android Master General is bringing charges against her for it." Having popped open his tool box, JD pulled out an imaging scanner. He pulled open the screen and began to ran the sensor over the back of the distracted Android's head. He groaned. "Just like the others, there is nothing wrong with their hard circuits. It's gotta be an electro-chemical conductor misfiring."
Setting down his scanner, he looked hopefully at Chris. "I don't suppose you'd let me take a look inside it, would you?"
Harumphing, Chris raised his paper again.
"Thought not." Closing the scanner, JD dropped it back inside the box. He shut the box with even less enthusiasm. On a hunch, he reached out and grabbed the back of the Android's hand.
The Android stopped moving. Eyes brightening, it turned to JD in question. "How may I be of service?"
"List the priority of personnel according to importance in your soft drive." He watched the Android's eyes intently as it seemed to consider his question.
Its eyes flashed twice before it took a quick breath. "Chief of Operations Officer: Standish, Ezra. Captain Larabee, Chris. Lieutenant Wilmington, Bucklin."
JD held up a hand to silence the Android. Looking to Chris, he shook his head. "Has Ezra been given the Vindroid special treatment again?"
"Define special treatment." Buck wasn't the only who enjoyed jerking the kid around. "No more than usual. I've come down on him after the last time."
"Well, it seems to have imprinted its neural pathways upon him." Picking up his tool box, JD carried it to the door. "Short of rebooting the Maker Sacred thing, there isn't a thing I can do. You will simply have to live with a mopy machine until Ez gets back from the Mene Recreational Hub."
"Oh, lords around!" Pushing his mug away, Buck looked with disgust at the Android. "I've never thought I'd see the day when I wished he'd get back sooner."
Snickering, JD left the Officer's Lounge. There were five more calls he had to attend before lunch.
At the counter, the Android seemed to lose steam. Slowing in its actions, it stopped scrubbing at the counter. Carrying the rag to the refresher drawers, it dropped the cloth inside. Shoulders slumped, it meandered back to the regeneration closet. With little effort, it backed inside and closed the paneled doors.
While the regeneration cycle started, Chris picked up his mug. The contents were heaven and made all the annoyance over the situation melt away. He supposed they were illegal for a reason. Not that he cared.
Buck continued to scowl at his mug as if it might bite him.
THE END....................................
