Day 24.

Weather: Storm clouds are rolling in, but it never actually rains. It makes for a grey, but very comfortable day.

Events: While there's no storm today, the house still seems to be reacting like there's one going on. The house creaks, there are cold drafts, and the lights flicker at random before the power temporarily goes out. Those power outages, though? They're not a house-wide thing. At some point today, everyone is going to be in a room where the lights flicker and briefly go out. That's when you'll see one of ( these guys watching you from the shadows. )

Meet the Zangbeto. They'd be almost cute, under different circumstances. Randomly appearing in a dark corner or hallway? Not so much. These living haystacks brush against the ceiling when standing at full height. They're bulky. Imposing, even. And just when you start to wonder if there's a person inside that thing, that's when it will rush forward, ready to bowl you over, or... whatever these things do. Before they can hurt anyone, though, the lights go back on, and these voodoo guardians are gone, with only a rush of air hitting you.

Yes, that's right, they're voodoo guardians. You didn't think you were getting out of this New Orleans setting without a run in with voodoo, did you?

The Zangbeto are not the only strangeness to be encountered today. Outside, from beyond the river, that pleasant jazz music that's been playing has been replaced by drumming. Occasionally, chanting can be heard along with it.

There's chanting in the house, too. A deep, nasal male voice, sometimes chanting, sometimes just talking, can be heard throughout the day. He speaks in maybe some African language, or perhaps it's Haitian. The voice is always coming from one room over, or stranger yet, under the floorboards. It only lasts for a minute or so before it stops, but it is impossible to find the source of this voice. If anyone does go looking, they'll find that in less obvious places, voodoo symbols have been drawn in chalk. They're never in places that someone would naturally walk through. Instead they're in places like behind clothes in closets, or under the bed.

None of this is going to be the first thing that anyone has to worry about, though, because first, everyone is going to wake up hanging onto a plain voodoo doll, just like in the movies. These things need pins to work, right? Well luckily, everyone finds those next to their bed, along with a sharpie, and a note:

Write the name of someone in the house on your doll. A lwa will visit them in the night.

Pink for love.
Red for strength.
White for mind.
Purple for pain.
Black for misfortune.

Sure enough, there is one pin for each color listed. There's nothing in the note that says that the voodoo dolls have to get used. Some of these don't sound too bad, do they? There's also nothing in there about using them on yourself...

There's one person who got more than one voodoo doll. Joe found the baby in the King Cake, and his reward is a chance to do voodoo on three different people. He gets a set of pins for each voodoo doll, as well as one extra pin. It's a green one. There's no note explaining what it does. Wealth, maybe? Or something to do with nature? Would poison be green? He won't find out until tomorrow. Assuming any of this voodoo hoodoo mumbo jumbo works, anyway.
