Apollo watched Hermes from a distance for a long time, gazing as the god wordless walked among the mortal statues. It was a somber sight, the world frozen and silent, devoid of everything that gave them their greatest strength. Hermes’ face betrayed his concern, and dislike for the situation.

“Are you going to stand there watching all day?” Hermes called out finally, looking back at Apollo with a dark expression lit in his eyes.

“You seemed to be entranced….”

Hermes was beside him in a flash, the god of speed looking more like himself than he had since the fall of Zeus. It was that realization that made Apollo cringe slightly, casting his eyes away as he licked his lips.

“You wanted to talk, I assume…” Hermes commented, his arms crossing over his chest in an annoyed air. “So talk…”

“There isn’t any reason not to be civil…”

“I’m being perfectly civil. Civil does not require me to be kind, however, to a brother who betrayed the whole of his people.” Hermes scoffed, turning to step past Apollo. He had no intentions of listening to his brother it seemed.

“Hermes, wait…”

“Why should I?” Hermes snapped, “You! You are the reason everything is like this. How long do you think our world can survive like this? In a world that doesn’t move? People give us our power, their knowledge of us keeps us here. Their buying, their selling, their movies and music, their love, their wars, everything they do keeps us here! Look at them!” His voice echoed like thunder in the stillness, motionless people vibrating with the sheer power behind Hermes’ anger.

“I am sorry….” Closing his eyes, Apollo looked away before he knelt slowly before his brother. “I do not deserve your forgiveness, but I beg for it none the less, my brother. I have been selfish…reckless. Of that I cannot be absolved, I know…”

“Forgive you?” Hermes’ voice sounded hurt more than taken aback. “You want me to forgive you? Why should I? You would have fed me to the wolves!”

“Please!” Apollo cried, looking up at Hermes, “for my crimes I cannot repent enough. Tell me what task you would ask of me, and I would do it…”

“Your fate isn’t in my hands…” Hermes snarled, turning away angrily. His shoulders were tense, and his head was bowed in an uncharacteristic manner.

“Hermes…”

“Just stop! By Zeus, just….just stop.” Hermes glanced over his shoulder at Apollo, eying him cautiously. “Why did you do it?”

“It was meant only to affect Aphrodite, Ares and Hephaestus. I did not intend for the whole pantheon to crumble. “

“Well bravo, brother, because you fucking set us all on our asses. Thank you, it was an excellent experience. We’ll have to do it again sometime.”

“I did not…”

“You did not, you did not, not, not, not. I got it! Congratulations, you fucked up something you didn’t intend to fuck up. You played with fire, and we all were burned. I’m unbelievably proud. Now go away….”

“Hermes….”

“Go away! Just go. Go apologize to your muses, to your counterpart and the whole mountain. Bleed for them, and then maybe I’ll be ready to give you. Maybe.”

Gaping a little, Apollo sighed and stood. There was little point in trying to argue forgiveness out of Hermes. But…but at least he had tried. It as a start of a long list.

Apollo walks for a short while, distancing himself from the site of the confrontation with Hermes before he feels that he is, once again, not alone in the field of frozen humanity.

”It is a rare thing, son of Zeus, to be so universally despised by your brethren. I thought perhaps I was the only one so hated, for so little a reason.”

The elder god, seated at an empty table in front of a busily stationary restaurant, slowly folds down the newspaper he is holding, so that Apollo can see his face. Cronus smiles kindly. “I do not believe we have met, formally...”

Apollo paused, tilting his head to the side to eye the god sitting down. It was rather obvious they didn't know each other. Or rather, Apollo was momentarily clueless about who the other was...

At least until he turned toward him slowly. "A rift that time will heal. But they often forget what it means to do something in the name of duty and honor."

"Ah yes. Time, that wonderful vehicle. Always roaring along, forever forward." Cronus glances around a moment, his smile growing fractionally. "At least that's the typical take on the matter."

He finishes folding up the newspaper completely and sets it on the table before standing. The Titan offers his hand to Apollo. "I am Cronus, though some others refer to me with more derogatory names. I believe you are Apollo? A pleasure to finally make your acquaintance.”

"Time may stop for some, Titan, but it is forever in motion. No one really has the power to stop it. Not even us." It was his opinion on the matter, and in moments such as these he could be very logical, rational.

"I am Apollo," he agreed, before taking Cronus' hand cautiously. The idea that this Titan was the father of his father did little to temper his worry. What did, after all, Cronus want with him? "Is there something you needed?"

"You couldn't be more right, Apollo. Time has only slowed, not stopped. Very perceptive of you, my boy. And my praise means something, at least when it is concerned with Time."

Cronus took a moment to look the god up and down. "Straight and solid, just like your old man. Say, you haven't happened to have seen him lately?"

"I take it you had a hand in this," whatever this was exactly. Frowning he considered all the possibilities carefully, before deciding not to go too deep. Some things were better left untouched. At least for the moment.

"My father has been 'dealt' with by those who have appointed themselves an unearned power." Which of course could, in part, have to do with the fact that Apollo himself had been chosen by his father to assume the throne for a time. Until, well, things happened.

Cronus' characteristic smile returns slowly. "Yes, I had some hand in dealing with your spell, and this was part of the result. Fascinating stuff, really, your spell. You'll have to tell me where you picked that one up... Or was it your own original creation?"

The Titan's eyes wandered to the shoulder of a man frozen next to him. He absently brushed at his shoulder, dislodging some unseen dust. "Dealt with? Who would have the power to do such a thing? And why?"

"A god who claims power almost solely from Kings would find that he is possibly not as strong as others. Hermes and Ares, in particular, would find their powers have increased. We all have in some ways." But not Zeus, God of Kings. It was his downfall, really.

"They did it with a spell. It seemed only fair to show them the dangerous of magic even to them." Things, however, had not really gone as planned. He didn't know what yet, but in time he would learn.

"Fascinating. Hermes and Ares? Certainly others would have to be involved. While I might not know Hermes well, Ares is little more than a blunt instrument."

Cronus crossed his arms, his piercing eyes, not at all clouded by time or age, bore into Apollo. "Zeus and Poseidon are gone... but Hades is here. Or did he somehow escape his fate? You can see, I am only returned to this place, and you seem to be the only god to have any idea what happened to formerly throned children..."

"Hermes was not a part of it, but he was aware of its coming and did nothing to stop it." Apollo corrected with a slightly annoyed expression. It was not meant for Cronus, though.

"Aphrodite, Hephaestus, and Ares are singularly to blame for this. I cannot say how or by what means Hades escaped his fate. My sight is clouded as far as they are concerned."

"You are angry about this, yes? Angry about the presumption, anyway."

He took a step closer to the younger god, placing a hand on his shoulder. "You know that, for the time being, there are no Kings and Queens. I have seen to that. There are three anointed ones, adorned with tattoos given to them by the Fates, who will decide who the rightful rulers are. So cheer up, dear boy. Those gods that offended your father are no longer in power, and need not ever be."

He blinked, looking at the still figures around him before waving his hand around.

"You're doing, I take it? All of this?" He would compliment the Titan, but he was quick to wonder at the motives. "Why? What could Cronus, Former King, hope to accomplish in all of this? No one save maybe a few titans would support your rule, I am almost certain. So what do you get out of it?"

"I have no wish to hold a throne, Apollo. I have purposely disallowed myself in the spell that brought all this on. I am aware how empty such an honor is, especially now. I have other motives for arranging these events, and they will either become clear in time, or prove me a superstitious fool."

"Either way, new regents will be crowned soon, and they need to be crowned in order to set Time back to her appointed speed. The gods are typically sluggish to react to new circumstances, but they will eventually get on the right page, begin to play this little game, in order to take what they believe to be theirs. Why not take your place as the King of Heaven? You are a better choice than Ares."

"Are you suggesting I find these three anointed ones, and suggest to them I would make a better king?" Apollo laughed without humor, shaking his head. "I can see that one would turn out well."

He tilted his head to the side, his eyes narrowed softly. "Are you playing games, Cronus? The other gods might feel I have played enough games of my own."

A look of distaste spread across the features of Cronus' face, transforming the paternal visage into something a bit more pained. "What is the fascination, in these modern times, with the gods and supposed 'games'? Truly it is a mystery to me, the use of this terminology when all of existence, including ours, is currently in limbo. With the world, the source of our ever diminishing power, for all intents and purposes at a standstill, there is still talk of 'games'."

The elder god circled Apollo, gesturing grandly to the paused world around them. "All of this, a game? And your feat of magic, the punishment of the usurper gods, a game? The ritual that cast down Zeus, Poseidon and Hades - a game?! No, Apollo, we gods have no truck with games. At least no god worth his salt, anyway."

Cronus comes to a standstill when he is back in Apollo's field of vision. "And your ascension to the throne of heaven - would that also be a 'game'? I can assure you, Apollo, that Ares does not view such things in quite such a cavalier manner."

"Games, games, games. Yes! Yes these are games. Call them what you will, Cronus, but we are all playing Chess, trying to outplay the other to capture our goals. Call it what you will, but the analogy stands."

He didn't bow down to Cronus. Not Apollo. He had stood against Zeus when even Ares would tremble, and no Titant would cause him grief.

"If I make a bid for the throne, Cronus, it will be because I deem it best. And first act would be to met out just punishment."
