Monday, on the 6 O'Clock Evening News
After the opening credits the normals news broadcaster jumped right into stories, reading from the TelePrompTer in front of him with the appropriate expression on his face, "Good evening, breaking news, tonight police are investigating the cause of a multi-car pile-up tonight. Reporter Tricia Takanawa is live with the details, Tricia," He looked at the monitor on his desk as the camera switched over to an Asian woman standing outside of St. Martin's hospital with its lit up sign clearly displayed in the background behind her.
"Thanks, Tom. Police are investigating the cause of a seven car pile up at the intersection of Miles Avenue and Vine Street this afternoon, the result of an apparent tire blowout. It was about 4:45 P-M when police and paramedics responded to a 9-1-1 call alerting them of an accident at the intersection and arrived on scene to a gruesome discovery." Tricia gave the lead of the story before it jumped to cut shots of witnesses explaining what they saw.
"All I saw was the kid's bike, the back end of it, lift up into the air before all the other cars started skidding and crashing," The first witness, a middle-aged man said, obviously having been interviewed at the scene earlier with the flashing lights in the background and police and other witnesses around.
"I just handed my wife the phone and told her to call 9-1-1 after all the cars finished crashing so I could go help out some of the people who were injured," Another, younger, man said with a sad, dazed shake of his head.
"I saw that boy fall off his bike and just go tumbling right under the car behind him!" An older woman gasped and covered her mouth, clearly feeling emotional about what she'd witnessed.
Tricia Takanawa's voice over cut back in over some cut shots of the wrecked cars and some people who were treated at the scene for injuries. "Police have released the original 9-1-1 call which one of the drivers of a car involved in the accident had placed."
The video cut to a put together background as the tape started playing and a transcript popped up on screen in time with it:
911 OPERATOR: 9-1-1 What's your emergency?
CALLER: There's been an accident, a big one, with....um...multiple cars - seven I think. There was a guy on a motorcycle something happened to, I think someone-
911: Okay miss, can you tell me where you are?
CALLER: I don't...Vine Street - Vine Street and Miles Ave. You really need to hurry there are a lot of cars involved and I think-
911: Are you injured miss?
CALLER: What? Yes. Sort of. I'm okay, I'm fine. There's a van on fire!-
911: Miss, calm down and stay where you are if you aren't in danger of being further injured-
CALLER: There are a lot of injured people out here, you need to hurry and there's a van on fire!
The recording cut off with a click, presumably with the caller hanging up. Tricia Takanawa's voice over returned, this time over top of a home video someone received of a teenager and a police officer who arrived on scene dashing to a minivan that was on fire and pulling out two little girls under the age of five and their mother, who wasn't completely conscious and pulling them to safety. "The woman who made the phone call, seventeen year old Gilian Madsen according to police, was the driver of one of the cars involved in the multi-car pile-up. Sources say she left her car to help a thirty-three year old Doris Watson and her daughters Emily and Amy out of their van, which had caught on fire in the crash. She declined to be interviewed this evening."
The camera cut to Doris Watson who was propped in a hospital bed with her some bandages on her head and arms and her daughters sitting on either side of her. "I remembered hitting the breaks and that's all, then I remember waking up and the girls were out of the car and this young girl was trying to get my seat belt off of me," She explained as she squinted in the camera lights.
"She saved our mommy!" The older of the little girls said - this report was obviously in the middle of it's human-factor of the piece.
"I'm very grateful for her help and for the police officer's help in getting us out of the car," Doris added honestly before the camera cut back to Tricia Takanawa live outside of the hospital.
"Police are investigating the initial cause of the accident after taking witnesses statements tonight. The motorcycle driver's names has not yet been released as his family members have yet to be contacted. Most of the other motorists were treated on scene for minors injuries or taken to St. Martin's for observation. I'm Tricia Takanawa, live at St. Martin's Hospital, back to you Tom."
The broadcast jumped back to Tom Tucker in the newsroom where he switched gears to talk about some lucky puppies that had been adopted after being abandoned by their owners.
