Game Rules
We've provided you with backstory for the game. Where you go from here is up to you. We want you to come up with plotlines. There will be mod-controlled events that happen, but they will be few and far between. This game is a place for you to plot, play, be creative. These rules are merely to try and keep your experience here as pleasant as possible. Please pay attention to the following:
1. Six character maximum. (unless you're insane and/or can prove you really can play all your pups).
2. Strict 17 and over AGE LIMIT, for players and for characters (for now, at least). This is an adult game, with adult situations. Don’t try to lie. We can tell.
3. POST REGULARLY. You will be expected to interact, whether in the threads you post or ones you reply to. We'd like you to post each of your characters at least once a fortnight. It's not a rule we enforce strictly, but we will send out reminders if you disappear. If you want, you can post all your characters in one thread. (see here for an idea of how it goes).
3a. RELATIONSHIPS. You will likely end up with your character in a relationship with another character. Please keep in mind when entering into a marriage/exclusive relationship with another player that if you suddenly vanish from the game it puts that person's character into a holding pattern that is not fair to the player. If you have to leave, okay, but talk to your partner and come up with something their pup can say to explain their partners absence and/or let them move on.
3b. How to set up a post. The easiest way is this:
Who: (eg. Carr)
When: (afternoon, morning, or a specific time)
Where: (Village Square, the Inn, character's house)
Open To: (OTA/MW/specific player)*
Thread: (Multi or Single)
You don't HAVE to use this set up, but please at least make it clear a) what style of threading you prefer, and b) whether you want one response, or several. For explanations of what the terms mean, please see the FAQ.
4. This is a role-playing game. It is not real. You will be playing CHARACTERS. That said, we expect you to put some time and effort into creating real characters, with real backgrounds and histories, personalities etc. What they are is up to you, but don’t slap together a two line history and attach it to a pretty PB picture and think that’s all it takes. For canon characters, please don't just cut-and-paste from a wiki entry or fansite. It's not big and it's not clever. Again, put some thought into it. There are few characters (if any) whom we know everything about. Make up a backstory, take them AU, use your imagination.
5. PLAY NICE. Keep the OOC drama private, or better yet, don’t bring it at all. IC drama is fine, as long as all the parties involved agree to it. Plot amongst yourselves. Have fun. But that brings us to rule six.
6. NO GOD-MODDING. Thou shalt not play for another character without said character’s express permission. Thou shalt not have your character know something he/she/it could not possibly know. This includes describing something about another character's appearance, what they do, what they say, without the agreement of the other player. If you are found guilty of this and the situation can not be resolved to the satisfaction of all parties, you will be removed from the game. Period. Likewise if there is any OOC drama that makes us have to take time out of our lives and our playing time to deal with you. We’re not here to babysit you. Play nice, share the toys, and if you’re done playing, clean up before you go home. Or we’ll make you sit in the time-out chair. Seriously.
7. NO POWER-PLAYING. This means do not put another character in an impossible situation [for instance locking them in a cupboard and leaving them there - yes I know it's silly but it has been done]or make a character unplayable [for instance by dropping an important thread unresolved] or pre-empt someone's plot by resolving it for them before they are ready. Talk to other players - that's what IMs are for.
8. Along a similar vein, NO CANON-PUNCTURING. Say you play Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory. If you were to come across say, Spock walking across the square, there is no power on this earth that would stop you talking to him. That's great! HOWEVER. Please (unless you have permission from the player), DO NOT TELL A CHARACTER THAT THEY'RE FICTIONAL, or provide them with evidence of such. An important part of the game is knowing how and when to handwave. If you find yourself stumbling across a situation like that, it's best to avoid mentioning it - at least in public posts. If you want to have your character make a private 'wtf' post, that's just fine. But canon-puncturing is a no-no.
In a similar vein, it's probably best to avoid mentioning anything too specific. Things like what movies are on general release, who the current political leader of your character's country is, and what wars are currently going on are probably best left unmentioned. If your character's the kind of person who does regularly make mention of popular culture and/or world events, that's not a problem - just be wary of assuming that every character in the game will know what you mean when you start referencing America's Next Top Model (or whatever).
9. NO KILLING. Your pups can be depressed, they can get divorced, they can rant and rave, they can have visions. They can go mad (and likely will.) But they can not kill or otherwise physically harm anybody else, nor can they attempt or commit suicide without approval from the mods. If you simply must kill someone, get mod approval first.
10. SEX: have it. Go ahead. We don’t much care if your pups are doing it, with who, how often, or in what position. Slash, het, whatever. It’s all good…except for the following: NO UNDERAGE. NO RAPE. AND mark your threads adult content AND FRIENDS LOCK THEM if that’s what you’re going to write. Smut isn't to everyone's taste - we don't want to force it on anyone.
11. Posts should be in past tense. Such as, "Carr stood behind the bar..." and not "Carr stands behind the bar..." If you forget, don't worry we won't beat you. We'll just remind you nicely.
12. BE ACTIVE. We can’t stress this enough. Play. Post threads, reply to threads, use AIM, Y! or another instant messaging program to ping the other players. This game offers a lot of freedom. Use it wisely, but don’t abuse it.
13. SPECIAL EVENTS. From time to time there will be special things happening in and around the Folly that will affect all characters. These are voluntary; if you don't want to be involved, loopholes can be found. But PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST PARTICIPATE IN PLOT AT LEAST ONCE. After all, that's why we're all here - to play.
14. New players must be active in the game and in good standing (few or no dropped threads, appropriate posting amounts) for ONE MONTH from time of first post before taking on another character. We welcome and encourage multiple personalities. But if you can't play them all it just gets awkward. Test the game out, make sure it's a good fit, then apply away.
15: HIATUS You may request hiatus if you know your real life is going to conflict with your ability to post and play all your pups within the two week period. HOWEVER. That hiatus will last a month, tops, and if you return you cannot go on hiatus again for at least one month. Failure to follow this rule will result in removal from the game. Feel free to apply again, when you have more time to spare.
*** In the application where it says What does Carr keep under the bar? The answer is, bananas for the daquiris.
