Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What time period is the game set in?
A. Professor Montgolfier, and the mountain, come from an alternate 'steampunk' version of Earth, one in which steampower and not electricity is the foremost in technology. This means that things are a little more fluid, but timewise, around the 1900s, though the village and castle are much older. That's not entirely relevant, however, since the portals are from different universes and different times, so you could have Greek heroes having conversations with Romulan mercenaries (for example).
Q. Can I get off the mountain?
A. Yes and no. You can get off the mountain (for example by building a hot air balloon or a plane) physically, but you can’t get home. You can fly around the mountain itself, but you can’t fly through portals or return to where you came from.
Q. Does my character have to be canon? If so, from where?
A. Not at all. We welcome applications for original characters, though please be aware that we will scrutinise them for any signs of Mary Sue characteristics, or thinly-veiled variations on canon characters. (For example, if your character has lilac eyes, is endearingly clumsy, and a genius as well as being stunningly beautiful, you might not want to apply. Likewise if you have a character who looks like Harrison Ford, who happens to fly a spaceship and have a walking carpet as a copilot, who’s called Fran Bolo, think twice.)
As far as canon goes – the world is your oyster. We ask that you don’t apply for ‘real’ people (eg Brad Pitt, your neighbour…) but other than that – TV, film, books, graphic novels, games, legends – if it’s fictional, it’s fair game.
Q. Can I be evil?
A. Absolutely! It wouldn’t be much fun if the Folly was filled with boyscouts. We welcome good, evil, and every shade of grey in between. Just remember the rules – no godmodding, no killing without mod permission.
Q. Can my character contact people he/she left behind in his/her own world?
A. Nope, sorry. Just as people only travel one way through the portals, there’s no way to get letters/emails/phonecalls back. There is one exception; if there is canonical (or logical, for OCs) basis for your pup being contacted in other dimensions. For example, Castiel contacted Dean Winchester in the past, and when he was in an alternate reality. Therefore, he can be contacted on the Folly. He cannot, however, be rescued. And neither can physical objects be passed back and forth.
Q. What do OTA, MW, Multi, and Single mean?
A. These reflect different threading styles.
OTA - Open To Anyone, ie you're not wanting a specific character to reply.
MW - Multiple Welcome, ie you're happy with several characters joining the thread.
Multi - multiple threads, like a party post, where each different character posts their entry to the main post.
Single - single thread, ie a character joins a pre-existing conversation with 2 or more other characters.
Q. Is there a minimum posting length?
A. Technically, no. We're not enforcing a word count rule. HOWEVER. We expect decent length replies from all players, of at least a few sentences. After all, it's difficult to react to "she laughed." ten times over. (Trust us, we've been there. It gets real old real fast.). Any player who regularly posts single-line replies will be spoken to by mods, and if neccessary, suspended from the game. After all, we're all here to write, and we all want threads we can be proud of, right?
And lastly, some helpful links:
Tab Renamer - This re-names tabs, which helps when you have multiple tabs open on IJ which tend to say the same thing despite having very different things in them. And let's face it, occasionally you don't want people to know what you're looking at, even if it's something as innocent (and potentially embarrassing) as an RPG. Another helpful hint to avoid nosey friends/roommates/parents reading what you're writing if you're on windows is to simply press the windows button (down between CTRL and ALT) and D (for Desktop). This brings up the desktop.
LJ Login - Prevents you from having to switch accounts.
Save Images - useful for saving screeds of icons; this saves all the images on a page at once.
Cookiepie - This enables you to maintain different cookies storage in different tabs and windows.
Hollow art - good for finding icons of your chosen PB that fit with RP-style rather than 'normal' icons. Tends to be blanks with facial expression, rather than textured/text-filled icons.
If you have a question that isn't answered here, leave a comment or contact one of the mods (lupine_scot or
