Who: Harley & Eddie
Where: Pam's (RIP) apartment, Gotham
When: June 20, 2010
Summary: Harley and Eddie discuss the successful escape, Pam, and Eddie's health

Harley had given Eddie all the space he needed to grow acclimated to the new apartment. It was small and far from the typical definition of homely, but it was safe enough for the two criminals to hide out in. What had once been a haven of plant life had been reduced to wilted greenery. Harley's very presence was detrimental to the habitat, but she didn't have the heart to clear the plants out. Pam would have wanted her to let them live (or die) in peace.

Her task for the day was to return with all the goods on Ed's shopping list. Though clothes and food weren't going to be a problem, the long, multi-syllabolic medicine had proven a bit of a challenge. Whoever the guy was that Eddie trusted with the pills had been wary of the happy-go-lucky blonde that had skipped towards him, but with a bit of persuassion he had given her exactly what she needed.

She wandered back to her apartment, examining the orange bottle of pills all the way up the stairs. She was going to have to ask Eddie about them. She shoved the door open and jumped inside. "Eddie! I'm hoooome!" she cried excitedly. "Oooh, pink looks good on you! But I like green better!" One plastic bag came careening across the entryway to the living room that Ed had stationed himself in. It landed right next to him on the couch and Harley jumped with a loud cheer. "IT'S GOOD!"

Thank GOD there was a computer in the apartment. Sitting on the sofa, huddled over the laptop, Eddie had been hard at work all day. First, breaking into the hospital's data base to pull up his medical records and first copy them for his own personal use, then deleting everything they had on him; next, to read up on exactly what sort of cancer he had and to confirm what the doctor had told him, that he was essentially a walking dead man; finally, never being the type to give up so easily, he went online to see if there were any alternative methods for curing himself, but so far he came up empty.

A wave of despair overtook him, but only for a fifteen minutes at the most. Resigning himself to his fate, he was now taking the first steps he would have to make to arrange things for after his death.

The sudden arrival of Harley made him cringe, her loud voice aggravating his headache. Since he still didn't have any clothes after leaving the hospital, the only thing he wore was a fluffy, pink bathrobe that belonged to Harley but surprisingly fit him. Eddie closed the laptop so she couldn't see what he'd been working on, and told her, "Thank you."

The 'thank you' was for getting the medicine and clothes, not for the complement on how well he looked in pink.

"Did you have any trouble?" he asked, now rifling through the bag. He found a couple pairs of boxer shorts, a green suit that looked like it had come from a thrift store, a tooth brush and an already opened bag of Cheetos. But no medicine.

"Aw, Ed, don't worry about it. Ya get a new haircut, I'll compliment ya. A pedicure? I got ya covered! A new outfit's the least I can stay anything about," Harley beamed happily as she skipped further into the apartment.

As he searched through the bag, she leaped over the couch and landed next to him, invading his personal space to see what he had done to her computer. "No trouble! What's this?" she asked, pointing a prodding finger at the monitor. "Oh! And this?" she removed another, small bag of pills from the purse around her shoulder and shook it in front of his face. "Drugs are bad, Eddie. Didn't you learn anything from an Arkham vacation?"

Eddie hadn't closed the laptop quickly enough, and was disturbed by Harley's incessant questions, especially when he wasn't finished. Closing the laptop monitor the rest of the way, Eddie dismissed her curiosity by telling her, "It's my latest scheme." It was the truth, but not the full truth.

The bag Harley dangled in front of him became the full focus of his attention. Quickly, he made a grab for them. "I need those," he said, irritated. "They're not Arkham candy."

Snatching the bag, Eddie got up off the couch to distance himself from her so she couldn't grab it away. He pulled one of the bottles out and quickly read the label, put it into his pocket to keep it even more safe from Harley, and then looked at the other bottle, which he opened.

"Ivy is going to be pissed off when she sees all her plants." Eddie obviously had been too busy to look up the news about Ivy's death. "Where is she?"

Eddie's question was practical - Ivy was known for hating men and the dirty gossip around Gotham was that she was tasting Harley's pink taco. If Ivy knew Eddie was hanging out with her girlfriend, he knew there would be trouble.

He tipped a single pill into the palm of his hand and inspected this as well. He wouldn't put it past his underground contact to try and slip him something besides what he needed... such was the dealings between thieves. But the pill looked like the one he'd been given at the hospital, so he trusted it enough to pop it into his mouth and jerk his head back to swallow it dry. Hopefully it would get rid of headache soon.

With Eddie in need of help, Harley had done her best to not weep over the loss of her friend. The remnants of the TV were a sign of her momentary outrage and the withering of her apartment was a show of her reluctance to accept the inevitable, but there was only so much smiling that she could do. Ed's question crumbled the wall of happiness she had put up and sent her to her knees.

"She's gone, Eddie! She's gone!" she cried painfully. Her body shook as she sobbed and she hid her face beneath her arms. "The B-Man tried to stop her and then she-she-she was killed!" The anguished wails only grew louder as she explained the fate of her closest friend.

Eddie frowned as he watched Harley break down, his brow furrowing deeply. This was big news. Ivy meant nothing to him - she was a man-hating, controlling bitch who probably deserved whatever death was dealt her. However, Eddie did like Harley - she always had been there for him, just like how she helped him to escape at the hospital, no questions asked, no strings attached. She was the closest thing he had to a friend in this messed up life of his.

And Harley's sorrow was the only reason he felt bad that Ivy was dead.

A weeping woman was something Eddie didn't know how to deal with, and so he awkwardly watched Harley lament and wail from a safe distance. Finally, he told her, "I'm... sorry, Harley. I know you two were friends."

She forced herself into a seating position, her shoulders drooping pathetically. "I'm sorry, Eddie," she whimpered, sluggishly moving a hand up to rub away the tears along her face. "You just go back from the hospital. You don't want to hear me cry." Harley pushed to her feet and put on a smile as she made herself comfortable on the couch. "Why were you in the hospital, Eddie? It was all part of the escape play, wasn't it? That's a really good idea!"

Eddie stood immobile, staring at Harley, weighing his words. He saw how bent out of shape she had become over Ivy's death - he could easily see her going absolutely nuts if he told her the truth. She would weep and, God forbid, become clingy, and Eddie didn't think he could handle that. Only a couple days ago he had heard that he was going to die in a few, short months and that was something he was coping with; he didn't want to have to cope with her grief as well.

So, he lied.

Smiling slyly, he told her, "Thank you. It worked perfectly, thanks to you." He slipped the medication into the pocket of his bathrobe as casually as possible, hoping she wouldn't ask about it. The way Harley's mind worked, the best thing would be to distract her. "I think I'm going to change into that suit you got for me. Hand it to me, would you?"

"Aw, ya know I'd do anything for ya, Eddie," Harley replied with a watery smile. She got to her feet and picked up the green suit, handing to him. "I hope it fits, I wasn't sure what size ya wore. You're kinda...long," she decided with a shrug.

"I'm starvin', Eddie. Want something to eat? I'm sure I could make us a good meal!" Though out of what was yet to be decided. The apartment wasn't exactly stocked for guests. Harley herself had been living off of Super Sugar Bombs and chocolate milk.

"It'll be fine," Eddie said, taking the suit from her. "Better than walking around in this house robe, in any case."

He went into the bathroom, but left the door open to a little crack so he could continue to speak with Harley. He'd been so busy focused on the computer that he'd forgotten to eat all day. He took the pills out of the robe pocket and put it on the sink before changing. "Yes, please. Something to eat would be fantastic." The seizure pills shouldn't be taken on an empty stomach.
