Clark Kent; Superman ([info]themanofsteel) wrote in [info]modernage,

Entry tags:!plot 08: second time's the charm, atlee | terra, clark kent | superman, lois lane, {hiro okamura | toyman}, ∴ scenes: ongoing

Who: Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and any other staff at the Daily Planet. Open to dastardly evil doers from the future.
Where: Daily Planet, Metropolis.
When: Friday, June 11th, 2010. Morning.
What: The two top reporters at the Planet cross paths and actually exchange more than a few words. And then all Hell breaks loose.

It was hard to be Clark Kent sometimes, but then his civilian life as a reporter held its advantages as well. For one, he could follow up on police activities and investigate ongoing stories in full view, without worry of drawing any kind of suspicion. Acting in such a way helped him stay on top of a lot of matters in a way that Superman never could, and for that alone, he was thankful for his job as a journalist. But at the same time, though, he was also restricted. There were certain meetings, functions, and other responsibilities of his job that he simply could not curtail, no matter how much he would have preferred patrolling the skies of Metropolis or, in light of the current crisis, catching up with the interlopers from the future.

Rising from his desk and stretching as if he needed to, he sighed a little and walked off toward the break room. Instead of coffee, he grabbed a simple bottle from the fridge and sat down on the couch inside to just listen, not so much to his coworkers, but to the rest of the city around him, for any sign or signal that would help him in his current situation. So while it looked like he was leaning back and relaxing, he was actually deeply focused on expanded his otherworldly senses out as far as they would go.

As he closed his eyes, he became so focused on the sounds outside the Daily Planet, that he failed to notice the approach of footsteps that were all to familiar to him.

Lois wasn't exactly sure what time it was when she decided that it was time for something to eat. She didn't really feel hungry, and she certainly wasn't looking for a distraction. Since the kidnapping, Lois couldn't really think of much other than getting Iris back, and solving the mystery behind all of the kidnappings. She had chased nearly a dozen leads all around the city and surrounding areas, and still they had made very little progress. This morning, she had been checking facts, and trying to piece things together from the information that she had since before the sun had fully risen. The only reason she had allowed herself to be distracted was that she was starting to feel weary and a little dizzy.

Lois walked into the break room and opened the freezer, pulling out a frozen diet meal. "Morning, Clark," she said offhandedly as she read the directions on the side of the box. She paused a moment and glanced at her watch quickly. "Afternoon," she corrected herself quietly as she pealed back the plastic cover and dropped it into the microwave. She likewise pulled out a water bottle and started sipping from it while she leaned against the counter.

At the sound of her voice, he visibly startled, and it was not entirely an act. While it was of course impossible for her to tell what he had been doing in that moment, it felt as though she could somehow those first few seconds. As if she had caught him transitioning in or out of costume. Though really, given proper time, he did actually want her to know who he was, but just not... quite yet. He still had every intention of spiriting her away to his Fortress as he had told her, but given the current crisis there was simply no opportunity.

Opening his eyes and righting himself, he looked up and over at Lois with a little smile, adjusting his glasses as he did.

"Afternoon, Lois", he said, in that same friendly tone he always took with her. Usually, there would not be much more to their exchange than this, but here they were in the break room together with no one else to interact with, leaving a distinct... silence, following his greeting. A silence that made him scratch the back of his neck, as he felt a need to fill the void.

"So... how are you holding up?", he asked in reference to her tireless search to find a sign of Iris.

There was a faint noise as the group reappeared atop a Metropolis building. Hiro took a moment arching his head towards the sky and gave a little nod. He dug into his pocket, pulled out a small white device and turned it on. It had been based off a portable white noise generator but, naturally, Hiro had added his own upgrades. It would keep any pesky Kryptonians from overhearing their discussion.

He stretched once, raising his arms over his head then turned to look at his companions. There was a rather well endowed Terra. It was a shame that Atlee hadn't joined their cause. She'd had to worry about her own people but it hadn't kept Justice from missing her. And just like Iris, Hiro had had no moral qualms with cloning and tweaking his former teammates. There was a lot to be said for obedience and a larger cup size.

On the other side was an ever present bat bot. About two and half feet high, it hovered in the air looking rather silly with his felt stitched cowl and penciled on eyebrows. Even now it never failed to make Damian scowl. Turning to the robot, Hiro announced, "Execute camouflage mode Delta-Bravo-Four-Two."

There was a faint shimmer and the robot started projecting a holographic image. Hiro adjusted his goggles, pulling them over his face and flipping through the onscreen display. He hadn't heard of Superman doing any thing recently so the Daily Planet was the most likely target.

Switching into X-Ray mode it didn't take him long to locate one Clark Kent. "Predictable and boring as usual." Hiro rolled his eyes and then checked the time. There were still a few minutes until kick off. Not able to resist, he focused his gaze towards Lois. For a hectic newsroom, the Daily Planet had some pretty nice scenery.

Completely unaware of what was beginning outside, Lois just stared at the black plastic tray rotating in the microwave as the artificial cheese started to bubble around the edges. Those stupid frozen died meals never really looked appetizing.

For just a moment, she looked up. Something in the phrase, his tone of voice, sounded familiar. But she quickly passed it off as déjà vu and glanced at the rough draft of her story she had in her hand. "I'm alright," she said rather automatically. "Does 'interloper' have one or two p's?"

She pulled a plastic fork from the drawer as the microwave dinged. Disregarding the box's warning to let it stand for one minute, she carried the flimsy tray over the table, her eyes still fixed on the paper.

Clark was certainly unaware of what was going on outside the Daily Planet as well, both on account of Hiro's device and the distraction that was Lois Lane. He offered her a smile, but she did not seem to notice, which was more or less a common occurrence. He knew she was not deliberately trying to be rude, though, so much as... highly absorbed in her work, which he could respect. Even if he did long to catch her eye one day when he wasn't wearing his cape.

"That would be one 'p'", he said, grabbing his own notebook as if he had actually been doing anything himself. He jotted down random bits of information simply to look busy, but paused and looked up at Lois again when he saw her take the tray out of the microwave. While she was apparently oblivious to the small danger, he saw and felt the heat of the bubbling cheese, and given the lackluster material the tray was made of he saw a possible danger.

Even if it was a small one.

"Lois, you really ought to put something under that", he said, getting up and stepping over to her. "Here, let me take it so you don't burn yourself", he said, carefully taking the tray before she could protest. "It says right here on the top you were supposed to let it sit a minute", he added, as he mock scolded her during his attempt at a chivalrous act. That some of the steaming cheese had fallen on his thumb as he had feared it might on her own was something he ignored and hoped she did not notice, both for his own pride and because it was not burning his skin.

"Where can I put it for you?"

"Ugh," Hiro rolled his eyes, "they're practically domestic."

"I think they're cute," Atlee said.

Hiro gave her a critical look. "When we get back, I'm running a system diagnostic on you." Sometimes his programming was a bit too intelligent. The last thing he needed was his loyal femmebot to start having a conscience.

"T-minus one minute," the bat bot stated. It had powered down the hologram and was now readying its defensive systems. Behind the makeshift cowl, its eyes glowed an ominous red.

"You remember what to do?" Hiro asked.

"Yes, Master Hiro." Atlee gave her creator a demure look and batted her eyes.

"Then get into position."

With a nod, Atlee dove off the rooftop. She waved her arms, uprooting a chunk of pavement from far down below and formed a floating platform under her feet. Hiro nodded smugly to himself. It'd taken a while to get all the details correct. Most of Atlee's powers were easily duplicated by studying seismography but the finer nuisances of control relied heavily on short field gravity manipulation. It was an impressive stroke of work.

Her costume, in Hiro's opinion, was sheer genius. There was a lot to be said for fighting crime in a mini skirt. He watched her descent for a moment before checking his pockets once more. He knew Atlee wouldn't be much of a match but that's why he had come prepared with Plan B and C, but first they needed Superman's attention.

Seconds later, Atlee touched down. The pavement cracked under her heels and she looked up at the Daily Planet building. She spread her arms wide and the foundation of the building began to shake.

"Um, thanks, Clark," Lois said as he whisked the tray away from her. It was sweet, she supposed, that he seemed to care about something so small, but she felt the gesture was a bit unnecessary. She was about to tell him that he could probably just stick a paper towel under it and call it a day, when the floor started to shake.

Lois paused, placing her palms on the table to stabilize herself and as reassurance that this was not her imagination or afternoon dizziness. But the shaking continued, just the same.

Instinctively, she leaped to her feet and ran to the window, searching for the source of the problem. And there, more than ten stories below, there was a strangely dressed woman, with her arms spread wide over her head. It could not be certain that she was causing it, but since the other buildings around still appeared totally stable, and no one else looked anything but frightened, it seemed a decent guess.

Before he could reply, much less even set the tray down, the whole of the Daily Planet began to shake. As he looked around quickly as their fellow co-workers ran around or to the window, like Lois had, he failed to notice the steaming cheese all over his hands until he looked down.

Thankfully Lois had her back to him, so that he did not even have to pretend to be in pain, as he quickly wiped the cheese off before going to the window to look over her shoulder. While seeing someone in costume as the cause of the disturbance was not a particular surprise in itself, the fact that the woman below looked like an older version of the girl living with his cousin most certainly did leave him a bit puzzled.

He was about to tell Lois to take cover, but knew better. Instead he quickly slipped out of the break room, and into an adjacent empty office. Seconds later, he was flying out the opposite side of the Daily Planet from the threat, circling the building until he came down right before the woman.

"I am going to have to ask you to stop this immediately", he said, closing his hands over her wrists and forcing her arms down.

Traffic had come to a stand still with the occasional driver peering out of their open car windows. It was a sight to see. Superman restraining what looked to be a girl in her twenties. She was pretty enough, in a trashy sort of way, with wind tousled hair and tight clothes. Hiro's sense of fashion was hardly conservative.

Atlee smirked and didn't bother to struggle when Superman grabbed her wrists. She ceased her attack for the moment. Getting the Man of Steel's attention had been easy, just like Master Hiro had planned.

"Sorry," she chirped cutely, and tilted her head. "I only take orders from one man." Her gaze seemed to darken and the pavement beneath their feet started to shake again. Deep fissures formed in the pavement forming a loose circle around the pair. Water began to gush from a broken main and bystanders were already searching for cover. In just a few more seconds, they'd be launched high into the sky.

Lois had not really noticed that Clark seemed to running for cover. As soon as she registered the source of the attack, she turned and ran for the stairs. The elevators were probably on emergency shutdown, and they were not exactly a safe bet when the building structure was being compromised.

The stairs were a longer haul though, and Lois raced down them as fast as she could. About five stories up, the rumbling ceased for a moment, and she traveled even faster, hoping to make it to the ground before she missed when was happening. One flight from the bottom, though, it started shaking much more violently, and she slipped, hitting the cement landing hard, but immediately leaped up and continued traveling.

"We'll see about that", he said, as he used his x-ray vision on her. While he guessed that she was some kind of robot given her lack of a discernible heart beat, he wanted to be sure that no part of her was actually alive if he had to dismantle her.

Unfortunately, he did not have time to fully investigate as the pavement around them began to crack open in places. There was perhaps only seconds until everything really went to Hell, and so he did the only thing he could do until he knew what she was.

He flew straight up, still holding onto her.

Superman was wagering that as he took up her into the Metropolis skyline, her powers would either cease to effect the ground as she left the proximity, or that she would be forced to use them in another way to escape. Failing that, his only real good hope would be that she was an automaton, since he had made a solemn vow never to take a human life.

Atlee ceased the tremors as Superman hauled her into the air. Why expend the effort if the Man of Steel was willing to her job for her? She gave him her best puppy dog look as if she were caught doing nothing more than sneaking dessert before dinner.

Atlee might have felt real and even looked real (anatomically correct, thank you), but under the surface she was a complex piece of machinery. Hiro had gone to impressive lengths to avoid the uncanny valley but there were still a few lapses here and there. Faint circuitry in her mouth, a lack of sweat glands and heartbeat. And while Atlee AI was sophisticated enough to give her cognizant awareness it also kept her loyal to her creator who was currently watching the flying duo with interest.

"Right on time," Hiro flipped a switch on his watch and there was a faint hum as a force field shimmered around him. He might have been a genius but he was only human. Next, he gestured to the bat bot. It flew off from the rooftop, eyes flashing as it charged its laser beams and targeted on Superman's back.

Lois managed to make it down the final flights of stairs and flew through the open lobby. Others were running as well, fleeing the building in the fear that it would collapse under stress. But Lois was running for a different reason.

She fled through the glass doors and emerged on the sidewalk, realizing that the girl she had seen from the window was suddenly missing. But Lois knew better. She immediately looked to the sky, and saw a familiar caped form floating there, the girl in his possession. Quickly she glanced around, and realized that at least one of their photographers had the presence of mind to be taking pictures. So her responsibility was just to watch and keep track of what was happening to relay the message to the public.

With his eyes so focused upon the robotic version of Atlee Superman failed to notice the incoming danger in time. The laser beams punched into his back, and lurched him forward, but through it all he kept his grip upon the 'Atlee', as he glanced over his shoulder to find that his attacker was another doppelganger, though this one was... even further from the real Batman than Atlee was.

"Cheap shot... fine", he said, as he turned in the air, keeping his grip on Atlee to use her as a shield. "Let's see how you like it back."

With that, he took aim and focused his heat vision upon his attacker hoping to end this before it got anymore out of hand than it already had.

The bat bot cut its thrusters for just a moment. It dropped a few yards, easily evading Superman's heat vision before firing up its engines again and swerving off to the right. It tutted at the hero. "That's dirty pool, ol' chum."

Rather than renew its assault, the bat bot paused for a moment. Its red eyes glowed and dimmed as it scanned the area. "Perfect!" It exclaimed as it caught sight of Lois. "A damsel!"

On the roof, Hiro adjusted his googles, switching over to the input feed from the bat bot. He rolled his eyes when he saw Lois. "So predictable."

Now to give the bot a little time to do his magic. Hiro dug around in his pockets for a moment more, finally coming out with what seemed to be a complex PDA. He tapped in a series of commands into it and then waited for the show.

Not far away, Atlee's eyes flashed black and her features went blank. She recovered a moment later, looking more surprised than anything. They had moved onto Phase Two already. That was quick. She shrugged as best she could in Superman's grip, then turned her gaze to the nearby buildings. They really were just a bunch of glass and concrete.

The buildings closest to them shuddered as cracks started to appear on sections of the walls. Here and there a few chunks were already starting to shake loose, and all of them speeding towards Superman, even as the tremors increased.

Feel free to go on without me if your posts don't directly interact with me. I'm pretty sure you don't need me constantly saying "And Lois kept watching." :-)

It was so infuriating just watching this all happen. Lois knew that there was nothing that she could do to help, especially when most of the confrontation was taking place far over her head. But she watched the action intently and carefully, looking for an opportunity to assist Superman, and make sure that she could relay the events accurately in print.

When the building started to shake again, Lois could feel the tremors in the ground. Her eyes ran up the building, seeing as pieces started hurtling toward Superman. Immediately, she ran across the street, scarcely glancing around for traffic, but it was nearly at a standstill, watching the action overhead. She knew that she needed to get away from the rapidly destabilizing building, and hoped that they had the sense to evacuate it. Once on the other side of the street, she fixed her gaze on the action.

Naturally at the bat bots exclamation, Superman himself scanned the crowd quickly, and it was not difficult to see whom the little automaton had latched onto as the 'damsel.' Lois. Who else? Sometimes he wondered if she had some sort of meta power for attracting villains.

But, at least for the moment, he could not worry about her. Not with buildings around him trembling, and especially because she did not appear to be in any immediate danger for the time being. As portions of some of the buildings rose up and shot at hi like projectiles, he reared back as one of the pieces hit him and Atlee, bursting on impact.

"See what you've.. done!?", he said to Atlee, as though it would make any difference. "I am sorry for what I am about to do, but you have left me no choice", he added, still talking to her as though there might be some life within her, even if it was much more plausible that she was merely being controlled from afar.

Swinging her outward, he used her to bat away one chuck, and then another, trying to at once defend himself while attempting to render her in-operational to put an end to the quake.

"Hey!" Atlee let a yelp as one of larger chunks of concrete collided with her. That wasn't supposed to happen. Her eyes narrowed and she scowled at Superman. She tried to shove him away, trying to put a bit of distance between the two of them. When that seemed futile, she redirected her attention towards the floating building bits.

It didn't take much concentration to alter their trajectory, sending them speeding back towards the buildings. "If you won't let go," Atlee gritted out, "I'll just have to make you."

She tore more chunks out of the buildings but this time sent them towards the street below. Hopefully Superman would be more interested in playing the part of the dutiful hero than dealing with the immediate threat. She knew it wouldn't distract him more than a moment but it would at least allow her to regroup.

The Bat Bot halted in mid air. "And me without my meteorite repellent!" it bemoaned.

It redoubled its effort to reach the street level and zipped between cars and onlookers before coming to a stop. It hovered about fifteen feet above the street, checked to make sure Lois was still in its sights and then started initiliazing one of many sub routines. It emitted a series of high pitched chirps, then came to a stop in front of Lois (although high enough out of her reach.)

The bat bot flung out a hand. "I'm sorry ma'am, but I'm going to have to detain you."

This situation was a bit disorienting. As Superman flung the girl about, and pieces of concrete smashed off her, leaving her virtually unharmed, she realized suddenly that it was certainly not human. Regardless of the destruction she was causing, Superman would never be so brutal with a living thing.

But suddenly, there was something else pulling her attention. She covered her ears when the robot emitted a series of strange sounds, and her gaze shot up to the odd mechanized bat hovering above her. "Like hell you are," she said, nearly under her breath as she widened her stance in preparation to fight. She was dressed for the office -- wearing heals and a narrow skirt. But she was certainly not going to submit without a fight.

Superman watched as huge pieces of debris fell toward the still partially occupied street below. He watched as the little robotic Batman confront Lois. And, whether he liked it or not, he knew what he had to do now. Already he had wasted enough time with 'Atlee', and he could afford to waste no more.

"Since you will not stop", he said grimly, "I will just have to make you." With that, and with his hand still on her leg he began to spin, faster and faster, until they were both scarcely more than a that was all but unrecognizable to the human eye, aside from trace colors of red and blue. When he let her go, after spinning several thousand times in as many seconds he directed her straight up toward space hoping the atmosphere would either destroy her circuity, or she would get far enough from her controller to lose contact.

Whatever happened, she was at least off the board for the moment.

Looking down again, he saw Lois getting ready to defend herself against her own aggressor, but as much as he wanted to come to her aide he had to instead swoop down out of the sky. An old man, in a panic, had fallen out of his walker and there were just scant seconds left until one of the building chucks fell upon him.

Fortunately, that was all Superman needed. But as he caught the chuck and hefted it away in a safe direction, he could he still could not go right to Lois as more of the pieces continued to rain down.
