Who: Huntress & Batman
Where: Gotham
When: June 2, 2010 (Backdated)
Summary: After being kicked from the Outsiders, the Huntress makes her return to Gotham and is warmly welcomedwarned to behave by the big, bad Bat himself.

Gotham was a one-of-a-kind city. It took a certain quality of person to thrive in the corruption and blood lust and an even stronger spirit to fight the stranglehold of death and decay. It was the only place that Helena and her masked persona could call home and she was glad to be back.

Her time spent with the Outsiders may have been a complete waste, but at least her days in Los Angeles had been fruitful. She had finally been given an opportunity as a teacher and it had been short-lived, she was confident that she could regain her duel life once school resumed in the fall.

For now, she had to reinstate herself in the city. It had been months since the Huntress had been spotted and she wanted to assure that her reputation was still intact. To do so, she would start with the squabblers in the Gotham mod. They were small and easily frightened and it would provide her with the perfect opportunity to send the message of her return to the mafioso She crouched low on the ledge of a closed pharmacy and waited for her chance to strike.

After several years of using stealth to get around, it wasn't hard for Batman to approach Huntress unnoticed. He'd been keeping tabs on her every now and again as it were, so her presence on the rooftop was unsurprising.

They had been over the arguments before, and they would again, of that he had little doubt.

"If you can't even function as part of the Outsiders, what makes you think I'll let you operate out of Gotham?"

Helena had foolishly hoped that maybe, just maybe, her return would go unnoticed for at least one night. There were plenty of people in the city who would hear about her presence after one simple, string of attacks, but now that she had the attention of the main mask himself, she was going to have to tread more carefully.

"Look, I did what I could. You and I both know I'm not cut out for work on a team," she shot, not turning to acknowledge him. "Where else was I suppose to go? Gotham is as much my concern as it is yours now."

Batman frowned slightly.

"Gotham is my city. It'll be your concern when I say it is." He peered down toward the lit up city before the two of them, quickly calculating the route she would take should she decide she'd rather not be lectured. She wouldn't leave completely, tenacity was something Gotham City vigilantes seemed to possess in spades.

She was wrong about being a team player though. He had of course been keeping an eye on her. No matter how much Batman was an expression of Bruce Wayne's anger, there was just as much Thomas Wayne in his motivations. That deeply held hope that people truly wanted to better themselves, if someone just encouraged them to try. Huntress was no different. During her time with the Outsiders, she had even cooled off some what.

"The Outsiders were good for you. You need a support structure, and someone to give you restraint. You're not entirely cut out to operate alone."

The Huntress let her hand drop to the ledge of the building, gripping the cold concrete beneath her gloves. With anyone else, she would have been prepared to tell them to leave her the hell alone, but pulling something like that on Batman would get her thrown out of the only place she had left. It was not something she was going to risk. She could badmouth him in private later.

"I had been doing a good job of it before I met you," she muttered, finally turning to face him. Her jaw was set stubbornly as she did so, ready to hold her ground to stay within the city limits. "The Birds are here. That's enough for me and it should be enough for you."

Her suggestion that she had been doing just fine before they had crossed paths brought a frown to his lips. He waited until she turned around before he spoke though.

"Tell that to the men you murdered." The cloak was draped over his chest, so he made a show of crossing his arms, letting the fabric wrap around them before raising them up.

"You should know by now, that nothing is ever enough. for me. And your willingness to take the easy way out is exactly why I need to keep you under watch."

It would have been a waste of breath to defend herself. No matter who she met, her checkered past always made them a skeptic. She had been doing the city a favor eliminating those in power. They had a strange hold on the city and the only way to break it was to leave their hands lifeless. The way that Batman did things, the way that everyone in Gotham did things meant that more innocent people were going to be murdered again and again. She was the only one who seemed to think that fighting fire with fire was the only way to get ahead.

Instead of relaying all of this him, she raised her shoulder in a petulant shrug. "I've been playing by your rules. What else do you want from me?"

(s'okay, I'll live... some how.)

Batman left his cloak fall from his arms and pointed at her.

"You killed criminals rather then incapacitate and find out if they deserve it. You left the Outsiders rather then try to deal with them. You let your anger guide you, rather then drive you." He paused then, daring her to tell him he was off.

"The truth Huntress? I want you to prove me wrong."

(I see you survived :))

The Huntress' body stiffened not with the desire to fight, but in struggle to shield her emotions. He may have been right, but that was never something she was going to admit to. She had a handful of excuses at her disposal for everyone else, but for him, there was no sense in arguing.

"That's it? And just how am I suppose to prove anything to you? Nothing is ever good enough for the Batman the Great." She may not have been close with the Birds, but she had heard plenty to know that despite whatever good any of them did, however many lives were saved, he would never be sated. She didn't want to fall into the same trap that Oracle had.

(Well, I am Batman.)

Batman regarded Huntress for a moment. The truth was he wanted her to prove herself, he wanted her to be better then what she was. She had potential, but Huntress was her own worst enemy, if she was going to succeed, she had to do it on her own. She had to figure it all out for herself just as he had.

And if she couldn't, then she needed to quit, because otherwise she was just in the way.

"What do you expect? Step by step instructions? Tell me Huntress, is everything you've done really enough? Are you okay with getting thrown out of the Outsiders? Are you okay with losing every job? When you go out at night, do you fight because you want them to hurt, or because you hurt?" He turned away from her, taking several strides toward the edge of the building.

"If this is actually good enough, tell me honestly, and I'll know it's a waste of my time to deal with you anymore. If it's not, then change."

(You just love saying that, don't you?)

The Huntress folded her arms across her chest and turned her head away from him. Her chin jutted out stubbornly and her purple mask hid the frustrated knit of her brow. For all the confrontations she sought, she had yet to learn how to handle her own inner demons. Whenever someone took it upon themselves to pinpoint her flaws, she was left speechless. Not that any sort of comeback would do her good now. She knew the conversation was over.

"Whatever," she muttered in response and started in the opposite direction that he had gone. It was late anyways and until she figured out just what she wanted from herself, she was going to avoid rooftops. A conversation with the Bat was not something she wanted to have again.
