Who: Atlee and Booster Gold
Where: Metropolis
When: May 16, 2010
Summary: Atlee resurfaces from visiting her family.

It had been a while since Atlee had visited Strata. Although the surface world was fascinating-- there was always something going on!-- Atlee had discovered that the world didn't actually need saving every single minute. Just most of the time. And maybe twice on Sundays. (She still wasn't sure why that day was more hazardous.)

Slowly, Atlee was growing to accept the fact that she didn't need to be everywhere at once. And even if something was going on, that was where teamwork came in. The surface world had a lot more heroes to watch over everyone.

So without any crisis in sight, Atlee had taken a little trip down under. It was nice to visit home without any sense of life or death urgency. She had missed her Mother and Father, not to mention the home prepared meals. Although the surface world was fascinating, Atlee had to admit there were times when she found it hectic and confusing. In contrast, Strata felt comfortable and relaxed. It was uncomplicated and earnest. Both of which people seemed to try their hardest to avoid.

Still, all things had to come to an end. With promises to visits and long hugs, Atlee had started for the surface once more. She had stopped to detour a bit of lava flow, then continued towards the surface. Feeling the tremors moving through the earth, Atlee altered her course to the source of the disturbance.

What could possibly be going on now?

As she grew closer to the tremors, Atlee realized her mistake. Oh. They were doing that again. Oh well. At least she was almost at the surface. Finally breaking through the masses of dirt and soil, Atlee smiled brightly at the construction crew. She took a moment to survey their work.

"Wow. You guys are doing a great job. I'm sure traffic will be a lot better when you're done."

Atlee nodded in agreement. She wasn't sure what quotas were but it sounded important and all business like. With a wave of her hand, she sealed up the hole she had emerged from and waited for Booster to lead the way.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Gold," Atlee started, sounding just a bit tentatively, "but I thought Metropolis was Superman's town."

Wasn't that how it worked? Certain heroes for certain cities? Maybe they divvied things up at the start of each new year...

Booster sighed and nodded a bit.

"Well, you know, Supes is a busy man, and he can't get EVERYTHING. Well, maybe he can, but if you just spend all your time fighting crime, I'd think it all gets to be pretty frustrating. I mean everyone has to have some down time, right?"

With that he started away from the site. He couldn't tell who was running the construction of the street, but Metropolis had a lot of rich mega corporations that were run by a lot of ego-maniacal wackos who got rather tetchy if there was too much super hero activity around them.

Atlee trailed behind the blue and gold clad hero. Her gaze flitted between Booster and Skeets. Having a personal robot companion didn't seem like such a bad idea. Maybe Young Justice should follow suit. Surely Hiro wouldn't mind if they borrowed some of the bat bots for a field trip or two.

Not seeing any signs of news crews or any giant subterranean monsters, the construction supervisor let out a loud whistle. "Okay boys, you had your chance for autographs. Daylight's burning!"

When they had moved away from the incessant pounding of jackhammers, Atlee nodded again. "Right. It's good to relax." Being a superhero was one of the most exciting things but Atlee had to admit that navigating through the furniture store with the strange name had been exciting too. (And they had snacks!)

"Superman deserves a vacation too!" Although Atlee had no idea where Superman would, or could, possibly go. Atlee grinned at Booster. "We've got him covered."

Booster stopped at a hot dog cart where the vendor smiled.

"No charge for ya green lantern! Good to see another big leaguer in town!"

Booster sighed, took a hot dog and passed over $5 grumbling, then turned back to Terra.

"Well, covering Superman is no picnic just to warn you. I remember one time I had to cover for him and.... The people here still think I'm a green lantern. Its a thankless job sometimes being someone who isn't the main guy. Gotta consider that."

Skeets chimed in, "Sir! That is just a testimony to how good you are doing. Think about it, no one ever thinks a green lantern is useless!"

Booster shoved his hot dog in his mouth. "Skeepfs... Mour mot helming..."

"But your costume's not even green!" Atlee protested. Okay, there was blue and gold and gold was kind of like yellow but Atlee was pretty sure colors didn't work that way. After all, no one went around saying Superman was wearing purple.

"And they don't have cute robot sidekicks." Atlee smiled at Skeets. She wasn't sure the little robot could appreciate it but a smile was always better than a frown. (Except, maybe, in Gotham City.)

"That's kind of my point. Hurts too when your heroins is your main source of income too. Brand confusion is definitely no fun. I think its cause that lantern in New York totally ripped off my cool visor with that goggle thing he has. What do you think Skeets?"

The robot circled Terra bobbing happily, "Sir, I believe I will reascend my normal thoughts on children in this case. Power Girl has excellent taste in side kicks. As for trademark infringement, protective eye ware is important to anyone in your line of business."

"I never even thought of goggles," Atlee admitted. She had known that every hero needed a uniform (preferably one with a logo on it) although Power Girl seemed to get by well enough. Most everyone on Young Justice wore masks and yet Atlee didn't have anything of the kind. "Do they really help? Where did you get yours?"

It wasn't exactly a prelude to shopping but since nothing in the city needed saving at the moment...

"Trade secret where I got mine. That and the story isn't really all that interesting. But does a great job of keeping bugs and dirt out of my eyes when I have to hurry somewhere in the air."

Booster then smiled one of his goofier grins. Not the "I'm a total idiot" one, but more the "I'm completely lost in this particular culture" one. "That... And the ladies dig the whole masked hero thing. Though, that's probably not a good reason for you.... Being a lady... And kind of young and all."

Atlee nodded her understanding. She couldn't help but wonder if there were super secret superhero shops which provided clothes and accessories. Maybe Booster Gold had a personal tailor. She made a mental note to ask Power Girl about it sometime.

Atlee nodded once more. "Then I'm glad I don't have goggles. I don't want a fan club," Atlee explained. "I just want to help."

It was more important to save people from rampaging subterranean monsters than it was to give out autographs. Wasn't it?

"Ah, fan clubs aren't bad. I mean if the people like you, there's a lot less red tape in explaining what happened after that super charged baddie you just beat into submission knocked down three buildings in the attempt. I mean look at Superman, sure Luthor doesn't like him, but really, he's the one who looses most of the buildings. The rest of the city loves the guy and he's given a lot of leeway when things go wrong. But look at Batman, sure he's a lot more careful, but people aren't even sure he exists, so any major property damage is a big deal. It may not be right, but public opinion is important in this line of work."

With that Booster laughed a bit and scratched the back of his head.

"That and its nice to feel appreciated. I mean its not like people in this line of work hear a lot of nice things."
