Gotham's A.M. Rush Hour
Who: The Joker
Involved: Oracle, Nightwing, Huntress, Zatanna, Black Canary, the Creeper, Cassandra (Batgirl) and open to anyone else who would like to participate.
Where: Gotham City -- In the midst of Gotham's financial district.
When: Monday morning, April 26th, 2010
Summary: The Joker wreaking havoc and destruction upon the citizens of Gotham.

Gotham city on a Monday morning, people were returning to work. The streets that made up the business district became alive with individuals heading for their destination. People talked on their cellphones, others smoked, and some drank coffee, every single one of them undisturbed from their mundane morning routine. Part of the routine at Gotham Square was the Monday morning stock news report, but the newscaster was giving the news of an incident from a couple of days back at Gotham's popular mall, Marcy's:

"...police believe the perpetrator may not have known he was working for the Joker. An unnamed source told reporters that 'Some believed that the attacker was actually hired for a children souvenir stand. From the surveillance video, it looked like he hadn't a clue he was working for the Joker'..."

A few early tourists watched the huge monitor in the front of the Gotham Stock Exchange building; they stared in horror and gasped as it displayed the surveillance video from the mall.

"Luckily the Batman was there in time to avert the situation."

The people watching, cheered, and applauded when they learned that their legendary hero had once again come to save the day. The anchormen continued to converse about the incident when all of the screens suddenly went blank, as did every monitor and TV in Gotham. Static appeared and a loud hiss came with it, everyone who had access to a television stopped and stared at the monitor in confusion. The Emergency Broadcast System had been hacked.

The static was replaced by an unclear image. Incoherent mumbling and obnoxious slurping replaced the hissing noise. On the top right corner of the screen, appeared two rows of rotting yellow teeth, in what seemed to be the shape of a smile. As the image came into focus, a quick tongue traced the smile.

The familiar painted face receded from the camera and grinned devilishly. The people watching stopped dead on their tracks and stared, no one knew whose life would be in jeopardy this time. Anxiously, they watched in silence, petrified with terror. They awaited the Joker's message.

"Goooood morning, Gotham! I know you're up to your same boring routines... So, I have taken the liberty of spicing it up for some of you. I know, how a lot of you are rushing to get to your jobs on time... Annnd, I just wanna remind yoou, to stop, and remember... how precious. Liffe. Really..."

BOOM!

The underground train station near the airport blew up. The concave ceiling collapsed, crushing the platform and train underneath it along with everyone on board the train and on the platform. The explosion started an electrical fire, a few stunned survivors staggered through the smoke and towards the exit. Screams were heard from underneath the rubble. Airport security and fire marshals rushed to the terrible scene.

From his location, the mad clown watched astonished from the amount of destruction caused by (what he thought would be) a small bomb. He burst out in laughter and looked at the camera.

"...Waah hoo hoo hoo! Whoooops! Forgot about that little doozie! But I'm sure by now... All of you are reminded of how precious your life is."

His laughter settled and he eased back into his chair. With a serious face, he addressed the superheroes, as he was sure they were watching.

"Noow. As for you, Caped-tards... So-called, heroes." He giggled, "Yooou get to show how much you value these.. uh-" Makes air quotation marks. "innocent people's lives. The very people who have bestowed this..." clearing his throat, "title, will depend on you. And everyone will see..how heroic you really are. Now for the viewers who may, enjoy the siiight of mayhem and destruction, like I do, ha-ha! Heeere's where things get in-teresting. The rail system has been rigged with six bombs, you will only have an hour to find them. If you should fail, well... let's just say your fans will be..." he squinted at the camera, "quite disappointed."

The Joker sat up in his chair, behind him were six mounted screens, monitoring each of the places he has outfitted with a detonator.

"Of course, the crowd must play by my rules, too! That means that all trains have to stop at their next station. Oh, and no one can leave; should anyone attempt to escape from their train, that train will get blown up." With the smack of his lips, he wished the heroes, "Happy huntiiiing! Hee-Hee-HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

The image switched back to the anchormen, stunned— not realising they were back on the air.

((OOC:)) All righty. The monitors are the clues. Listed below are the threads, each titled after the train station, it will have a description of what is shown on each monitor and its respective station. The sentences underlined will be the clue to finding the station. The heroes will then search for the bomb once they have established the location. REMINDER: You will have two days OOC time to locate and dismantle these bombs.

It had taken Barbara a little time to get her bearing on the camera coordinates at Admiral Way, but while she was staring at the image, she couldn't help but wonder why it wasn't focused on the inside of the train and why nobody was locked inside a powerless train car.

She needed more bodies, but with the water being right there, most of her operatives were far away. She could have called Dinah in, but she wanted Canary around as the ace of Barbara's sleeve. She wanted her friend to find the Joker while everything else was focused on the chaos of saving these stations.

If Dick wasn't already in Gotham, Barbara knew he was on his way. She reached a private comm line out to him. "Nightwing, I need you on the south side of Gotham lake. Admiral Way train station. There's bomb somewhere there and it's going to go off in--" She checked the clock. "--43 minutes. Are you close enough? I'm sending you coordinates and the Joker's footage of the bomb site."

Uncertain that Dick would be close enough or that he wasn't called away on Titans business, Barbara thought further and decided it was worth it to call in Damian. Yes, he was a bit young in her eyes for this mission, but he was also formerly deeply involved with the League of Assassins. She was pretty sure bomb building was their equivalent of that game with the colorful strangely shaped blocks and holes.

"Rook. I need you on the south side of Gotham lake. Admiral Way train station. There's bomb somewhere there and it's going to go off in 40 minutes. Are you close enough? I'm sending you coordinates and the Joker's footage of the bomb site."

Rook split off from Nightwing to cover more ground, but was soon corralled by Oracle. He listened to her instructions and changed course, knowing that the situation tonight was different. That did not stop him from mouthing off though, even as he followed orders, "You can't handle it on your own?" He smirked even as he entered the train station. The background noise was not loud enough to mask what he muttered next, partly due to the high gain microphone, "-> Tt <- Women."

He stopped in the shadows to look over the video that she had sent and get orientated.

Displayed on the top centre monitor: In the interior of a crowded train, were people panicking after hearing the news from the train TV. There sat a henchman waiting. The previous night, the Joker himself had instructed him to ride this train to the Stevensburgh stop, where he would receive further instructions. After watching the Joker's broadcast, he was barely able to contain his excitement at being hired by Gotham's finest criminal&mdash to help him carry out this malevolent scheme. He had no idea that he would be risking his life. (Note: This is one bomb the heroes will not manage to find, the monitor displaying this area will not give them enough clues. They can figure it out a bit too late.)

Twenty minutes. After securing the other sites (or at least getting trusted people to them), she had twenty minutes to confirm the location of the last bomb. She had had a program running to match the crowd from Joker's footage with current footage on the train system, but with people shifting around in the panic it had only narrowed the search down to ten trains.

Barbara brought all of these up, checking each one carefully. She didn't get it on the first go, but something was nagging her, something she had seen in her first looks. She went over each picture again, gasping when she found the right train. There had been one man sitting there, one man who hadn't moved from his seat, and that man was smiling.

She hurried to open up a line with Zatanna again, to let her know the last bomb was on the Stevensburgh line while there was still time to fix it.

Zatanna faded into the station and saw another train full of terrified passengers. She didn't know how much time she had but it couldn't be much. Certainly she didn't have enough left to use the same spells as before. (In fact, she suspected there wasn't the time to find the bomb, either, let alone attempting to disable it.)

Think, think, she needed to think. "Time to go big or go home." Waving her hands, Zatanna concentrated as hard as she could: "Tropelet sregnessap ot nosniboR kraP!" It was the biggest empty place she should think of on short notice and, more the point, it was far enough away that they should be safe. (She hoped; she didn't honestly know where the Joker was.)

"Namhcneh ot em! Sepor dnib mih!" Zatanna grabbed his shirt and pulled him close. "You're going to tell me where the bomb is and then you're going to tell me where the Joker is." She scowled. "And, believe me, you don't want me to say it backward..." And neither did she, truth be told, since she hadn't had time to catch her breath.

Watching the Stevensburgh train monitor, the Joker noticed his henchman was missing from the picture which lead him to search for him a couple times on his monitor. Once he was unable to locate him, the Joker instantly reached for his phone.

"Think you're safe.. don't yoou?" he mumbled angrily to himself. "I'll take care of you right now."

Helena had done little more than scare a few mob underlings the first night of Oracle's request, but she was determined to get somewhere tonight. All it would take is a little research.

Early to rise, Helena took a handful of files to the nearest coffee shop from her hotel. She was paying handsomely for a location on the east side of Gotham's largest park, never knowing that such a prime spot could save the lives of dozens.

With a warm cup of coffee in hand, Helena settled down at the first empty table she spotted and got to work. Tonight she would pay a visit to one of the Falcone's and-

For the rush of morning, everything went suddenly quiet. Helena turned her blue eyes up to see what had happened when she caught sight of the Joker's grisly smile on the television. She held her breath and listened.

Just before the broadcast ended, Helena was out the door with her comm to her ear. "Oracle," she spoke urgently, wondering just how many other heroes were trying to get her attention. "I'm on the east side of the park. Where am I going?"

The answer to the question on Helena's mind was a lot. A lot of other heroes were trying to get Barbara's attention, and she had all of them on the back burner for the moment. First things first--she overrode the PA systems for the entire Gotham train system. Oracle's robotic voice came on over the speakers across the city.

Stay calm and remain in the train. We are working to get you all out safely, and to do that we need you to stay where you are for the time being.

She brought up the images from the Joker's message, quickly enhancing them a bit and giving each its own screen. She decided to start with the park, as it would be one of the easiest to identify. Being so urban, Gotham had a limited number of parks, so it wasn't a stretch to narrow it down. Only two out of all the parks had elevated train systems nearby, and a quick comparison of each station's design gave her East City Park Station as one of the locations.

Now who in the queue was in that area?

She saw the transcription of Huntress's message. I'm on the east side of the park. Where am I going?

"H. East City Park station. There's an elevated platform. The bomb is somewhere within picture shot. I'll send you an image from the Joker's camera." A few clicks and the East City Park Station capture was given to Helena, and she dimmed its image so she could focus on the other five.

It may have been a stupid idea to openly approach a bomb that the Joker was monitoring without a mask on, but time was short and Helena was less concerned about her identity than the hundreds of people who could potentially lose their lives should she fail.

She ran across the street towards the park with ease. Traffic was slowing as news spread chaotically throughout the city. There were already gawkers watching and waiting by the rail lines, excited by the threat of death and destruction. So much for Gotham's good Samaritans.

Helena slipped passed a group of onlookers and came beneath the tracks. She began to inspect ever pillar while trying to place an exact match to every pillar. After that, she was just going to have to figure out how to disarm the bomb (or bombs, as she had yet to discover).

The first bomb she found was on the shadowy side of the tracks. She rummaged through her bag for a knife and set to work on disarming it. One glance at her watch told her she had 47 minutes left to figure it out.

After East City Park station, the next easiest to identify was the platform with looming skyscrapers behind it. One of them was Wayne Tower, practically at Gotham's heart. Barbara knew it from a lot of angles, and her near total visual recall gave her a starting point. Checking some security cameras in the area confirmed what the Joker was forcing them to look at.

Now the question was who to send to this place. While Gotham and nearby cities were full of willing superheroes, the hour deadline put a crunch on everything. She needed to get her fastest agents into the field now.

She opened a line with Zatanna. "Z. I need you to look for a bomb that Joker has rigged. Sending you an image and coordinates. You have fifty minutes to find the threat and nullify."

Zatanna was not "in" at the moment. In fact, she was as far "out" as was extra-humanly possible, doing some magical research in the alternate dimension that Shadowcrest shared. But that didn't make her unreachable. (Although, no matter what plan she chose, she didn't get cell reception there.) However, using mystically sound methods, her communicators were forwarded (for lack of a better word) through to her.

So while the Joker was making his televised debut, Zatanna was blissfully unaware. Until, that was, Oracle made the call. It took her a minute to get out of the zone and into a place where she could respond. "Got it, O."

"Krow sehtolc no!" Zatanna commanded. "Ekat em ot--" and then she read the coordinates (backwards of course) as given to her by Barbara. In an instant she was gone, only to reappear miles away at a train station. (A train station? Well, whatever.)

Frightened people were visible on the trains and Zatanna instantly set to work freeing them. (Nothing like a crowd of anxious people to cause a few accidental deaths.) "Elpoep mlac. Eerf meht." On the platform she watched them move almost mechanically. "Og emoh." Then she ceased worrying about them anymore. (She might have less than the full fifty minutes now but there was still enough time for these people to make it out of there safely and of their own volition. Sending them home herself would be to taxing-- especially when she had other concerns.)

And speaking of other concerns-- "O, I need a sit rep. Can you give me anymore clues beyond the fact that there's a bomb here somewhere?" It was hard to focus her powers when she didn't know where to look. "Do we know who's behind this?" She had a sinking suspicion about who it was and that didn't bode well for Barbara's state of mind...

Oracle was slightly preoccupied uploading bomb-diffusing refreshers to everyone's communicators. Sure, some people like Zatanna probably wouldn't need them, but it wouldn't hurt to give a refresher course. She saw Z's message flashing on her screen and opened up a communication line.

"Unfortunately that's all I've got. I sent you an image of what he was displaying. The bomb has to be contained within the station within that shot. And you are..." She glanced at her camera feeds. "Definitely between the correct trains. I'd assume those are the likeliest locations...is everyone gone?"

She turned her eyes to the final image. She had cut a video of what was obviously a moving train from out of the Joker's footage, but the train was cramped, crowded, almost impossible to see anything behind the people. "It's the Joker. We've been trying to cut off this big attack, but in his usual fashion, he beat us to it. A bomb went off at the airport station." Who knew how many people were dead as a result?

She frowned, pausing for a few seconds as she contemplated telling something to Zatanna. She was Bruce's friend and a JLA member. There was no reason for Barbara not to mention this except perhaps to spare the magician's feelings, and it was important for her friend to know the gravity of the situation. "He also tried to a smaller device at the mall, but Batman contained it. I haven't been able to reach him since, so we're on our own here."

Cassandra was tired. After the events at the mall, she'd redoubled her efforts, checking every alley and shaking down anyone she could think of. Unsurprisingly, she had run into a lot of dead ends. Still, she had to do something. Batman's encounter with the not Joker was just the preface (or was it prelude?) Either way, it was the beginning.

The girl had barely slept. She'd slipped back into the Clocktower a time or two, just long enough for a quick nap, then she was on the street again. Cassandra hadn't changed out of her uniform in days. She'd been downtown when the Joker made his announcement.

She'd watched from a nearby rooftop as people crowded around an electronics store. "No," Cassandra had said, her eyes wide and unblinking. Her horrified whisper was lost amongst the panicking crowd. She could already hear sirens in the distance.

Cassandra ran across the rooftop, not stopping until she was in sight of the nearest subway station. Already there were signs of panic. Cassandra paused wondering how she was even going to fight her way through the crowd. It didn't matter. She had no choice.

"Batgirl here," she said, hoping both her connections to the Outsiders and the Clocktower would stay intact underground. "I'm... downtown." She scouted the best way inside as she (hopefully!) awaited a response. She wasn't sure if she was at the right station.

Barbara couldn't figure out anything by the convenience store's appearance, so she started to examine the architecture of the lobby itself. The tiling depicted people on a blustery, rainy day. That was the downtown station on the east side of the financial district, which had about five entrance ways. She tried to check the functioning security cameras, but all the commotion inside the station was making it difficult to find the right frame.

She read Batgirl's message and checked her location. "Batgirl. I'm sending you coordinates. There's five entrances to that station. I need you to find the store in the picture I'm about to send you."

"Okay." Getting near the station would be easier than fitting her way down to the platform, provided she could get close. Cass paused, for a moment, watching the crowd as she unraveled a grapple. Over the crowd, past the ticketing machines, then make her way through the lobby to the closest store.

If it didn't match what Oracle was sending, Cass would move onto the next one. She could do this. The stores were close together but the panicking crowd was going to make things difficult. Hopefully the Joker wouldn't hide the bombs. With luck, they'd be brightly colored monstrosities.

One of the guards at the station had actually given Barbara the tip off she needed. He had seen the telecast and stepped outside to confirm his suspicions that it was his station. And he had placed a call to 9-1-1 that she was able to trace.

Oracle was running out of bodies. Out of options, she targeted a 10 block radius from that station, broadcasting on all team frequencies that she could. "I need someone in the Merchant Exchange district on the line now."

Jack had been trying to keep it together since he'd caught the broadcast in a coffeeshop in the area, rushing out. The Creeper was positively giddy, all clamoring crashes and the tumult of twisting churning madness that wrapped around his braincells like happy little snakes. He had to focus, had to get clear to get changed lest he accidentally unleash his other half in the entirely wrong place.

He'd gotten out his communicator, maybe in hopes of demanding someone stop him. Maybe to request backup. Maybe to offer. He didn't know yet, but he did get the transmission.

That's not it at all, is it, Jack.

"Alright, tell us- hehehehe- what you need us- aha- to do," he managed to bite out between chuckles, careless of his identity just for the fact that this was Batman's town. No doubt they all already knew. Not that it was going to matter for long anyway. He'd liked to think he could control the transformation at will, and he generally could, but then came the Joker. The Joker meant Harley meant the Joker meant his mad alterego was just dying for a playdate. Maybe he was sabotaging himself, he wasn't sure.

No, I'm just Batman. I wonder if he's kosher.

He wanted to suppose that it depended on how they slaughtered him, but they didn't slaughter people. Priorities. They had priorities.

"Shut up," he bit out but then devolved into an apparently serious case of the giggles. He wasn't the madman vigilante, but he'd get more information than the Creeper ever could so he did try to hold out. The canary-colored lunatic would bolt off in a fluff of feathers and giddy giggling. He ducked into an alleyway, pulling off his tie and searching quickly through his belongings.

Let's go ride the boomytrain!

Something like that.

Barbara checked the line. One of the Outsiders. She remembered her conversation with Cassandra the other night. The Creeper. There wasn't even enough time to shake her head. "Okay. Sending you the coordinates of a train station where there's a bomb and the image the Joker was playing. There's a security guard station and a bench and a trash can in the frame. Look for the bomb and diffuse it."

She was about to let the comm line go, but then she thought better of it. "Be careful with the bomb when you find it. Whatever he used seems very volatile." She wasn't half as worried about the Creeper as she was about the people on the halted trains.

Disaster sight near the airport

The moment the Joker had appeared on the screen every hero in the nearby area seemed to have jumped into action. Zinda was no different. However, she didn't go on the hunt for the bombs. She hopped into the Aerie Two and flew to the bomb site near the airport. It looked like a war zone, but this was the work of a madman. Shaking her head she reached for the radio above her head and pushed the button. "Gentleman, this is the Aerie Two. I need a landin' spot." She said releasing the button and getting static for a few seconds before a man's voice came over the radio, indicating where she could land.

Once the chopper was down, Zinda stepped out of the chopper and hit the button on the communicator on her wrist that went straight to Oracle. "I've landed and am ready to start evac." She said as a paramedic helicopter a bit further down the way started up causing a huge gust of wind to rip around her and kick up dust. "Not sure if ya can hear this over the chopper blades, Skipper, but if those other bombs are anywhere near the same size as this one... Just ya gotta find 'em. Lady Blackhawk out." She glanced around and quickly spotted a station set up to coordinate rescue efforts and took off to it.
