Who: The Joker, Red Hood, The Batman. OT GCPD/Batfamily/Reactions
Where: Vincefinkel Bridge.
When: July 4th
Summary: It's time for the epic showdown between Clown, Bat, and Hood.

"And tonight's forecast is partly cloudy with ten percent chance for rain as we move on through this rockin' Fourth of July weekend! You can expect enjoyable beach weather this evening as our firework display kicks off over Gotham Harbor. We'll be going live to Gotham Harbor later to--" The weatherman's expression turned dark and his eyes jerked from side to side as he read from his teleprompter.

"It seems there has been some sort of accident on the Vincefinkel Bridge where a tr--"

The song and dance of the over-the-top "meteorologist" flickered several times. The scene twisted and jumped around from the station's green screen to what could only be described as a veritable war zone. Bent and twisted metal heaps dominated all the channels before the screen rattled and focused on dark purple lapels. The camera climbed higher until it found the distorted and twisted features of an inhuman grin. "Gooood evvveeening ladies and gentlemen." The voice that poured out of the screen was smooth and utterly dripping in malice despite the grin stretching paper white flesh. It was a voice that turned grown men's legs to jelly and stomachs over and over. The camera shook away from the scarred countenance to a scene of utter chaos. Men and women were convulsing in the front seat of cars. The mad man continued his address even as the scene unfolded further to reveal children in the back seats, "Boys and girls." Insane little giggles burst forth from his throat as it moved away from the car to more than two dozen men, painted to look like clowns. "Freaks," his tongue stretched out that last letter, "of all ages."

"We are your duly appointed celebration council.." The camera rattled as the cameraman paced forward, his gait uneven. The view jiggled as he turned to focus on the gathered henchmen. "But first, observances must be made. This is, after all, a country set its ways." The clowns turned and gave a half hearted salute to Old Glory flickering high up on top of the suspension bridge's towers. "Raise 'em high boys!"

"Now.. let's get this party started." On that cue, several mortars streaked from behind the camera's view and detonated a hundred yards away. Cars erupted in large fireballs and the bright colors of fireworks flew from from the twisted wreckage. Horrible laughter erupted from Joker. The camera fell to the ground where the lens cracked. His gangly form stalked away from the camera before the transmission was cut.

-------------------------------

"We now go live to Bob Cain above the Gotham River." The anchor tried to be calm and collected but the severity of the situation bled through. The sweat gathered on his his brow and the way his hand shook, spoke volumes.

The steady beat of a helicopter's propeller was a constant as the on scene reporter took over for the anchor duo. A rail-thin and very disheveled man was seated in the back of a chopper and it was possible to see the bridge behind him. "Thank you Rich. I'm Bob Cain, reporting to you over Gotham River where The Joker has sealed off Vincefinkel Bridge." His words were casual and observational but the tension in his body was obvious.

"As you can see here, Joker has sealed off both ends of the bridge with overturned semi trailers. It is believed he did this simultaneously, causing massive pile ups on either side." The camera moved to an external view and the picture zoomed in for a closer look. Large trucks had indeed been flipped on their side and a pile of wrecked cars on either side did a decent job of sealing off any cracks in this barrier. "So far the GCPD have been unable to move passed this wreckage. Any attempts to do so have been thwarted by The Joker's accomplices and several traps." The camera ran the length of the bridge to show the extent of the damage; cars were ablaze, people were running in abject terror. and clouds of noxious green gas hung like a fog here and there. Utter chaos. And at the center of it all, on top of wrecked delivery truck was the Joker.

"So far, any attempt for a helicopter fly by has resulted in retaliation from the Clown Prince of Crime. The large cache of fireworks seized by Joker have been used to attack news and police helicopters." Footage from earlier began playing on screen. A Police Helicopter was on approach to the bridge when the large mortar shells and automatic gun fire began to bombard the aircraft. "As you can see from the footage, Joker has this area seale-- Hold on a minute. Something is happening.."

The feed switched back to a live broadcast. Once again the camera was zoomed in and this time it was on a pair of henchmen spraying long black lines on the concrete. It didn't take long for the lines to coalesce into a large bat. However the message did not stop there. After the bat was finished, they painted the words "Red Hood" inside the wing span with a blood red. Located in the center of the bat, between both words, was an empty space. A group of bound men were marched out to the symbol and thrown onto that empty spot. Henchmen stood watch over their hostages, While Joker moved between them, a tank of gasoline in his gloved hands.

The Clown Prince was calling out to someone..

Ever since the Joker had called him out with that jack-in-the-box of his, Jason had been keeping a sharp lookout for him. He had hoped that the maniac would have been easier to find (read: wanted to be found), but he continued to remain elusive. This didn't settle well with him. There was only one reason Jason could think of that would encourage the Joker to stay hidden - he had something big planned. He could have confronted the Red Hood in a back alley, but what fun would that be? Joker was a showman; he thrived on the attention a big spectacle would bring.

So it was because of this knowledge that Jason had settled himself on a nearby building close to the bridge. There were going to be fireworks, cameras and people all over; it was the perfect place and time for Joker to make a move. And wouldn't you know, he did make a move. For a man that appeared to be sporadic, he could be fairly predictable.

Jason immediately headed towards the bridge, listening to the news on his earpiece. It was the best way to keep updated on what was going on while he jumped roofs and swung from buildings. He managed to reach the top of the arch located to the right side of where the Joker was standing just as the group of bound men were marched out to the symbol the henchman had made.

He stared down at the group, recognizing the higher-ups of his crime circle. Jason let out an annoyed puff of air. What a worthless group of scum. He didn't say a word, instead letting the Joker notice his presence all by his pathetic little self.

The gathered men from Red Hood's little cartel twisted this way and that in their bindings. The struggle for freedom intensified as the acrid smell of gasoline hit the drug pusher's nostrils. Manic giggles were hard to suppress as The Joker moved among the men, the noxious liquid lapping over each mobster in turn. "Ohhh, shhh shhh shhh shhh!" Joker cooed to each man that struggled and tried to cry out when the gas touched them. His tongue lashed across his lips in an excited gesture. He was practically giddy.

Never one to miss the arrival of a guest of honor, Joker seemed to notice Red Hood immediately. His head turned almost unnaturally and those intense eyes roamed skyward. His eyes seemed to sparkle with delight at the sight of Red Hood. The clown stalked away from the group of mobsters and forced the gas can into the arms of a nearby henchman. Instinctively the painted lackey followed Joker and trailed gas behind the madman. As the clown came to rest in the shadow of the arch, he spun his hand above his hand and dipped into a bow with a dramatic flourish.

"Soo good of you to join us." Joker began, his voice ever the mocking tone. He stared up at Red Hood from under his brow. The edge of his cheek twitched in the beginnings of a grin but it was clear the clown was annoyed. This was going to be no fun if only Red Hood showed up. "Although, you're earlier than I expected." Joker commented with a look to his wrist as if he had a watch. His head turned to cast a glance over his shoulder at the mobsters. "Could it be?" He bit the bottom of his lip in an impish gesture. "Is The Red Hood worried about his friends?" The grin tore his features apart once again. "Oh dear! H-Have I struck a nerve?" There was another mocking laugh.

Joker's attention drifted from Red Hood to the immediate area. Dark, malevolent eyes moved from side to side in search of that familiar form. Where was his other guest of honor? Fashionably late? So unlike Bats. "Ahhh..." The Clown seemed almost euphoric and his head tipped back. There he was. "It seems I've forgotten your party favor!" Joker's right hand made a gesture and as if by magic, a single playing card appeared. The Ace of Spades was held aloft for all to see. "I hope you don't mind sharing.."

With a tip of that scarred countenance, the card burst into flame. A casual flick of his wrist tossed the card behind him. It drifted to the concrete where the embers ignited the long trail of gas. "So good of you to join us, Batman."

Jokers response came in Batman's usual manner; slipping from stealth to make a grand entrance. Though in this particular case, he switched off the jet's sound dampeners, just before he hit the bridge, and thus Batman appeared on the scene as a giant black shape that roared over the bridge.

He toggled the weapon system, having long sense contemplated the bridge. His usual ordinance of concussion missiles wouldn't work here. They provided a low strength detonation, a large blast radius but the same amount of power as a strong punch. He switched to his other ordinance. A highly explosive mine with a tiny blast radius. He fired them into the trucks blocking the bridge and continued forward.

He listened to the clicking from inside the jet as the weapons load changed to the gas bombs he'd loaded. It would make the joker gas on the bridge inert, but the people who had already breathed it in would still need the anti-toxin. Luckily, Wayne Enterprises had recently manufactured large quantities of it, and donated it to the police and local hospitals.

The bombs dropped on the bridge, along with a healthy dose of flame retardant foam. That ought to be enough to allow fire and rescue workers to get to the survivors on the bridge. The only obstetrical left was Joker's henchmen, and it was time to deal with them.

He pulled the plane into a vertical climb, then switched it to auto pilot. He keyed the "deploy" control, and the armor along the jet's underbelly slid back. The chair in the cockpit lowered, and the backrest folded down leaving Batman lying back and looking at the bridge. He undid the safety harness and dropped from the plane into the open air, extending his wings to let him glide down toward the center of the bridge.

For the last few feet he pulled the cape in, and dropped on the roof of an abandon car. Joker was a priority, so was Jason. He hated to leave them unattended, but for the time being he wasn't about to let these people die, not to serve his own emotional satisfaction.

He looked over the bridge, at the henchmen who surrounded him, and keyed the mines he fired. With a loud crack, the truck at one end of the bridge was ripped in half with both sides it was more then enough of a distraction to allow Batman to leap onto Jokers goons and leave half of them on the ground in pain before any of them had realized what had happened.

Joker wouldn't let himself not be the center of attention, not for long. Batman just hoped it'd be long enough.

Jason gritted his teeth. He knew Batman would arrive - it was a given - but it couldn't help being momentarily annoyed by it. He wasn't going to let Bruce get to the Joker before he did. He hadn't been looking all these months just to have Bruce put him back into Arkham. The annoyance he felt melted away, however, when he noticed Batman leaving the Joker untouched while he took care of the henchmen. Of course Batman would go do everything to help the citizens first, which left Jason to take out the main threat.

Shooting his grappling hook towards the other side of the arch he was standing upon, Jason let himself swing down onto the bridge. As soon as he set foot on the ground, he darted towards the Joker, taking out his knife as he quickly approached.

The roar of the jet was deafening and Joker was certain that had been The Batman's goal. Confuse and disorient. Such a tactic wouldn't have worked on the clown himself but his goons were a different story. Joker would have felt sorry for those simpletons had he been capable of such emotions. He cast a quick look back at the dark form before turning his attention to the main attraction.

"Hurm." Joker made an approving noise as Red Hood landed on the concrete of the bridge. Someone was well trained. The clown's head canted to the side as Red Hood charged him with a blade at the ready. It seemed that he wasn't the only one who liked to play with knives.

Gloved hands flexed and with another gesture, three cards slid from the clown's sleeve. The cards were razor sharp and always a staple in his bag of tricks. He hurled the handful of face cards with surprising speed and accuracy. In the other hand he produced his own blade and readied himself to parry any incoming attack.

Batman watched as Jason charged the Joker, the only thing keeping him on task was the sight of the bodies still left ont he bridge with their faces left in a twisted smile. He was not going to let that madman hurt anyone else, and he was going to show Jason the right way to do things. Once the thugs were dealt with, he could bring the Joker down and send him back to Arkham, and take Jason home where he belonged so they could sort things out. But there were still issues to deal with.

All this went through his head as he slammed one of the Jokers goons down onto the roof of a nearby car. He crouched over the man, making sure he was out cold. From across the bridge he heard two men shout "Light him up!" and looked up to see two more thugs with machine guns pointed at him. He leapt up off of the cars roof as they opened fire, encouraging them to track him, and keep stray shots from hitting anyone else.

He landed right in front of them, and they continued to fire. In fact they'd never stopped, which indicated that they were panicked. A soldier, trained to handle a combat situation would know that the longer you held the trigger of an automatic weapon the more the kick of it would cause you to miss. These weren't soldiers, these men weren't trained. They were punks who thought they had nothing to fear just because they had a gun in their hand. He slowly walked forward, and let them think they were unloading a full clip into him, when they were in fact missing wildly. Even if he was part of the JLA, no reason to not use their fear to convince them that automatic weapons fire was pointless. It was likely the last thing they thought before he introduced their faces to the concrete road, and left them there for the cops.

He took a moment to disable the fuses on their fireworks, before turning his attention to the other side of the bridge. In just a moment he could turn his attention toward the Joker and Red Hood. A quick grapple launched him into the air, and then he spread the cloak out behind him. When the men manning the other set of mortars would wake up later, they would remember the large black predatory shadow as it descended upon them, and left them helpless and unconscious.

Jason dodged the Joker's razor cards easily with a quick flip to the side. It was reminiscent of his days as Robin; the days when he'd use acrobatics and basic combat to take down criminals. Now, he used different methods, but the things Bruce taught him were still a big part of his fighting style.

He continued forward and, just before he reached the Joker, jumped high into the air. Jason descended upon the clown, delivering a kick that he was sure (hoped) would hit. Whether it hit or not, he flipped backward and landed on his feet, preparing to spring towards his opponent once again.

The kid seemed to know what he was doing. It was like fighting one of Batman's little pets. The attack came at him rather quickly and try as he might, th kick hit square in the clown's chest. The force from the blow expelled all the air from his lungs with an 'oof' and threw him backwards. His gloved hands scrabbled at the concrete as he slid backwards. The tip of his blade created sparks against the road. The Clown Prince climbed back to his feet with with a few breathless laughs. He fixed those malevolent eyes on Red Hood and brandished the blade at Red Hood's chest. "So glad of you to make it."

"Heee." The clown cracked his neck quickly and squared his shoulders. "I've simply been dying to meet you." Joker moved to the right, his hips rolling slightly to ready his stance for another attack. "You're not so different you and I. A shared history..." The tip flicked up to the red helmet the man was wearing. "A love of sharp objects.." The scars on his face twitched slightly. "Utter disregard for human life." His eyes flickered to the group of Red Hood's henchmen bound and gagged.

Jason's body stiffened when the Joker's words hit his ears. Not so different? Bullshit. He was nothing like that maniac standing in front of him. He didn't kill innocent people; he took out those that cause those people to suffer. He didn't kill for a laugh or for fun. He wouldn't trap a kid in a building, beat him to near death with a crowbar and then blow the building to pieces. He wouldn't paralyze a girl because she was related to the commissioner. He wasn't like him and he sure as hell didn't have to explain himself to him.

His grip on the knife tightened. "A shared history… you have no idea," Jason replied with a snort. "But you'll see soon." He went in for the attack, attempting to push the Joker closer to the edge of the bridge. He had plans, which meant he needed to get him off of the bridge before Batman could intervene.

"Ooooo!" The sound was punctuated by mirthful laughter. The Joker was clearly having the time of his life squaring off with this new adversary. The mask was different and the choice of attire was all wrong but this kid had chops. Hood reminded him of a certain someone. Those empty eyes flickered over to the sound of his henchmen crying out in pain. The Batman was having his fun. "A surprise? I've never been able to keep myself from peeking. Hehehaha!"

When Red Hood charged, Joker did what he did best: Ran. He turned his body and dashed between cars, his maniacal laughter following him. He scrambled over hoods and dead bodies as fast as his long legs would allow. The clown turned and threw several more cards at his adversary before ducking under the guard rail. He was now on the pedestrian walk way that lined both sides of the bridge. The water gurgled below. He slipped into shadows and prepared his next attack. When Red Hood showed that domed red face of his, he'd get a surprise in the form of a weighted rubber chicken.

Batman had finished with the thugs. Their mortars were disabled, the Jokers gas was neutralized, the side of the bridge with Gordon and likely the anti-joker venom was clear, and the mobsters were restrained, but no longer on fire, ready to be picked up.

All the loose ends were tied up, and he was on his way over to the confrontation between Joker and Red Hood. He saw the Joker wing his playing cards at Jason, and before the cards even left the clowns hand, Batman had begun pulling batarangs from his belt. He picked the razor cards out of the air with swift practiced throws and closed on them.

In just a few seconds he would be there, the two of hem could bring Joker down together, and when there was no longer a threat, he could bring Jason home, find out what he had been through and help him deal with what life had done.
