Entry tags:!plot 08: second time's the charm, bruce wayne | batman, diana | wonder woman

Who: Batman and Wonder Woman
Where: JLA Watch Tower
When: Wednesday, June 30th, 2010.
Summary: Batman and Diana discuss the implications of the recent attack from the future. Batman is midly distracted by a blast from the past.

Selina had told him; "When you go around collecting stray child sidekicks, one of them is eventually going to travel back in time to kill you. That's just common knowledge. Can't be avoided." And he was starting to think she had only hit upon the tip of the iceberg when it came to the dangers of adopting sidekicks.

A few days before, Batman had faced the new Red Hood. The man under the mask claimed to be the resurrected Jason Todd. He'd proved he knew their identities, and shown the skills to match his claims. He even provided Batman with a blood stained batarang to be tested. So far everything checked out, and that was part of the reason Batman didn't trust it. He'd brought the the batarang up to the Watch Tower for testing. The Watch Towers labs weren't any more advanced then the Batcave, but they had one advantage the Batcave didn't.

Every where he looked in the cave he saw reminders of the times when Jason was there, and he needed his head clear to work.

The Watch Tower had always been a welcoming play for Diana. When not facing down the dangers of the world or assisting her sisters on Themyscira, Diana could often be found training or, as of late, standing pensively before the great, open windows that overlooked Earth.

The emergence of the future Young Justice had brought a harsh reality upon her shoulders. People of power often times became corrupted, and though she could not see any of the member of the Justice League turning dark, she understood it only took a moment in time to rewrite destiny. Her greatest concern fell upon her, Superman, and Batman and she had yet to speak to any of them.

Until she noticed Batman's presence upon the Watch Tower.

There was little time for her to ever speak with the caped crusader. His time was spent in Gotham, a territory that she honored as his own. She had never once swooped upon the dark and gritty city without his knowledge and she never would. She respected him, his team, and their sacrifices too much to challenge such authority.

The door to the lab opened and Diana took a single step inside, allowing the lab to seal off from the others once more. "Batman," she greeted, knowing her presence would not come as a surprise.

Batman looked up from his screen. When Wonder Woman arrived on the Watchtower he was curious if she would come down to see him, or if he would be left to his own devices. While he was preoccupied by the possibility of Jason, he couldn't will the tests to be finished any faster.

He didn't mind her presence, Diana was one of the few people outside of his tight knit circle he trusted, and whose company he... enjoyed to a certain extent. Given that the last time they spoke outside of a crisis was when he was pretending to be Bruce Wayne, he was pleased with the chance to talk to her as himself.

"Diana. Something I can do for you?"

Diana would not question what he was doing in the Watchtower's lab. There was a certain understanding between them, one that established questions based on actions would be asked if they posed a threat. This was his work and if he wished to talk about it, then he would.

Until then, she would be the one to voice her troubles. "I wanted to discuss the situation with the Young Justice, if you have time. I am...troubled by their future."

Batman turned away from his work to give her his full attention. He cross his arms across his chest and let out a breath. Young Justice had also weighed heavily on his mind.

The possibility that Jason was some how tied into their time travel had occurred to him. And even if it hadn't, the number of times old partners had shown up, older, angrier and more violent, was beginning to worry him.

"Their future is a troubling place. I'm still decoding Damian's information, but they weren't lying about us."

"I did not suspect they were. They were devoted to our destruction, more so than some of our greatest foes." She moved further into the room with only a handful of strides and though her back remained straight, it would be evident to him that this was her most relaxed pose.

"I cannot say I blame them for their efforts. Desperation is a powerful emotion, but were they right to act on it?" she asked, looking straight into his eyes fearlessly. "Could that really be our future?"

"It could, but it also couldn't." Batman met her gaze, standing up, and straightening his back, managing to just match her height.

"Remember Booster Gold came from a future where the Justice League were heroes. Their history doesn't line up, which means the future is mailable."

He turned toward the monitor, leaning against the table.

"They were more then desperate though. The number of people still alive according to Rook's files was incredibly low, they were traumatized, desperate and confused." He glanced back toward the amazon princess.

"Were they right? Not even slightly. With all of their skills, their technology, the ability to travel through time, and all they could think to do was kill." He shook his head slowly.

"They could have warned us, or accepted their fate. Living in the past is a dangerous habit."

Her head canted as she listened intently to him. It was obvious that his words had been the ones she was searching for. A flicker of logic in a muddle of uncertainty.

"Yes, it can be," she agreed with his final words. "But we all do it. For better or for worse." She turned her attention from him as she silently pondered her own history. Many of her Amazonian sisters lived their lives on old rules and outdated ways, and she had done the same for many years before she wandered into the world of men. Not all respect for the past could reflect negatively, but it diverged from a possibly brighter future.

"I wonder what could push any of us to such a dark point. Me, you, Superman...we have devoted our lives to morality. It would take a powerful event for any of us to leave such self-made codes behind."

"They weren't just living in the past, they were ruled by it. Over time, trauma convinced them that the only solution to all problems was a permenant one." Batman put a hand to his chin, and crossed the other over his chest. He couldn't help but think of Red Hood, is that what happened to him? Was dying and coming back too much? He looked back toward Diana.

"It was probably the same for us. Which just proves that we need to be even more watchful. Of Young Justice, of each other, of ourselves."

"Yes, I agree. The best way to protect our futures is to protect one another." To her, there was nothing else that needed to be said. At least not about her own feelings on the matter.

"How do the others feel about the situation?" Diana had yet to visit wit the Young Justice and though she intended to speak with them soon, she knew Batman had at least checked in on them. Especially Damien.

Batman watched her quietly for a moment. He had figured they ought to be more suspicious of each other, more vigilant. He wasn't sure if Diana had meant it that way, but he wasn't going to try and change her view. The League worked because each of them had unique strengths and ideas.

"Spoiler has undergone a retirement of sorts, likely a temporary one, but that is probably for the best. Blue Beetle and Toyman are also likely to take time off from heroics. I'm not sure if Young Justice will continue as is."

"Impulse is Impulse, Robin seems unsettled, which will likely to effect his relationship with Spoiler, that may be for the best too. Romance tends to take ones focus off the mission. Rook I'm not sure about, he's hard to read, I'll have to check with Nightwing." In truth, Batman hadn't spoken to anyone involved, it didn't mean he hadn't checked on them in his own way.

It was for the best that much of Young Justice would remove themselves from the field. When the time was right, they would all return, but they each needed time to recover from the potential fate they all faced. She could only imagine the difficulty they faced in comparison to her own concern.

"They will all recover, though the strain in all of their relationships may never fully be forgotten. But such a challenge could also establish a strength we have not seen from the young group."

Batman nodded silently. Times like this made him unsure if it was the wisest of ideas to allow children to join the crusade, but half of them had powers or training of thier own, and if they didn't try to teach them and guide them some one with a dangerous purpose in mind likely would.

"I don't doubt Rook and Batgirl will hold up. Terra and Impulse.will warrant observation. Then again, Impulse always warrants observation. It might be time to consider reorganizing the younger teams." He turned from the computer and stood, figuring that his obsessing over test results didn't help and Diana deserved his full attention.

"Have you talked to any of the others about this yet?"

"No," she responded. "We should address it as a whole soon, but I wanted your opinion on the situation. You and your team encountered them more than any of us." Yes, she had just referred to the others members in Gotham as a team. The way they worked together, there could be no other word for it. Whether he approved of such a statement or not did not matter to her.

"You and I have no always seen eye to eye, but your words have helped ease my mind," she admitted after a silent moment. It was her way of relaying her gratitude. "Should I leave you to your tests?"

Batman crossed his arms over his chest. Whether he approved or disapproved of her referring to the heroes in Gotham as a team, he didn't show it.

"Only if you have more important things to do." He had no issue working alone, at least most of the time. Amongst the JLA, he probably appreciated Diana's company more then most.

"It's good that your island is almost recovered. It'd be good to have someone with your skills who can lend their full attention to any crisis that pop up."
