A CHALLENGE should you choose to accept it:
I was encouraged to join this community and since it's a mix comminity, I feel like mixing it up a bit! Let's get some debating to go along with the sharing, shall we?

Post your TOP FIVE all-time favorite covers, and explain why they're your favorites.

MY LIST:
Got To Get You Into My Life - Earth, Wind & Fire [Original: The Beatles]
I remember listening to this song as I grew up, but it shocked the hell out of me when I discovered it was originally a Beatles song. This is called taking a song and making it your own. Rumor has it that Paul McCartney wrote this in the style of 50s/60s soul tracks from the Stax Record label, but he fell a little short. EWF's vocal harmony and poppy-er funk sound with the instruments really rounded out the song. I think it's better than the original.

Feeling Good - Muse [Original: Gilbert Price]
Ah, yes. A Broadway track from The Roar of the Greasepaint—the Smell of the Crowd. Nina Simone's arrangement is the one most people cover. I love this band and their cover sounded other-worldly with a little bit of edge. If you've seen my movie Seven Pounds with Will Smith, this song is played at a crucial part in the film and it fits beautifully. I may or may not be responsible for its inclusion. ;)

Stronger - 30 Seconds to Mars [Original: Kanye West/Daft Punk]
Holy shit. Talk about ambition. But if there's anyone who's willing to think outside the box and say "Fuck you" to the impossible, it's my great friend Jared Leto. I was so impressed when I heard this. It's a radio rip, but still sounds amazing. Some creative liberties, but it's got a slow, sexy tempo (I might have given a lapdance to it once) and the vocals are downright seductive. The guitar is used in such a creative way. The synths give it that sexy edge. The drums power through the track. Brilliant musicianship by Shannon, Tomo and Jared all around. Don't act like I never told ya.

Creep - Damien Rice [Original: Radiohead]
Anything Damien Rice does acoustically, automatically has that romantic feel to it. It's his voice that does it, really. But with this particular song, it gives it a little bit of an eerie feel. A good eerie. If that makes any sense. A little dreamy. I think he's got a good voice to cover Thom Yorke's range.

Word Up! - KoRn [Original: Cameo]
My mom LOVED Cameo when I was growing up. She'd partied with a few of them when she was younger since they were all club goers. This song was played in my house a lot. I became a big fan of KoRn after I got into the business and caught a show of theirs in LA. So imagine my surprise and absolute fucking delight when they covered this baby. Very well done, but it just rocks a little harder. I love it. Unexpected and refreshing.

And some HONORABLE MENTIONS (it's my challenge, I can stack the deck if I want to!):
Darling Nikki - Foo Fighters [Original: Prince]
Prince is a friend of mine. Has been for a while now. He wasn't a big fan of FF covering the song, but I am. Dave Grohl's got a great voice. And his screaming an moaning is... umm...amazing. For example, see 1:13-1:23. Ungh. Thanks, Dave. Now I need is a cigarette.

No Ordinary Love - Deftones [Original: Sade]
The original is damn sexy. This version is still lapdance worthy. The bassline on this song is a little richer and a little heavier. Chino Moreno's voice is a COMPLETE departure from Sade's voice, but it still fits well. This is where the dream pop meets the alt-metal styling. Not too much. Just a little bit.

20th Century Boy - Placebo [Original: T-Rex]
Hooray for Glam! This one wound up in the film Velvet Goldmine and appropriately so. The band was featured in the movie and I think Placebo is pretty glam sans glitter. THESE DAYS. Brian Molko grabbed my ass at a party once. He's short, but sexy. So I let it slide. Brandon "Cheats McCheater" Flowers, this T-Rex cover is for you.

These are the ones that I feel are actually better than the original. Isn't that always how it works with epic covers?

Matt Weddle (Obadiah Parker) - Hey Ya
Michael Franti and Spearhead - What I Got
Lifehouse - Somewhere Only We Know
Jonathan Coulton - Baby Got Back
Bowling For Soup - London Bridge

I also forgot to explain. Here goes.

1. Hey Ya: This interpretation makes the song sound so sad. It's crazy how an acoustic guitar and some soul can change a song without changing a single word.

2. What I Got: Yes, they changed the words, but I like it. It's almost like a part two version of the song, and is very much paying homage to Sublime and Brad. The first version is obviously their jam, but then this cover version just sounds a lot happier.

3. Somewhere Only We Know: I was convinced that they originally recorded this song, it's so good. And to this day I will always say that they really should've.

4. Baby Got Back: Alright this just makes me laugh so hard because it sounds like a serious song but...it's a song about asses. Haha.

5. London Bridge: Again, better than the original. I think my favorite is how they keep the "urrbody" intact.

I'd elaborate more but I just woke up and I'm kind of a numbskull when that happens.

This was tough! But let me try...

Rainbow Connection - Jason Mraz (Kermit The Frog)
Have A Cigar - Foo Fighters (Pink Floyd)
Grow Old With Me - The Postal Service (John Lennon)
Working Class Hero - Green Day (John Lennon)
This Charming Man - Death Cab For Cutie (The Smiths)

And actually these two songs would have been on my favorite covers, but iTunes ate all of my Jonas Brothers music and I'm in Puerto Rico, so I don't have my cds to reupload. So I'll give you YouTube links instead.

Year 3000 - Jonas Brothers (Busted)
I Wanna Be Like You - Jonas Brothers (Jungle Book)

Oh, Brandon is so smart. I realized that I forgot to explain why they're my favorites. Here we go.

1.) Rainbow Connection: First of all, this is one of my favorite songs of all time, cover or not. The lyrics are beautiful. Second, I think Jason Mraz makes everything perfect. The fastest way to my heart (and to win an argument) is to send me a Mraz song. He's my favorite musician of all time. Listening to this song is so calming and it can make me happy in seconds.

2.) Have A Cigar: I like the Pink Floyd version better, but the Foo Fights gave their best effort. It's a solid cover and it's got a lot of feeling. You can tell that they're fans.

3.) Grow Old With Me: I love everything that has to do with John Lennon. But beyond that, the Postal Service is brilliant and this cover shows off their talent. The vocals are incredible and it has this cold, yet loving feel to it. I don't know how to describe it but I hope you like it as much as I do.

4.) Working Class Hero: Same thing with John Lennon. The man is brilliant. So is Green Day. When they come together, it's super brilliant haha. But really, this song has so much feeling and heart. The video is incredibly sad and it brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. Plus, keeping John's voice at the end was such a great move.

5.) This Charming Man: I love the lyrics to this song. Morrissey is an incredible song writer. And, I really like Ben Gibbard, if you couldn't tell, since there are two covers of his on this list.

And now for the Bonus Songs. Here's my very simple explanation: Jonas Brothers are my favorite band and anything they touch is gold in my mind.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah I know, everybody knows it and everybody loves it, but it's still very magical.
David Bowie - Sorrow
Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind
U2 - Helter Skelter
AND AND AND I couldn't pick just one from Morrissey so you get two. Moon River and Cosmic Dancer.

Oh, no. And I missed the part where I explain why they're my favorites. Here we go:

Hallelujah - Actually, this probably doesn't even need an explanation. It's just a beautiful rendition of this song. His voice is perfect for it, and he sounds almost haunting.

Sorrow - To date, I still haven't heard the original of this song. Hearing it though was the first time I ever realized what a true crooner Bowie is. He'd done this song just after Ziggy Stardust so it was a really interesting turn to hear all that style up against something like this. It shows that he can tackle basically anything he puts his mind to.

Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys are fantastic at taking any song in the world and making it dancey. I don't really know why I love this cover so much. I'm a fan of anyone who covers a song and completely makes it their own, so to turn an old Elvis song into this just blows my mind.

Helter Skelter - This was the opening song to Rattle And Hum, and that entire film is really powerful. That was U2 at their absolute best and this is one of my favorite Beatles songs anyway, so they won my heart really easily.

Moon River & Cosmic Dancer - Morrissey was my first real idol, and my parents had always really loved the song Moon River, so my young teenage mind thought it was so cool that he'd covered something that resonated closely with my family. With Cosmic Dancer, I'm also a very big T. Rex fan and adore this song. It makes me happy when my favorites cover my favorites.

1. 'That's Not My Name' - Dizzee Rascal. [Original: Ting Tings.] I actually like this more than the original; he really makes it his own, even changes the message behind the song, I think.

2. 'Hit me Baby one More Time' - Travis. [Original: Britney Spears] This version actually gives me shivers. I think this really shows how important the musical and personal interpretation of a song is; a song is not necessarily a good song in its own right, it's the creative process that turns it into one, if you know what I mean.

3. 'Sexy Back - Poison. [Original: Justin Timberlake) I don't think this even needs an explanation - it actually sounds like a sexy song this way, or maybe I'm just fucked up.

4. 'Billie Jean' - Chris Cornell. [Original: Michael Jackson] I was actually introduced to this arrangment through the X-Factor (I think Cowell used it on American Idol as well) and although the kids performance was great, since Chris Cornell actually arranged it, it seems more logical to share his version. I know some people really hate it, it must be like marmite or something. I find it really haunting, I think it really brings the lyrics to life.

5. 'Fluorescent Adolescent' - Kate Nash. [Original: Arctic Monkeys] I just love this, it makes me smile.

1. 'Tainted Love' - Marilyn Manson [Original: Gloria Jones] This has to be my all-time favorite cover. Hands down. Manson is so genius at choosing songs to cover and then twisting them to make it all his own. I mean, you tell me who else could take a song from the 60s and turn it into a goth thug track.

2. 'Leaving on a Jet Plane' - Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies [Original: John Denver] I like this one just because it's fun. I love punk music and punk covers were always fun to do back in the day. Plus, it's cool that Fat Mike and guys from Lagwagon and Foo Fighters got together to cover a bunch of random songs.

3. 'Enter Sandman' - Apocalyptica [Original: Metallica] Three cellos playing metal. How much crazier can you get? They make it all their own by simply playing the hell out of a Metallica song on classical instruments.

4. 'Fear of the Dark' - Fightstar [Original: Iron Maiden] I don't normally like many Maiden covers. Not even the Avenged Sevenfold version. It was a great thing to be asked to record a cover for the Maiden Heaven tribute by Kerrang, but I feel like no one can even come close to being as good as the original. But I think Fightstar did a phenomenal job on their cover. It sounds like Fightstar, while at the same time retaining that epic Iron Maiden quality.

5. 'Walk' - Avenged Sevenfold [Original: Pantera] You know I couldn't leave without shamelessly plugging my own band, right? I really love playing this live, though. Pantera has always been on my list of favorite bands so I love this cover not because it's my version but because every time we play it I feel like we're giving respect and tribute to a great band and a great group of musicians who have come before us.
