Tom can’t help regretting the change even as he acknowledges that he desperately needed it.

Because there are things he doesn’t miss: emergency calls in the middle of the night; the stress and the risks; clingy, egocentric girlfriends who can’t understand that he places the security of the country above them.

When the shot rings through the microphone, time stops for a second. It’s deafeningly close, and Harry knows that it’s found a target.

An eternity later, there is the dull thud of a body hitting the ground, and Harry can only hope that the bullet hasn’t hit anything vital, that they can reach Adam before it’s too late. He doesn’t want to tell Wes his father’s dead, not so soon after Fiona.

Harry has lost far too many good agents recently, to the point where he sometimes wonder how he managed to reach fifty with barely a scar on him.
