Hmm. I'm not finding a couple of the blog posts I'd spotted yesterday, that aren't related to the adult privs checklist but were about child agency and the concept that kids, acting like kids, in public, is something the public should just deal with--kids are people, and age-appropriate behavior isn't something that should be kept out of sight of nonparents.

Some of these have fascinating comment threads. And by "fascinating," I mean "soaked in privilege and offensive as hell."

Related but not necessarily connected posts:
Nov 3, Noble Savage: On Child Hate and Feminism "Participating in child-bashing is participating in the oppression of a vulnerable group. … admitting that motherhood went from overrated to undervalued in 40 years flat isn’t something many of us want to acknowledge."

Oct 23, Look Left of the Pleiades: People who dance between tables "Having a need for age-specific support should not make anyone any less human."

Apr 23, Have A Lovely Time: I'm sorry, does my children's presence offend you? "HOW do you cope when your arrival leads to an immediate and sharp intake of breath from the other customers?"

Aug 8, Syracuse.com opinion blog: Discrimination against special needs is unacceptable "They had just as much a right to patronize that restaurant as anyone else. They deserved to be welcomed with respect and kindness. This was not the case." (Does not mention whether younger children without disabilities would be equally accepted.)

Adult Privilege Sound-off:
Nov 24, Dr. Helen: Your right to bring your screaming child on a plane ends where the rest of our ears begin. "If a kid does not understand how to act in certain settings, teach him or her or don't put them in that setting until they are older. The world will be a better (and quieter) place."

Nov 24, Tim Cavanaugh at Reason: No Child's Left Behind "here is (very unscientific) evidence that spanking is poised for a comeback" (With special bonus racism in the comments!)

April 8, Guardian: There comes a time when you want to live without children "To buy a property in the village, you have to be 45-plus with no dependent family in tow, and you must sign a contract agreeing not to sell property on to those with children."

Adult Privilege Linkspam

I may or may not find time to make a coherent post about this anytime soon. This one's important to me; the way we treat children in this country ranges from atrocity to tragedy. But it's late; I have to be up in five and a half hours (because, heh, one of my kids does not mesh well with public school). As a placeholder, have some linkspam:

Nov 16 @ Shut Up, Sit Down: Adult Privilege Checklist
Reading a post by Elena Perez at California NOW made me think about privilege checklists (like the Male Privilege Checklist and the White Privilege Checklist, for example) and I came to the realisation that, as yet, nobody had written an adult privilege checklist. So with some help from my good friend Jenny, using some of Elena Perez’s ideas from the aforementioned post, I set about writing the Adult Privilege Checklist.
Background; older posts:
April 13, Mothers For Women's Lib: You’ll never truly be “child free”

Oct 22, Raising My Boychick: Dancing between the tables: on the personhood of children

Nov 11, California NOW: Feminist Parenting: The Larger Picture

Nov 4, Left of the Pleiades: Dear Kate Harding

Reactions:
[info - personal] naraht: Adult privilege

[info - personal] hl: The Opression of Chilhood. In which I try for emotionless and hard analysis (and fail)

[info - personal] sqbr: Intersections of youth and other aspects of the kyriarchy

Saraspeaking: Mind. Blown.

[info - personal] flourish: Adult Privilege

Bradford Pear Tree Love

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

These are more pics across Greenbelt Lake and down the southwest branch I took a month ago. See those dark green trees with a touch of burgundy in the center here? Those are Bradford pear trees. And they still had some pretty leaves hanging on this weekend--I took some pics I'll show you later.

Let me just write a little encomium to Bradford pears, because I've come to love this tree a lot. In the spring it's one of the first trees to flower with clouds of white blooms. It's used as a total utility tree around here and planted all along the highways, so there are stretches along the Beltway that are just gorgeous in the spring. One of my spring observances is to make it a point to drive through the Ivy Lane Office Park and the Greenway Shopping Center parking lot--names that ring full of the romance of spring, right?--they are so full of these trees. Last year, while I was in the parking lot, some flurries fell while their blooms were already out, and it was wonderful to see white petals and snowflakes falling together.
More nattering about trees and more pics . . . )

Lazy day

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Walked Juno, did 6 loads laundry, took Juno to the vet (time for a vaccine & also more heartworm med), and read a couple of novels. Now cooking beets (for me)and radishes (for SO) for dinner. Maybe will also make the little bit of broccoli; we've had the beans-and-greens 3 days running, so even though there's still lots, time for a break from those. Also have leftover baked chicken and noodles.

So, yeah. Basically a lazy day, in which no work for either teaching or school got done. I didn't even check those email accounts.

Have some fic to edit, and am gradually developing an idea for my Yuletide fic. Oh, and thanks to [info]cruisedirector for the AO3 invite - of course now I have tons to upload, but that's the way it goes.

Scott's back at work today. He recovered enough yesterday to transport Cordelia to Daisies, so I'm hopeful that all is well. We may never know what caused the problem.

Cordelia asked me not to stay for the Daisies meeting. That was hard (but necessary). Scott and I went home and watched TV for about fifty minutes. I imagine Scott got some amusement out of watching me make myself wait patiently for the right time to put my coat on and head for the car again. Part of me wanted to go back immediately so as not to be late picking Cordelia up.

I asked the psychiatrist today about borrowing her light box. There's a waiting list, so it will be two or three weeks before I get my turn. I'm hopeful that it will be helpful this year since I've been wanting light.

The pain levels from my leg are down. Sitting on the couch still hurts, but many other things no longer do or do at a level that's ignorable. I'm continuing the PT exercises and hoping that the improvement continues. Scott's starting to look at replacement couches, but I'm still hoping we won't need to go that far.

Meanwhile, on the Internet…

Read online discussion comments, wrote a recommendation, taught two classes, met w/ two different students re: research paper, revised lecture, wrote up lesson plans for all next week, read two chapters in source reader, wrote up two sets of discussion questions, dealt w/ both work and student email, checked on LIS classes' readings/assignments/due dates (some reading & discussion to do this week and should work on last big assignment).

It's now 4 pm, I'm incredibly stiff and sore from yesterday's gardening, and I'm gonna go home and drink tea and edit ficlets (or else read Yuletide canon). *nods firmly* I can write a quiz and another recommendation at home later this week, also grade a couple of reviews and do a last bit of reading for one of the classes I'm teaching. So yeah. Outta here...

Wolftrap, Virginia: RotK Symphony, Fri & Sat 9/10- 9/11/2010

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
OK, my dear Hobbit Posse, the tickets for RotK in September went on sale this past Saturday, and the center front orchestra seats are already sold out for Saturday night 9/11. We can still get side front orchestra seats, but I wouldn't wait past tomorrow to try to get those.

We can get much better seats for Friday night 9/10--they've only sold through the first 2 rows of center front orchestra, and row CC is still open, which may actually be a little too close, so we have a little more time to get tickets if choosing Friday--I'm keeping my eye on it.

So I'm emailing with some folks right now about who can't make Friday or Saturday. Let me know your preferences here, so we can make plans for getting tickets together or near each other on the same night. Info on the performance is here. There will probably be tickets available close to the concert date, as I got tickets the last 2 years much closer to the date, but you just wouldn't be sitting with us and as close.

The guest apartment in my building is available for rent that weekend if a few folks are coming from out of town and we need it.

Scott is sick. He went to UHS after throwing up at work and was told that it's too soon to know what's wrong. We might still be lucky and have it be a rapidly passing stomach bug. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

That probably means no Daisies tonight. I can't see dragging Scott out for the transportation. I wish, once again, that I could drive.

Illness in the house leaves me worried about my Yuletide fic (among all the other worries). I do at least have a completed draft. It's unbeta'd as of yet, but it's my third draft. I mainly worry that I'll be too sick to post when the archive finally does open. Well, that, and I worry about coming up with a title.

Illness in the house also has me fretting about the busy second half of the week. Cordelia is heavily invested in our plans coming to fruition. I hate the thought of disappointing her (and of having all three of us stuck in the house with no relief for five days!). Currently, we plan to have Thanksgiving with Scott's parents. Cordelia will spend Thursday night with her cousins. Friday is the family birthday party for our niece, and Scott and I will go up after he gets off work to attend and to retrieve Cordelia. Saturday is a potluck at [info]jss's place.

Meta meta meta on the table table table: Naming your Muses!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Found on DW's Metafandom comm, An entry about naming muses and nicknaming fics, I have decided to open a discussion about the subject here on IJ.

Do y'all name your muses? Do you have nicknames for your fics?

And stuff!! )

So I am using this one because it is fun. :3 :3 ;3

Dear Muses,

Now that I'm starting on the Zero Princess Saga/Void Space Saga/Whatever the hell you want to call this series, Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, turn this into Viceroyverse done Kairi/Rinoa Style.

Please. I don't care how well it works, I don't care that it works on a multitude of levels. I don't care if it'd be cute (and about a quarter as creepy as Quistis/Kairi is!). I don't care if it makes a lot more sense than any other Kairi pairing in existence, Sora/Kairi included. But the Nonsense of Sora/Kairi is another show rant. Aaaanyway, no one would read it.

Even if it is a really good idea--

No. No. If you try and steer it in that direction, and we know that the one-sided Rinoa/Kairi in Braceletverse is enough, I will turn this brain around and write...umm...

I WILL MAKE US WRITE MPREG. SORA/KAIRI MPREG. HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES!?

No love,
Jordi.

Worked in the yard for 3+ hours today; raked (w/ SO's help) 10 bags of leaves, also planted about 100 bulbs (daffodils, crocuses, iris). Am now tired and sore. OTOH, I slept in till almost 9, so I'm less tired than I might be.

Have also talked with my mom, and am about to go start cooking soup and chicken. SO is walking Juno with the neighbors and Scruffy. Was too brain-dead to work on resume etc., but maybe will manage a bit after dinner, and also plan to read for tomorrow's class.

Holiday recipe links

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
The first two need to be made about 3 days ahead; I'm not doing the pickled peaches for Thanksgiving this year, but I'll make the cranberry relish tomorrow. Not making pumpkin pie this year either although I expect it will be around, just made by someone else.

And now, for something completely different

1. I feel behind on fandom stuff, not least my f-lists. If you feel neglected, you're not imagining it.

2. Hello, sexism. And yet I'm totally tempted to install o_O

3. I don't need to run a ½-marathon - it's much more fun to read about ilanarama's marathons!

4. Without being able to say something intelligent about it, I'm extremely fascinated by the fact that I share virtual culture with people whose meatspace culture I don't share. Case in point: 100 Greatest Internet Videos In 3 Minutes. The music is obnoxious as hell, and I don't know all the clips. But the ones I do know are part of an internet culture I share with people from all over the world, but who's not a part of my meatspace culture. Know what I mean? Well, I'm fascinated.

5. I'm also endlessly fascinated with people who can do things with their bodies that I could never hope to do. Point: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1903600

IJ economics

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
According to my count of [info]announcements announcements [sic], InsaneJournal has had seven account sales in 2009 (the seventh was just announced).

I find that troubling, but am strangely adverse to mentioning it - because, I guess, I still feel grateful [info]squeaky was so welcoming to us LJ refugees in 2007. At any rate, I get the impression IJ economics are either unstable, or [info]squeaky wants a bigger personal profit out of the site. Which I can't say I blame him for; we all would like to be paid for our work. But I am questionable about the future of IJ.

PWNED

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Finished the pathfinder, both paper and web versions, and submitted 4 hours before deadline. *does happy dance* Only one more major assignment, plus a final exam, for the two LIS classes, if I remember correctly. Will double-check tomorrow. Possibly a minor thing or two as well, not sure.

Also today took SO out to lunch, went to four stores for grocery and other shopping, and made a white-bean-and-greens dish that turned out pretty well (which is good since there's like 3 or 4 more meals' worth!). Watched part of ST:XI during dinner, SO's choice.

Tomorrow: walk Juno (hopefully) and/or do some yard work, work on resume and job apps, cook for the first half of the week, talk to maternal unit, and do some reading for classes.

Other things to do over the next week: start writing holiday letter/cards, make a lot of cranberry bread, possibly bake regular bread, write/edit some fic, work on last big LIS assignment, go to the art museum, cook a lot, clean the house, and do the last course preps for the term. I was really really clever and managed to schedule things so that I don't have any grading of substance to do over Thanksgiving, go me!

The windy rambly thoughts of Xie

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So, I've been working on Directions today.... it's so good to feel the fic flowing again. :)

I am going to try to finish it this weekend and send it for beta, although I may need next weekend to get it done. I should probably wait until after the Thanksgiving weekend to post it, shouldn't I?

In other news, I have bunnies for a Xena/Gabrielle fic, a Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer fic, and a Michael/Ben fic, and NO ONE but me really wants to read any of those things. It makes me sad, yo.

Although I also have a Drew/Emmett bunny and I know at least Travis likes to read those!

In today's "Activism: Ur Doin It Wrong" department, we have accusations that slurs against pagan rituals are racist. Set aside, for the moment, that said slurs don't actually exist. That... give some insight into the mind of the commenter, but isn't, in fact, relevant.

What's relevant is that she thinks Wicca's being insulted, and she's "calling" the supposed insulter on her "racism." (In a community about public transportation. So, um, more than rather severely off-topic all around.)

I don't have an icon that's halfway between "facepalm" and "headdesk." (And I don't want one; that would mean I expect to find *more* stuff like this to post about. Which I'd really rather not.)

Oh, and the comment threads hit Godwin's law, ablism, classism and childfreekiness. And NEVAR AGAIN TEH BURNING TIEMS! A glory of fucktupitude all around.

(I got this from [info - livejournal.com] dot_pagan_snark, and it's been on [info - livejournal.com] stupid_free, so apologies to people who already know about it. Sharin' the pain, folks; sharin' the pain.)

She is too fond of books

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Hi, my name's elf, and I have a reading problem.

When most people say "reading problem," they mean "the letters look blurry to me" or "I've been assigned more pages than human eyeballs can absorb this weekend" or "ack, my comprehension of Russian is too low for me to get the right concepts out of this physics paper." It almost never means "I think I've been neglecting other parts of my life for reading."

Because reading isn't considered a dangerous addiction. It has no physical side-effects. It doesn't make the mind slow or incompetent. At no point, in the throes of reading, is one incapable of driving or performing surgery, should one's skills go in those directions. (Well, save for the "must put book down" part. However, after that immediate shift in awareness, one's reflexes and attention are both available to whatever tasks might be at hand.)

And it's not expensive. Nobody sells off his car and formal clothes to get books. Nobody hocks her wedding jewelry. Books--really good books--are available everywhere at prices ranging from "cheap" to "free." And the internet hasn't made that any less true. Entertaining content, informative & educational content, useful, delightful, important content, is free by the terabyte.

And oooh, I want to read it ALL.

I read a lot. I could read a lot more. )
