Merry Smutmas, [info]tarie!

To: [info]tarie
From: [info]midnitemarauder

Title: Rise From the Ashes
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Teddy/Cedric (Cedric/Roger Davies, reference to Cedric/Cho)
Disclaimer: Property of JK Rowling and Co. I merely play for no profit whatsoever.
Summary: Muggles have an old saying: "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it." Teddy never quite grasped the meaning, until he made a wish of his own.
Warnings: Under 17s engaging in sexual relations.
Author's notes: Merry Smutmas, Tarie! You asked for "a little bit of plot", and by that standard, I went a teeny *cough* bit overboard, but this pairing jumped out at me right from the start and I couldn't resist. Much love and gratitude to my betas for their advice and encouragement. Titles nicked from Vienna Teng's "Eric's Song".

GAHHHHHH I can't wait to read this but I have to go to work. Damn you, The Man! *shakes fist*

Thank you so much for this in advance; the anticipation is killing me! I'm so excited you chose to write the strangest pairing I asked for! XD

That was quite a feat of plotting! I couldn't imagine how you were going to get them together. I liked how you stayed committed to the universe you were creating, sticking with the magical premises.

Oh, that was excellent. I really loved your characterizations -- I loved how boyish they were and how wonderfully it fit with how I see them in my head. I probably could have handled an unhappy ending, just because I was so enthralled by the universe you'd created here. The happier ending, though, definitely rocked. Great, all around great.

I'm so happy I read this. Seriously, it's ten am and my day has been made. [info]tarie is lucky to have gotten you, mystery author. ♥

This was fantastic! All this Teddy fic is warming my heart. :-D LOL and I LOVE that you chose this pairing. I know that something I put in my requests was "Teddy/anyone (do not underestimate the viability of time travel)" and so I'm happy that someone cracked that one open even if it wasn't for me! Nice plotting, nice story, nice nice nice.

What a fabulous story! The characterizations and emotions rang really true, and the complications of the plot worked so well. There's always hope, isn't there?

What a beautifully crafted story - full of well wrought characters and PLOT and twists and turns.

Absolutely wow. I'll be carrying around Cedric, and Teddy and Lupin in my head for days to come.

Days at the very least.

I'm not a huge fan of the new generation, but when I learned about this I just had to read it! It definitely did not disappoint. I loved the interaction between Teddy and pretty much everyone. I also really loved Rodger Davies and Cedric's interactions as well. Plus the dystopia was very very cool. Great Job, mystery writer. ^_^

Oh, very, very well done! :D

I adore the Teddy-Remus scenes. Got me all teary-eyed reading about the father and son reunion. I love the glimpses you showed us of what was changed, what could have been, and what happened as a result of Teddy's time travelling.

I really like your Teddy. He's a boy who's trying to do the right thing, but then again, who can resist the temptation of meeting the father he has never known? I'm glad he got to meet Remus. And Cedric... what a lovely characterisation of him as well! I fell in love with your Cedric since the first moment of him eavesdropping as a portrait ;)

There's so much I love about this fic -- Dumbledore, little hints of Snape, references to the trio as sprogs, a more mature but definitely still Gryffindorish Harry, a freed Sirius, just to name a few.

Thanks for a wonderful read, Mystery Author!

OMFG! OMFGOMFGOMFGOMFGOMFG!!!

I think this is my absolute favourite fic of all the fests so far!

I was actually scanning the postings for some H/D and did a double-take when I read your pairing. Then I was like, 'okay, I gotta check this out and see how the author manages to do that' So, I started to read strictly out of curiosity, fully expecting to read some of it and then set it aside until some other time because I really did want to read some H/D. But I couldn't stop reading it. Not for a second. you had me hooked from the start and just kept reeling me in with each paragraph.

I really did NOT expect to fall in love with this story when I started it. But wow, I totally did.

I had a lump in my throat throughout all the Teddy/Cedric scenes because all I could think was 'he's gonna die. OMG, Teddy loves him and he's gonna die, and Teddy knows and can't do shit about it.' And Cedric was such an incredibly likable character here. I didn't want to lose him!

Oh, and I love, love, LOVE your Teddy, by the way. You've crafted such a beautiful 3-dimensional being out of him. And the scene between him and Remus. So beautiful, so heartbreaking.

This was just such a lovely story. It amused me, it titillated me, it broke my heart, and it put it all back together again for a truly satisfying conclusion.

♥

BRAVO, mystery writer!

I can't wait to find out who you are, so I can stalk you hunt down more of your fic. If this one is any indication, you got some mad writin' skillz.

Your Teddy is amazing, such a well rounded character. I like the paradoxes that the time-travel causes, and that the Marauders believe Teddy as soon as they see the map.

I also kinda like the ending, because now the possibilities are endless and we can hope for the best. I also think that a 'happily ever after' would have ruined the story because of the conventional ending, which doesn't fit the unconventional storyline.

Very, very good fic!

Oh, oh! A LONG plotty story in which Cedric lives! *does jig of joy* Not sure who you are, or if you know me from adam, but when the reveals come, I plan to put this on my Cedric's recs page, if you don't mind. Also, choosing "Eric's Song" for the titles?! I loved it. I already associate that song with Cedric (albeit for different reasons and a different pairing, nonetheless) ... I'm not really familiar with Teddy in fanon, but I liked how you handled him here, and his desires as an orphan, which would be both similar to and different from Harry's. I also liked that you didn't run away from the consequences of time travel.

Someone above was asking for a sequel, and I, too, would be curious to see "what came next" if you had any interest in continuing. Does Teddy stay there? What other changes happen? Are there any consequences to him? DOES Lupin marry Tonks? I got a hint here of Sirius/Remus vibes, or I may just have read into it. But what would happen if Teddy isn't born in this time line? What would happen if he is? How will Cedric's father respond to his son's boyfriend? Lupin accepted it fairly easily, but Remus already lives with the consequences of social ostracism. What is the attitude of the wizarding world in general? Similar to larger Britain? More conservative? Amos seems very concerned with "appearances."

So yeah, not like I'm trying to tempt you or anything. ha! There's just not been a lot of fiction lately that features Cedric. Not surprisingly, perhaps, but I miss the boy. :-( So yeah. *lure, lure*

There are a number of smaller things I liked too. How Teddy seems to have a bit of a boy-crush on Cedric from the beginning that develops into more, despite what he knows. The easy use of British slang. Not sure if you ARE British, in which case that's a silly compliment (g), but there are loads of American/Canadian (other) writers in HP. I saw one "guys" in there (which may have been intentional, as I know the word has crossed the pond, if it's not common). That made me wonder, but the rest of it seemed very good and natural. (Like I said, silly compliment if you are British, but otherwise...)

I do have one suggestions for if/when you reform for posting elsewhere ... would it be possible to indicate the *year* beside the title of the prologue and again beside the first chapter. I was confused for a bit as to just how old Teddy was there for a while. I did eventually figure it out, but without an immediate hint, I sorta assumed that Chapter 1 took place in the same year as the prologue, where he'd be a 5th year. I was also a bit confused about whether he WAS a 6th or 7th year, since he seems to be in his NEWT year but is still a prefect, and I understood that only 5th and 6th years were prefects, while the Head Boy and Head Girl were 7th years. (Maybe because the 7th years are legally adults?) Anyway, that one issue of time tripped me up, so I thought I'd mention it, but really, I SO enjoyed this, I hope you don't mind the suggestion. :-)

THIS CANNOT BE DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

This was absolutely breathtakingly amazing. You touched on SO MANY SUBJECTS and got inside SO MANY CHARACTER'S HEADS and it was just this amazing incredible journey.... oh, please say you are thinking about a sequel of some sort? I want to know what happens in a ridiculous way... what impact does Cedric surviving have? And Sirius being free? He should probably not ever have to die now, correct? And what happens, what happens? DOES HE EVER MAKE THINGS RIGHT??? LIKE, GO BACK IN TIME AGAIN AND OBLIVIATE CEDRIC AND HIS FATHER??? AAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!! *is tortured*

I enjoyed this fic so much. I came to it by a rec over on LJ by anathema91, but I actually first heard about it because some friends were saying in a chat, "Teddy/Cedric? What a weird pairing, I don't get it!" And do you know how hard I am going to rec this fic in their faces??? This was so beautiful and well done and so full of imagery and I just loved your characterization of Teddy SO MUCH. I wish I had gotten to see him seeing his mom for the first time. I just want to see everything... GUH. *dies*

I agree with anathema91. Favorite fic of any fest yet. ♥

I don't know if I've ever seen an fanfic author take on so many aspects so successfully in a fic of this length. From characterization, to backstory, to plot, to sexual discovery, to relationships, to more plot, to magic and magical theory—this is an immensely complex text, yet it manages to flow so smoothly. That's a real feat.

I love how you intertwined canon with the story's plot, weaving in and out of events and mentioning items/people/places that we're all familiar with. It gives the story context, and provides a level of implicit backstory—which gives more room to character/relationship development and also makes deviations from the story we know that much more important. The story must have taken some skill to plot. I wish that we knew more about what happens afterwards, how the story ends; I wish we knew what happens to the alternate dystopia, or what happened there, how things came to be that way, where Snape's allegiances were. I hardly think I'm the only reader anxious for more in that regard. ^_^ Nonetheless I am amazed by how much you managed to fit in, and how seamless the various pieces all fit together.

It's also so nice to see a fresh take on sexual discovery like Teddy and Cedric go through here. I get so sick of labels, of panic of bisexual/homosexual feelings—even though both have their place, of course—and I loved that these boys took it in stride. Their acts and feelings were still a big deal, but they came with a different set of problems. It felt very natural to me, and made their relationship shine—they were both people, the relationship felt real and meaningful and lifelike.

Truly, I am impressed. Nice work, anonymous author, and lucky Tarie for receiving such a gem. The care that went into this fic (or that I assume must have gone into it, at least) amazes me, and the final product is wonderful and enjoyable. I'm glad I had the chance to read it.

Oh dear, this is magnificent! I love so many things about this. Magic having it's limitations and so much more that I can't even expound upon in one sitting, but mostly it was the time travel. I love how it didn't matter if Teddy was careful not step on the wrong bug, just his interactions can cause drastic change. And when he does try to play with fate, it doesn't work out precisely as he had planned.

Sequel? I hate to press, but I see it mentioned in previous comments and I am quite greedy when it comes to good fic.
