| About: |  Mirror of  mengele_friends on lj.-Biography- Josef Mengele was born March 16, 1911 in Günzburg, Swabia, Bavaria. He was a member of the Stalhelm organization from March 1931 to 1933. In January 1934 the Stahlhelm was absorbed into the Sturmabteilung (SA). Mengele was a member of the SA from November 1933 until October 1934, when he left due to kidney illness. He applied to join the Nazi party in May 1937 and was accepted in May 1938, given NSDAP membership number 5574974. He applied to the SS in May 1938, at this time he worked as an assistant doctor and lived at Paul Erlicherstaße 30. in Frankfurt am Main. He served in Gebirgsjäger Regiment 137, 19 Kompanie Saalfelden i.T. from October 24, 1938 to January 21, 1939 where he was ranked Jäger (a Gebirgsjäger rank equivalent to Schutze or Private), this army posting was part of his prerequisite training to join the Waffen-SS. His SS number was 317885. He served in 5th SS Division "Wiking" in 1942, worked in KZ Auschwitz May 1943 - January 1945 and (allegedly) KZ Gross-Rosen in 1945. He lived in hiding in West Germany until 1949, when he fled to Argentina under an alias.
