fic: "Partners," Persona 3/Soul Eater crossover
Author: Laylah Fandom: Persona 3/Soul Eater Pairing: Shinjiro/Akihiko Rating: worksafe Spoilers: ...for the basic premise of Soul Eater? A/N: cadence had the fabulous idea of these two having this relationship. I just couldn't stand how cool it was. "Look, you want to team up?" he says. "We're going to need to have partners to learn how to fight, and you seem okay."
So this is Shibusen, huh? Well. Shinjiro has to admit the building's pretty impressive, if nothing else. Not much like the crappy little village where he grew up. Okay, so any old pile of rocks would probably beat that place, but still. The huge candles, and the spikes, and everything. It's pretty intense.
He slouches through the hallways, not talking to anyone, on his way to the first-year classrooms. He can find his way just fine without stopping to ask some giggly brat or some loudmouthed punk for directions. He's not nervous, and he's not intimidated, and he gets that the Reaper was doing him a big favor to give him this scholarship and everything.
Maybe he's a little nervous.
It wouldn't be so bad if he could just show up and do his own thing, right? Shinjiro knows he has skills. But no, shinigami don't work that way, and he's going to have to partner up with somebody -- some total stranger, because it's not like he's from an important family that's been masters for generations, so he'd have met weapons before -- and...let their souls touch, or something. It sounds creepy.
There are half a dozen kids already there when he gets to his classroom. That's not so bad. The room's big, like they're expecting a lot more. Shinjiro walks past the little group of girls sitting down in the front row, giggling over something one of them has on her cell phone, and climbs the stairs toward the back. There's one guy already in the back row, this silver-haired kid who's watching him come up there. He doesn't look all that fancy, dressed in the plain new-student uniform, and he has a bruise under one eye like he's been in a fight. Shinjiro doesn't look for the tag on his shirt that'll say what he is.
"Hi," he says, when Shinjiro sits down a good arm's length away. Shinjiro nods. "It's pretty crazy, right?" the guy goes on. "Like, I've lived in Death City all my life, but I never thought I'd actually get to come up here."
"Still puts you a step ahead of me," Shinjiro says. What the hell. "I'd never even been to the city until yesterday."
"Wow," the silver-haired guy says. "I've never been anywhere else. What's it like?"
Shinjiro almost wants to smile. "Boring," he says. He nods at the rest of the room, where other kids are sort of drifting in, taking their seats. "This is already more interesting than, like, everything that's ever happened in the village where I grew up."
The silver-haired guy grins. "I'm Akihiko," he says. "I'm a weapon." He turns a little in his seat, so Shinjiro can see the tag on his shirt. Like he needs to prove it, or something.
"That's kind of a mouthful, isn't it?" Shinjiro says. "I'm going to call you Aki."
Aki's brows shoot up. "Yeah?" he says. "Well, maybe I'll still listen."
That time Shinjiro can't help the smile. "I'm Shinjiro," he says. "I'm a master, I guess."
"You guess?" Aki asks. He looks like he's about to ask what that means, but Shinjiro glares, and he doesn't. "I -- okay, no, I can see how that would happen. I mean, I didn't know I was a weapon, either. Then last week Dr. Stein caught me, um," and he looks away. "Ran into me on the street and he could -- he could just tell." He shrugs. "So now I'm here."
"You talk this much to everyone?" Shinjiro asks.
Aki shakes his head. "Look, you want to team up?" he says. "We're going to need to have partners to learn how to fight, and you seem okay."
"Why would you --" Shinjiro starts, and then he gets it. Aki's as nervous as he is, maybe worse. What's it feel like to learn that you're a weapon for someone else to use? "Okay. Just don't screw up."
"I'll do fine," Aki says. "Don't you slow me down. Shinji." He holds out a hand to shake, and Shinjiro reaches out to take it.
They touch, and it's like. It's like. The rest of the room, the rest of the world, goes dark, and there's Aki, this bright blue light to match Shinjiro's red. Energy hums between them, crackles sharp. Shinjiro's hair stands on end.
He lets go, and the world snaps back into focus. Aki's eyes are huge. Shinjiro's heart is pounding.
