OTTERY ST. CATCHPOLE - Two wizards lost their lives last night in the act of averting an attempt by Death Eaters to kidnap Minister for Magic Millicent Bagnold. According to early reports, brothers Fabian Prewett, 23, and Gideon Prewett, 25, were visiting family in Ottery St. Catchpole when they left to investigate a suspicious disturbance in a nearby home. There they encountered the Minister and several of her relatives, all held hostage by several Death Eaters and at least one member of the Minister's security detail who appeared to be under the Imperius Curse.
According to witness testimonials, the Prewett brothers acted quickly to create a diversion and lead the wandless hostages into hiding. In the minutes that lapsed before the Aurors' arrival on the scene, the two wizards protected the hostages by drawing the Death Eaters away and, though significantly outnumbered, engaging them. Both were dead upon the Aurors' arrival. The Minister, her family, and members of her security detail remain in the care of Healers, but all are expected to make a full recovery.
Through a spokeswizard, Minister Bagnold issued a statement commending her rescuers for their bravery and announcing that the two will both be posthumously awarded Order of Merlin, Third Class, for services to their country. Fabian Prewett was a member of the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, and Gideon Prewett was a valued photographer on the staff of this publication. They are survived by sister Molly Weasley and parents Gareth and Elaine Prewett. The family intends to hold a private memorial service. Complete obituaries, page 14.
