Who: Karofsky and OPEN Quinn
Where: Bleachers
What: Dave wants to be alone at lunchtime...
When: November 12th; after his run in with Kurt and Blaine
Rating: SFW

Reclining back on the bench behind him, Dave sighed. Since when had his life began to spiral out of control? He was a popular guy. Mostly due to his position on the sports teams and that spark of fear he could ignite within others. He was a big believer in people knowing their places, which was why he was so aggressive. At least, that's what he'd thought. After kissing Hummel the day before, he felt more scared and alone than ever. He'd kept his shameful secret inside for so long, and then in a flash it had come out? And to Hummel of all people. He didn't want to care what the other boy thought of him, but he couldn't help but wonder. He had looked so stunned...

Dave knew that his life was balancing on a knife edge. All it took was for the wrong person to find out about what had happened, and his life would be over. He'd be seen as a hypocrite (which he already knew he was - he might have been slower than most but he wasn't completely stupid). His friends would cast him aside and he'd be the one getting shoved into lockers and thrown in dumpsters. A fair punishment, he thought bitterly, wringing his hands together almost nervously. He already knew Hummel hated him (how could he not?), but he was sure he despised him even more now. Especially after kissing him and then flipping out at his new boyfriend. That other guy. The trim, nice looking one in the posh uniform. The one who wasn't chubby. The one who didn't look like he sweat too much. The one he was sure would still have all of his hair by the age of thirty. Hummel's type.

Sitting forwards and bringing his hands up to cradle his bowed head, Dave closed his eyes. He didn't cry. Only pansies cried. There might have been something wrong with him, but he wasn't going to start blubbering about how unfair his life was. He just needed a break.

Looking up as he heard someone call out, Dave bit his lip a little at the sight of Quinn Fabray squinting up at him. A quick scan of the pitch told him that she was setting up for Cheerios practice. And here he thought that the bleachers at lunchtime would mean he'd be permitted to at least have a little alone time...

Clearing his throat a little, Dave forced a smile as he attempted to look relaxed. "What's up, Fabray?"

It was true that Karofsky had been an ass to here when he found out that she was pregnant, so she had a fair amount of dislike for the neanderthal. However, he was a jock and she was a Cheerio and they had some sort of weird co-existence. As long as he wasn't making her life a living hell she would extend the same courtesy. He hasn't started with any hostility, so she kept herself neutral as well and shrugged, putting her hands on her hips as she craned her neck to look up at him. She didn't like this -- him being above her. It gave a false sense of power, and there was no way Karofsky was ever in control of a situation involving her.

"Just doing things for Coach Sylvester. Why are you out here? Shouldn't you be stealing people's lunch money?" Oops. That had been less than nice, but it was also sort of expected given who her conversation partner was.

Dave rose an eyebrow at the head cheerleader as she looked up at him. There was no denying how great she looked, especially after what had happened last year. Playing along with the other guys as they talked about how hot the cheerleaders were had become another fragment of his act, to cover up what he really thought. Any cheerleader in a skirt wasn't worth his time and he didn't find them attractive in the slightest. He wished he did, but the time had long gone for musing about what he wanted.

"Only losers like Puckerman steal lunch money," he called back, trying his hardest to sound, well, hard. He couldn't drop the habits of a lifetime. He still needed people to know that he was large and in charge. Besides, stealing lunch money was juvenile.

Surprisingly enough, Quinn cracked a smile at that. It was true, Puck would steal lunch money. But she was supposed to be his friend now and couldn't let Karofsky smack talk Puck, even if it was true. "That's not a nice thing to say about your teammate," she replied, raising an eyebrow back at him. "Anyway, you didn't answer my question." She wasn't scared of him and his tough boy act so his harsh tone of voice didn't affect her all that much.

"It's not nice, but it's true," he replied with a shrug, not really having the heart to attempt anything more. He liked Puck, or he had liked him. Before he ditched the team to sing stupid showtunes with the stupid Glee club. He had liked Hudson, Rutherford, and Chang at one point too, but there was no point dwelling on what had happened. It was the basic, unwritten rules that any member of the Glee club were now uncool, no matter what other team they belonged to.

Rubbing the back of his neck, he regarded Quinn with a straight face before answering her question. "I wasn't feeling well, I needed air." It was sort of true. After seeing Hummel with that other guy? He felt sick. Plus, saying that he wanted to be alone sounded so dramatic and this was the best secondary option.

Something was wrong. Karofsky wasn't saying his usual rude things and giving her that lecherous look that made her skin crawl and... something was just wrong. Maybe he really was sick. This new niceness (it was a skill she was still refining) in her was oddly prevalent at the moment and she tilted her head slightly in concern. "Why didn't you go to the nurse? I hear she just lets you sleep there for as long as you want."

Dave's eyebrows rose slightly. Was that concern in Quinn's voice? It couldn't be. She hated him. A lot of people hated him, and for good reason. He'd been horrible to her once her Cheerios uniform wasn't there t protect her anymore, joining in with the crowds of other jocks in the teasing. So why was she being, dare he say it, nice?

"I'll be fine," he replied monotonously, not wanting her to demand he go to the nurse or anything. He was sure that he would be fine, eventually. "Thanks though."

Had Karofsky just said 'thanks'? That was a first. They both seemed awkwardly cordial in this interaction and it was kind of freaking Quinn out. Karofsky seemed pretty surprised by this too. Were they in an alternate dimension where the world was backwards?

"Um, are you sure?" She asked after a moment. She felt a little weird about him hanging out on the bleachers as she set up for Cheerios if he was sick.

"Yeah, I'm sure."

There was still hardly any emotion in his voice. He couldn't bring himself to fake it any more. Besides, it was already clear that both of them were acting out of sorts, what with all of this politeness. Usually they would have ignored each other or not even had the chance to talk at all. It was almost better that way, it saved on the awkwardness. But there wasn't any escaping it now, especially since Dave didn't really want to head back inside. What if Kurt and his new boy toy were still in there? What if both of them tried to talk to him about what had happened? Dave definitely didn't want that.

"You don't mind, do you?" he asked, quite surprising to even himself. It was almost as though he were rediscovering that he'd been brought up with manners. Usually he wouldn't have cared, but he was rattled and he really didn't want Quinn to insist that he go inside.

Quinn was already weirded out but now she was starting to get really weirded out. The social norm in a situation like this would be to ask what was wrong. Well, press further since she had asked and he gave her a bogus answer of not feeling well. New and improved concerned!Quinn couldn't let that slide though.

As much of a shock Karofsky's odd behavior was to her, she was even more shocked with herself when she turned away then walked over to the staircase and began climbing them, her footsteps making soft clacks on the metal, until she was next to him. She hesitated a moment before sitting down, not too close but definitely close enough for it to be clear to anyone who may come by that they were sitting together.

"Uh, so... What's up?"

Dave groaned a little to himself as he saw Quinn begin to approach him. So much for being alone...

When she sat next to him, he shuffled away slightly. He didn't want to be too close to anybody right now. He might have been a jerk, but he wasn't completely rude. So he turned his head to face her, his expression still unreadable. "Nothing really," he replied, as calmly as he could manage. The events that had just happened were still fresh in his mind, but he'd rather kill himself than tell Quinn about it.

"You guys think you're gonna get to Nationals this year?" he asked, trying as hard as he could to move the subject of conversation away from himself.

Quinn began rolling her eyes when Karofsky moved away from her before grinding her teeth slightly and reminding herself to be nice. It was really difficult though when he was acting so weird. Because, seriously? He was asking about Glee? And he was totally still evading her questions, but whatever. "Um, I don't know," she finally responded slowly. "We have some new members so, um, that's good." This was so weird. "So... how is Coach Beiste? Better than Coach Tanaka?"

Dave nodded as Quinn spoke, not really taking in what she was saying. He was to preoccupied to be making small talk. It wasn't though he didn't care, per say. He just wasn't in the right frame of mind to retain any information right then.

"That's cool," he replied half-heartedly, looking out over the pitch in favour of keeping eye contact with Quinn. "Yeah, Beiste is tons better. We're actually winning games now, which is always good."

"Yeah, well good luck with the rest of the season and stuff," Quinn said, fidgeting slightly. "I better go finish setting up for practice otherwise Coach will put me at the bottom of the pyramid. So. Uh, see ya," she said then stood quickly, gave a hasty wave, and returned back to the field to continue with her assigned task.
