Who: Burt, Carole, boys?
What: conversation after the news
Where: Hudmels living room
When: after Sue's diatribe on the news tonight
Rating: no promises if Burt gets riled

"... How Sue--". The tv went abruptly silent as Burt clicked it off and dropped the remote back onto the table with a growl. He stood up, stretching. " That woman," he said with a shake of his head, "gets me so aggravated sometimes."

"Oh, I know," Carole sighed. "I was looking forward to it, even with Finn opting out to focus on football -- they've got Kurt and Rachel and Blaine, and I may not know the source material very well, but it should be a good show." She sighed, and rested her head on her hand as she looked up at him. "I hope that woman doesn't actually have the pull to ruin this for them."

"Yeah, I am, too. And Genny is playing in the orchestra. Plus, it's just no good to let her get away with this stuff, and she does it all the time. If it isn't one thing, it's another with her, and now she's taking it beyond McKinley. Beyond Lima,." he agreed. "It worries me that she's getting as much support as she does."

"It's crazy," Carole sighed. "She's even a bully on her news segment, I don't understand how people don't see that." She reached up and laced her fingers with Burt's. "I mean, I know we can't all be fine upstanding Burt Hummels, but Sue Sylvester's about as far from it as they come," she told him lightly.

Burt nodded agreement to her first statement, feeling a little bit of a blush heat his neck and face at her second. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze, tugging a little to get her to her feet so he could kiss her properly.

But the tv spot was still nagging at him. "It just kills me that no one is even standing up to her. It's like everyone's afraid to go against her, at the school, or anywhere else, you know?" It was so frustrating, watching her these last couple of years, trying to undermine everyone else.

Carole smiled and wrapped her arms around Burt's neck. "She's used to getting her way, and pushing people around to get it," she mused with a shrug. "Not to mention she fights dirty, from what I've heard -- anyone who challenges her wound have to have really thick skin, and be pretty stubborn to boot." She huffed lightly. "That pretty much sounds like a job description for politics, now that you mention it," she added dryly.

He nodded, slipping his arms around her waist and resting his cheek against her soft hair. "Yeah. She's a tough old biddy, anyone willing to take her on would have to be even tougher. And almost as stubborn as a Hummel." He chuckled. With Kurt running for class president, he'd been seeing whole new levels of Hummel determination in his son...

Leaning back, he looked down at her thoughtfully. "I wonder what it takes to do something like that, though. Get into the race. You know, if there was someone willing to take her on, so she can't take this all away from our kids. I mean, she'll do it statewide, if she can."

"Forget statewide -- if she ends up in Congress, she'll be making national policy," Carole groaned. "I don't even want to think about it, it would be a disaster. God, if someone could take her on, and actually win -- I'd look into the registration requirements myself." She pulled back slightly, lifting an eyebrow at him. "What are you thinking, Burt Hummel?"

He shook his head, laughing a little at the image half-forming in his head. Burt Hummel for Congress What was he even thinking? He was a mechanic, with two teenage sons and a new wife (who he kiseed again, just because she was so pretty, looking at him like that, and he just couldn't help it.... ) Adding this to his plate would just be silly.

But still... he found himself musing aloud. "I don't know about winning. But giving her a run for her money, giving a voice to the other side of things, to our kids? Making people see just how ridiculous and over the top her arguments are? Someone could do that. Someone... kinda normal. Real. Someone with kids like the ones this will hurt, you know?" He shook his head again. "Just to call her on her bullshit, make people think."

Carole slid her hands down to rest on his chest, her eyebrows lifting in surprise. "Vote Hummel?" she said, as if trying it out. She tilted her head, a smile tugging at her lips as she straightened his collar absently. "I'd vote for you," she added, affectionate. "No one pushes the Hummels around, isn't that how it goes?"

"Well, that's one," he said with a warm grin. "Do you think anyone else would?" He caught her hands where they fussed with his collar, to kiss each palm before releasing them. "And you're right. No one pushes the Hummels around. Not even Sue Sylvester."

He looked down into her eyes. "I don't know. I mean, what if I did go for it? Do you think there'd be a chance? And.. it would be an awful lot of work. And what would it even mean for the boys?"

"Hey," Carole said, and reached up to cup his face in her hands. "The important question here is what do you want? I mean, I know it's a long shot, and it might be too late entirely to throw your name in the ring, but -- on the off-chance that you actually win, is this something you would really want to do?" She smiled at him encouragingly. "The boys will be graduating next spring, and I'm a big girl, but you -- don't do this just to stick it to Sue Sylvester, Burt, think about what it means for you."

He looked down at her thoughtfully for a few long moments. Was this something he really wanted to try?

Since the heart attack... No, even before that. Since he'd met her. Since he'd started coming out of the quiet, familiar routine that took him from home to work and back again, with the occasional break for a night out with the guys or football game, he had started to feel, well, restless. Like the world was so much bigger than the little circle he'd drawn in it and made his.

He'd worn a groove in his life. A rut. Kurt, finally coming out, and bringing Carole and Finn into their lives, had started to change his patterns. The heart attack had jolted something in him awake, too. Maybe this was how Kurt felt when he talked about how much he needed to get out of Lima...

And he could do some real good with this. He was pretty thick-skinned, as Carole had said. (Well, it hurt when people said things about his kid, just pitched so he could hear them, in the grocery store or whatever. But he let it roll off him. Because he got to go home to that kid and know how awesome his kids really were. If he did this, he knew there'd be a whole new stage for narrow-minded people to poke at Kurt, and it wasn't as if Finn wouldn't be affected, either.

And yet, this idea was really starting to sound kinda exciting, too. A chance to DO good, instead of talking about it.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "I kinda think I do."

"Then I think the boys will understand," Carole assured him with a smile. "And if you decide to go for it, we'll back you 100 percent. If anyone can take down Sue Sylvester, it's Burt Hummel -- and Ohio would be lucky to have you."
