Coffee at The Lima Bean
Who: Blaine, Mercedes
Where: The Lima Bean
What: Blaine and Mercedes bond over coffee.
When: Sunday afternoon?
Rating: probably pretty PG, :)

Blaine flashed a smile at the barista behind the counter as he accepted his coffee, his mind only partially on what he was doing. The whole issue with Kurt and the Warblers performance for their sister school had gotten away from him somehow, and he was at a loss for what to do about it, now. He'd spoken to Mr. Hummel, at least, but Kurt didn't want to talk about it, and Blaine wasn't foolish enough to push the issue.

Most of the time he ended up here he was with Kurt, but it hadn't much sounded like Kurt wanted company at the moment -- so Blaine had come alone, for a change, his European History book tucked into his satchel just in case he decided to be productive. He threaded through the tables to an empty two-top over by the window, and slung his satchel down underneath the table before turning his attention to doctoring his coffee.

Mercedes needed to relax, and she needed to relax now. The last week or so had been so full of crunch study time and regionals worries that she had no time to herself. Now she found herself with a free Sunday and she was going to enjoy it.

She entered the coffee shop, ordered her drink, and scanned the room to see if there was anyone she knew. It was just her luck that she saw Blaine, Kurt's new friend, sitting at a table. She had never spoken to him without Kurt nearby, so she figured now was the perfect time.

"Hey Blaine! Whatcha doin' here?"

Blaine looked up, surprised. "Hey, Mercedes," he greeted her with a smile. "I'm avoiding my European History paper, at the moment -- it's not due until Thursday, anyway," he added as he waved one hand dismissively. "What about you? Anything exciting on tap for the day?"

"Ugh homework, I don't even want to think about that." Mercedes said rolling her eyes. She was so over work right now. "And nah, just gonna relax, chill out a bit. How've you been?"

"Not bad -- hard at work for Regionals," Blaine answered. He gestured toward the empty seat across from him with his coffee cup. "You're welcome to join me, as long as you're not going to pump me for information on our set list," he grinned.

Mercedes pulled out the seat opposite of Blaine and plopped herself down, throwing her bag to the side. "You gotta promise the same." She winked.

Despite the competition, Mercedes really had no problem what so ever with the Warblers. VA were jerks, but when it came to Dalton, it was more like friendly competition. Plus it's not like any one of them would turn on Kurt.

"Deal," Blaine laughed. "I'm pretty sure Rachel would find a way to come after me if I tried, anyway." He nudged the plate of biscotti he'd appropriated toward Mercedes and leaned back in his chair, lifting an eyebrow at her over his coffee. "How are things faring over at McKinley, then?"

Mercedes grinned, "Oh Rachel, she's crazy but I love her anyway." Mercedes picked a tiny piece of the biscotti, not wanting to be selfish, and popped it in her mouth. "Thanks" she said, offering her own scone to him.

"McKinley's fine." She shrugged, "You know, could be better, but it's calmed down a bit since the big game." The bullies seemed to have laid off of the glee kids for now, not that Mercedes got a lot of trouble from that anymore. "Hella boring without Kurt though. I miss my boy. Hope you're takin' care of him."

"We're certainly doing our best," Blaine assured her, demurring on the scone. He wasn't sure how much Kurt had told Mercedes about the 'Animal' fiasco, especially since it involved a potential Regionals number, but he'd promised Kurt he wouldn't push the issue, and he'd already overstepped by going to Kurt's dad. "I'll let him know you were asking about him, though," Blaine added with a smile.

He furrowed his brow slightly, tilting his head at Mercedes as something else occurred to him. "Come to think of it, we ran into someone else from McKinley in here last week -- a Coach Sylvester? She seemed to know Kurt pretty well."

"You better, or all you pretty boys are gonna have to deal with me." Mercedes said with a mock glare. She knew Kurt was fairing a lot better at Dalton than he was at Mckinley though, and as much as she missed him she would rather he be safe. "He seems a lot happier." And a hell of a lot safer.

Mercedes had the unfortunate timing of drinking her coffee right as Blaine mentioned Sylvester. She choked on her drink and took a moment to collect herself before continuing. "You-" she coughed, "You ran into Coach Sylvester? Oooooh, Kurt can handle her but I'm surprised your pretty little face got through it unscathed."

Blaine gave her a wounded look. "I'm not that sheltered," he scoffed. "Although the things she was doing to a perfectly good cup of coffee should be outlawed," he added with a shake of his head. "I think she was trying to run some kind of covert joint glee club spy mission, though, so you might want to keep an eye on your plans for Regionals when she's around."

"You don't know Coach." Mercedes said dropping her arms on the table, remembering what it was like in her brief stint as a Cheerio. "She's freaking insane." Mercedes wondered why she thought joining the Cheerios was a good idea. "She's had it out for us since the beginnin', she leaked our set list last year for sectionals and we had to come up with a number like thirty minutes before we were on."

"Seriously?" Blaine asked, amused. He lifted an eyebrow at her, his amusement fading a bit as he realized she wasn't kidding. "No, wait -- seriously? You guys won your sectionals last year, didn't you?"

"Yeah" Mercedes said shrugging, "We were really lucky, and we have a great team." She was still upset over the solo though, and she would never forget it. It was one of her best songs, although she did appreciate the birth of her friendship with Rachel. "She's evil. You prep school boys should watch out for her if she comes snooping around."

Blaine just hummed thoughtfully as he sipped at his coffee. Pulling out an emergency set list at the last minute like that would've been flat out impossible for the Warblers to pull off; even if they fell back on one of the songs they already knew, perfecting eight-part harmony didn't happen in half an hour. The idea that New Directions had apparently done just that was... kind of frightening.

"I'll keep that in mind," Blaine mused. "She did seem kind of put out when Kurt refused to feed her inside information, and I distinctly remember something about her pushing the old Aural Intensity coach down the stairs. And if she's that evil, I'm assuming we should take everything she says with a grain of salt," he added dryly.

"She's done worse than that." Mercedes said with a snort, "She's a little weird though, she has her nice moments but you definitely shouldn't trust her." Mercedes had learned a thing or two about Sylvester. Stay the hell away from the lady.

"Anyway, what the hell kind of name is Aural Intensity?"

Blaine grinned slightly at that, but he refrained from saying anything about 'New Directions'. If that one hadn't occurred to her, he wasn't going to be the one to burst her bubble. "There does seem to be a run on overly dramatic glee club names in Ohio," he said instead, his voice light. "I mean, the club that went to Nationals last year was called 'Vocal Adrenaline', wasn't it? So I guess it's par for the course."

Mercedes scowled at the name drop. She still couldn't stand Vocal Adrenaline. "If you think Sylvesters bad, just make sure those VA assholes don't get near you."

Fuck with the club, that's one thing, egg Rachel, well that was another.

"I've heard rumors, but we didn't get past Regionals last year, so we never faced them," Blaine admitted. He leaned forward on his elbows and broke a piece of biscotti in half idly. "They're really that bad, then?"

"You didn't?" Mercedes said a little surprised. "You guys are good, not gonna lie." They weren't VA but they were pretty tough competitors. Nothing really says you can sing like an a capella group. "And yeah, they're also a bunch of bitches. Not only are they like crazy good, but they play dirty. Hell the fucking egged Rachel. That's just fucked up."

Blaine blinked at that. "They -- egged her? Like, with actual eggs?" He frowned for a moment. "I kind of get the impression from Kurt that you guys generally want to throw things at Rachel most the time, but that does seem particularly harsh."

"Rachel's a pain in the ass but she's our pain in the ass." Mercedes said with a fond grin, "It's just that, they fucking egged her. I will never get over that." Seriously, a year later and she was still pissed. "And the worst part? Rachel's super vegan so it wasn't just embarrassing to her, it was wrong."

"They egged her and she's vegan?" Blaine echoed, aghast. "That's not harsh, that just cruel. Wait, but did they know she's vegan? I mean, I didn't know that, and I've met Rachel."

"I'm pretty sure they did, she did date St. James for a while." Toyed with her heart then broke it right before Regionals, those dirty snakes. "St. James was their lead," She clarified, after realizing that Blaine may not know who he was. "He transfered into Mckinley, joined our club, dated Rachel, and then ditched her right before the comp."

Blaine frowned slightly. "They sabotaged you guys," he said, shaking his head incredulously. "That's -- wow." He was silent for a moment, before quirking one eyebrow at her over the lid of his cup. "Is it wrong that I kind of want to go back and hear the whole story after Regionals, when we aren't competing against each other anymore? Because McKinley sounds vastly more interesting than Dalton, at least in terms of dramatic stories," he added dryly.

"I know, they must've felt threatened." Mercedes said, leaning back into her chair, "And hell no, it ain't wrong, I'll tell you all about it afterwards, we can even bring Kurt and Rachel, the three of us could tell one helluva story." Mercedes chuckled, three divas, one story, that'll be an award winning tale for sure, "I'm just glad we're competin' against you guys this year, friendly competition, no sabotage, just music, that's what this should all be about anyway."

"Right here, after Regionals, all four of us. Losing team buys the others lattes, and I'll listen to every story you've got," Blaine countered. He picked up another piece of biscotti and dunked it idly in his coffee. "And I can promise you won't find any Warblers trying to infiltrate your ranks for nefarious purposes, at least," he assured her. "We should probably apologize for stealing Kurt from you guys, even if it wasn't intentional -- but we got a ridiculously good countertenor out of it, so I'm not really sorry," he added with a grin.

"You are so on" Mercedes beamed. A trophy was nice, but coffee was better...alright maybe she was exaggerating a little. "Psh, we'd probably all just end up partying and not getting anywhere glee club wise. I know the girls would go all crazy for some new eye candy."

And then an idea occurred to her...

"You ever wondered what it'd be if we got our clubs together and sang something?"

That startled a laugh out of Blaine. "Organized chaos?" he suggested, smiling. "Everybody seemed to get along fairly well at the Valentine's Day thing, at least -- even if that was mostly us singing for you guys and a bunch of Breadstix patrons," he chuckled. "You have something in mind, or just trying to imagine the craziness that might ensue?"

"Organized awesome!" Mercedes said with a cackling laugh, "Man, if we combined our clubs we'd be able to beat the shit outta VA." And that would be so satisfying. "I think we should totally do it, after Regionals to show that we're good sports no matter what the outcome, plus I miss singin' with Kurt."

Blaine's expression softened a little at that. "I never got a chance to hear him sing with you guys," he admitted. "He's told me a little, but we've tried not to ask him anything that might be construed as inside information, just so he's not put on the spot. Still, I can tell he misses all of you," he added with a smile. "I bet he'd enjoy that."
