When the Bond Breaks
TITLE: When the Bonds Break
RATING: PG-13 (language, descriptions of violence)
SUMMARY: AU inspired by a K-Pop video on YouTube
WORD COUNT: 632
Tifa hadn’t wanted to kill the intruder, despite the fact that he reminded her too much of Sephiroth. She had just wanted to incapacitate him long enough to grab Marlene and get the hell away from the church, and nothing more. But the strange man took the punishment she dished out and returned it in equal measure. Then he tipped the odds in his favor with his ghost-like teleportation, and the next thing she knew was that her chest hurt and she couldn’t breathe and the flowers were rapidly becoming mere blobs of color.
The solid “THOK” of something bouncing off of her attacker’s head scared her to death. Marlene. Ever her father’s daughter. She hadn’t run? Tifa struggled to pull herself up, still barely able to breathe or focus. The stranger stalked the little girl with an evil sneer, stretching out the moment that he would be in arm’s length of her. Marlene twisted the dirty bandage in her hand, almost hypnotized by the man’s eyes. “CLOUD!” the little girl begged.
“Just run!” Tifa screamed, but Marlene was rooted to the spot. The stranger snickered, and reached out his hands.
She didn’t remember getting on her feet. She didn’t remember leaping to the stranger’s shoulders, wrapping her thighs around his neck. She didn’t remember the moment of vertigo as she wrenched herself backwards, bringing the two of them back to the ground. The only thing she remembered later was the deep wet crunch as she broke his neck.

Yazoo swayed and fell to his knees, clutching his head. He could hear running footsteps as the children he had so patiently gathered scattered. He wanted to call them back, quietly reassure them again, but all he could do was gasp raggedly and try to choke down mewling sobs. The pain, he felt Loz’s pain, he felt Mother’s rage, he felt Sephiroth’s fear, but mostly he felt the pain of losing Loz.
“Hey, mister, you OK?”
Yazoo looked up through the silvery strands covering most of his face. All he could see was a doll. One of the children had carried a doll, a silly, battered, useless thing… He found himself wanting to touch the doll, to feel its softness and somehow be comforted by it. “My brother… he’s dead,” he whispered.
He was surprised to feel to thin arms wrap around his shoulders. The doll was now banging against his back, and a warm body was pressing against his chest. “My brother’s dead, too,” the little girl whispered. His arms moved of their own accord, and the girl’s whispered humming comfort drowned out the rage and fear that didn’t belong to him, and he cried for the pain that did.

Vincent had not expected to be able to find their hide-out by following an incoherently screaming voice. He didn’t know what had happened, only that someone was screaming about a brother and revenge and other things he couldn’t quite make out, even with his abilities. He hurried, knowing that the captives were now in greater danger than before of being killed.
He paused at the entrance to a cave, silently loading his weapon as he peered in. There was Elena, tossed aside like a doll, bleeding in a dozen places but still breathing, if a bit shallowly. There was Tseng, hands tied behind his back, kneeling, reeling, but his chin still lifted proudly despite the mess his face had become. There was the one Vincent had heard called Kadaj, spittle flying from his mouth as he paced and screamed, his sword cutting the air. He was working himself into an insane rage, and Vincent knew he had little time to decide what to do.
Kadaj slashed at Tseng’s throat. Vincent’s decision was made, and the gun roared in his hand.
